Proposed Sales Tax Hike Caught Md. Lawmakers By Surprise

ANNAPOLIS State lawmakers from Maryland's Eastern Shore are concerned about Gov. Martin O'Malley's habit over the last two years of announcing new initiatives without any notice. The latest instance involves a proposed 1-cent increase to the sales tax.
According to Associated Press reports, O'Malley mentioned last Wednesday the idea of raising the sales tax from 6 cents to 7 cents during the opening of this year's 90-day General Assembly session. O'Malley had previously spoken about the possibility for various tax increases, including the gas tax and the flush tax.

  1. instead of presenting it as a 1% tax increase...he is saying its a $0.01 increase (1 cent). whens the last time you were able to get something for a dollar?

  2. It is not a 1% tax increase, going from 6 to 7 cents is a 16.6% tax increase.
I wish people could get this through their heads, a 1 cent increase does not = a 1% increase.

  3. Instead of a hike in the sales tax, why not create a stupidity tax. Every time O'Mally come up with another idea, the state of Maryland will be able to collect tax revenues from him.

  4. i am a Md. resident that buys my large ticket items as well as liquor and smokes in Delaware. If they pass this I won't buy as much as a roll of paper towels in Md. any longer.

  5. Notice that Richard Colburn says he is favor of passing it -(.01)- increase onto central Maryland residents - (areas with the most bridges) - but not to the eastern shore.

In my analysis - it would be much more effective to just declare our independence from the western shore and form our own separate State.

  6. Strap yourselves in...EVERYTHING is under consideration for tax increases and higher fees and further surcharges. These theiving snakes have spent us into the poorhouse, while showering themselves with raises, trips to foreign vacation spots (with their satff and families), and luxurious benefits. And, at the same time, taking untraceable kickbacks, bribes and "favors". Now they want to wring the last dollars available to us to try to fix things, but STILL not willing to cut spending, just take MORE of our money. Maybe voting will help....
