Gotta Love The Wicomico County Board Of Education

100 DAY CELEBRATION!!!!!

It doesn't get any better than this Ladies & Gentlemen. Do you know what the 100 day celebration is? Well, it's a brand new program YOUR BOE has recommended and is getting ready to implement.

It means, GET THIS, they have reached the 100th day of school and it's time to celebrate! It's been reported that each class in the title one system will be required to spend $500.00 to celebrate the 100th day. Oh, it gets better.

So where do you think the money is coming from? Well, it's again been reported its coming from the FEDS. Now, the BOE is requiring the Parents be involved in this celebration. The kids are being required to bring home a permission slip. However, this time it's for the Parents to sign to let the BOE know just how many Parents will be coming.

Oh, it gets even better. Because of the circumstances these Parents and children are in it was suggested in order to get the parents transportation to the schools that they ride the bus into school with the children. Nah, that won't work. Why, because the BOE feels it might embarrass the Parents too much so they scrapped that idea.

However, it gets even better. The BOE has allegedly informed the Parents that if they cannot get a ride to the school, the BOE will provide transportation.

Look, no matter what, these liberals are going too far. Oh, I'm sure you'll hear, it's not costing the taxpayers because the feds are paying for it. PLEASE! I have never in my life seen a bigger boat load of crap. I'm just going to stop here because quite frankly I'm getting too ticked off. I'll just let the comments fly in instead.

New Posts to fall below.

  1. We go back to school in August to provide more days of prep time before MSA testing begins. How much learning do you think will get done on this Carnival Day? If you want to celebrate education, do some school work.

  2. "So where do you think the money is coming from? Well, it's again been reported its coming from the FEDS."

And any money from the Feds comes from taxpayers, too.

This "100 day celebration" is one of the craziest things I've heard of among all the other crazy things from the BOE. I'm a retired teacher, and in all my 30+ years of teaching, we never had a 100-day celebration.

  3. Title 1 funds were taken away from Pinehurst, Pemberton, Northwestern and Willards to spend on Prince Street. Someone should ask how much is being spent on PS and how much that is in excess of what federal regulations require for school choice. Adding $500 per Title 1 classroom is laughable. Learning will improve when kids work more and get far fewer rewards for doing almost nothing.

  4. This is part of the work should be fun philosophy. Maybe work should be work since it's obvious many kids are unfamiliar with the word and the schools try hard to keep it that way. Even high school students get lots of rewards for doing almost nothing. Great preparation for the world of work.

So how much exactly is this going to cost? "Each class in the title one system will be required to spend $500.00?" WTF? God I'm so sick of our BOE. This county has gone to hell...new school we can't afford, new school in a flood zone, $500 per class for reaching the 100th day in school, drugs and violence everywhere, not enough police officers, etc. I could go on and on but I think I better stop. Quite frankly the more I read the madder I get. I'm truly fed up!! Beth

  6. They always have made a deal out of the 100 day celebration in Wicomico schools. They have never involved the parents. What's up with that? As far as the buses go the county dropped the liability insurance on the school buses from 3 million to 1 million. Maybe that's why they say they can't transport the parents.

  7. I'm not getting what's so special about the 100th day. Are the people who concoct this stuff paid as educators or party planners?

  8. I think it is a great idea. One of the biggest issues in Title I schools is getting parents involved in the students education. So be it if they provide transportation. If they can get the parents involved in learning maybe the parents will start taking more responsibility instead of blaming everyone else. Yes, it is a hand out by the government, but I think it is well spent money!

  9. I went to school in Wicomico county for twelve years not once did we have a 100 day celebration. We also never had air conditioned schools. We still learned reading ,writing and arithmetic and graduated with honors. We still produced Doctors and Lawyers and such. So 100 day what? New schools because they aren't air conditioned what?

  10. Wow they have planned a day that is educational and enjoyable for the kids at the same time? AND they want to involve parents in their child's education in the process? The audacity! They should be ashamed of themselves! Do you have any idea how much can be taught surrounding the 100th day theme? The quality children's books written about the subject that can be used to study main idea, character traits, and countless other reading skills? The abundance of math activities that can be used? Of course you don't because you are not a teacher. You are just one more person who wants to tell teachers how to do their jobs.

  11. This has nothing to do with education. It's a celebration of the 100 days of paid time off that teachers get.

  12. Just another way for the BOE to piss away some more tax payers money.
There goes more of our law enforcement dollars.
Did you see that one coming Stevie?

  13. I could care less about what students/parents/teachers get out of this. As a tax payer with no kids, I am quite frankly disgusted with the way this county handles things. All these parents you want to get "involved" don't pay taxes and don't care. You should all be ashamed!!!!!

  14. Google,"100 DAY CELEBRATION for Title 1 school students", and you will find this is nation wide - not just Wicomico County. There are all kinds of freebies and celebration ideas on the internet. It is probably just another mandate, required by "no child left behind." to help students pass their AYP. You all are too quick to blame the teachers and BOE.

  15. Look at what's being spent at Prince Street now and add $500 per classroom. If their scores go up, does that mean every school needs tens of millions spent on a small number of children? Maybe Willards, Northwestern, Pinehurst and Pemberton would have liked their fair share of Title 1 funds since they qualify, too. School choice requirements could have been met with far less being spent on one school.

  16. What does it mean when it says each class in the title one system? I don't have any children in the school system so I have no clue what that means.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Why should the Government have to bribe me or any other parent to "get involved" with the education of our kids.As a parent, that is our job!

  18. Let's see...BMS project bitch and moan session is over so now you are the attack again. You all need to get a life. The 100th day celebration and projects are exciting for the kids. For once, this is a way to engage them.

Get over it! Instruction is different than 20 years ago and this type of activity is the norm. Visit a school on this date and you will see. If you don't have any kids in the system, you are welcome to come to my school.

  19. Each Title I school has two or more "family fun" nights per year. These nights show parents how they can help their child, in a fun way. The families play educational games, utilize technology, and have fun together while doing it. Our school is not calling it a "Hundred Day" celebration. It's just one of our normal family nights. It's an outreach. The children leave with books and/or games, and the parents take away ideas. In today's world we have to reach out to parents, share the responsibility of the students' learning with them. Sometimes making them know that we care enough to pick them up if they have no transportation.

  20. Get a life? I have a life. It involves working and paying taxes. Since my tax dollars are used to fund this non-sense I have a right to speak about it! This is all ridiculous. Going and picking up parents who wont get off their lazy asses long enough to find a ride to their childs school? The entire system needs revamping. From the president who would fund this shit on down to the teacher who pushes for it. You are wasting taxpayers dollars on things that are kuxuries at a time when we are trillions in debt. What in the hell is so hard to understand about that!?!?!

  21. Need to find out and put out the truth about Moses and Stacy when you get a chance. Taxpayers were ripped off.

  22. 10:12 I went to school in this county. There was never a 100 Day anything. Try harder!

  23. 3:26 - One would think that it is a parent's job to get involved in their child's eduaction but sadly, many don't. And thanks to goverment mandates, schools have to read every child - even the ones whose parents could care less.

The purpose of celebrating the 100the day is go give kids who ordinarily don't care about their own education a chance to look at how much they have accomplished and how important what they learn is to their future. The day is filled with activities surrounding the number 100 - math, reading, science, etc. It is not a free day to play.

But please, go on with your teacher bashing!

  25. you think the feds are paying for it!!!!!!thats still our tax money, where you think it comes from, trees????i cant afford it anymore, can you?

  26. For those of you who "don't have kids" in public schools, I'm sorry for you, but when you buy a house anywhere you must pay taxes that include monies for education. If you don't want to pay, go rent somewhere. As for you jerks who want to complain about a fun activity in school that engages children in the learning process in a fun way occasionally, you need to get a life. There are federal laws that require schools to do certain things in Title I schools. Educate yourselves before you run your mouths inappropriately.

    Holding teachers accountable is bashing?

IF they were doing THEIR JOB, there would be no need to tell them how to do their job would there?

Some of these teachers remind me of firefighters and cops. They don't want to do their job but they want to be treated as if they are omnipotent.

And if anyone dares to question or criticize them, they threaten to withhold their services. Yeah, real mature professionals we are dealing with huh?

I've had enough whining for one night. Goodnight.

  28. I just heard a comedian on the television and he had some things to say which seem appropriate for the last few days...no matter how much time and money you spend, you can't fix stupid...seems quite a fit for 4 county council members and a county executive who have no clue how difficult these economic times are on us peons

    ReplyDelete
  29. Speaking of teacher basing and failing students. The percent passing and failing is based on test scores that says by the year 2014 100% of students must pass ALL standards.
    This is impossible.
Lets see firefighters prevent 100% of fires or police stop 100% of crimes. Politician make good on 100% of thier promises. Doctors save 100% of their patients. It is impossible

  30. Joe. This is one of the most biases post i have seen from you. Do a little research and see the importance of having the parents come in. The money is TITLE 1 funds.
I wish you would donate some of your hard working time and volunteer 1 week in the classroom!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think Joe did the community right by sharing this information. We have a right to know. There are a LOT of great teachers in WCBOE, and of course there are a few slackers. There would be far more better teachers if central office would back off and let them teach! They waste so much time and resources micromanaging.
Anyway, the 100th day celebration has been happening for year and it is a fun activity filled day. However, that amount of money to spend on one day is just ridiculous. The school are going to be held accountable for grades, not the parents. It is time to accept that the parents that want to be involved will, and those that don't will not no matter how much money is spent on them. With the budget the way it is, back off catering to all the lazy parents who continue to have kids because the "system" will take care of them.
If it is a mandate, I am sure the mandate does not require $500 a class...how about something more reasonable line $50...spend responsibly WCBOE and stop wasting the money!

  32. can anybody explain the bridge program in high schools.

    ReplyDelete
  33. You could ask someone at Central Office, but they probably wouldn't know either. They just make up whatever BS will get them by at the time.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The money is excessive but it pays for the books and games. Also to get parents you have to feed them. Some do come for that reason. And if you want them to come pay the cab charge. Its the kind of parents we have now. You must bribe them to spend time with their kids.cookies and punch no longer is accepted. I've been to these and some people that come are not happy with what is served, how much is served and where it is bought. But that goes along with entitlement. We have let this happen. And it now cost $500.00.
