Putting a sales tax on gasoline will be a nightmare for station operators and a "shot to the gut" for consumers, state Comptroller Peter Franchot and tax analysts and petroleum industry representatives said yesterday.
Franchot and the panel blasted the proposal by Gov. Martin O'Malley and lamented the governor's failure to draft a bill for them to examine.
A spokeswoman for the governor said the bill likely will be presented to the General Assembly this week.
Franchot said O'Malley should abandon the idea of a sales tax on gasoline and find another way to balance the budget.
