GOVERNOR MARTIN O’MALLEY TO JOIN LOCAL STEELWORKERS, ADVOCATES IN FINAL PUSH FOR OFFSHORE WIND

ANNAPOLIS, MD (March 22, 2011) – Governor Martin O’Malley will join local steelworkers, environmental advocates, and legislative leaders tomorrow at Annapolis’ City Dock to promote the Administration’s offshore wind initiative during the final weeks of the 2011 legislative session.

The Maryland Offshore Wind Energy Act of 2011 will require that public utilities leverage Maryland's outstanding offshore wind resources by entering into long-term purchase agreements with wind power generation facilities off of the Mid-Atlantic coast.  Projects off Maryland’s coast could generate as many as 2,000 manufacturing and construction jobs during the five-year development period, with an additional 400 permanent jobs once the turbines are spinning.

In addition to creating new ‘green’ jobs, harnessing the potential of offshore wind power will generate much needed clean, renewable energy, and promote long-term price stability while helping to ensure that Maryland meets its Renewable Portfolio Standard goal of generating 20% of its energy from renewable resources by 2022.

WHAT:           Governor O’Malley to join local steelworkers, advocates to promote offshore wind development

WHEN:           TOMORROW, Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 2:30 p.m.

FIRST LADY JUDGE KATIE O’MALLEY TO VISIT AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS AT HOLABIRD ACADEMY AS PART OF READ ACROSS MARYLAND MONTH

ANNAPOLIS, MD (March 22, 2011) – TOMORROW, First Lady Judge Katie O’Malley will join Maryland State Educators Association (MSEA) President Clara Floyd to celebrate “Read Across Maryland” month by visiting after school programs at Holabird Academy in Baltimore.

This year marks the third “Read Across Maryland” month. For the second year in a row, the O’Malley-Brown Administration is partnering with MSEA, the Maryland Library Association and the Maryland Association of School Librarians to encourage educators, parents and children to read 30 minutes for 30 days as part of a “30 for 30” theme.

Maryland’s public schools serve as a national model for quality public education. For the third year in a row, the state’s public schools were ranked number one in the nation by Education Week Magazine. And according to the College Board, Maryland high school students rank number one in AP success for the third consecutive year. Throughout the month of March, Governor O’Malley, Lt. Governor Brown, First Lady Katie O’Malley and members of the Executive Cabinet are joining community leaders, elected officials and educators to participate in events across the state to promote the importance of reading and education.

Obama’s Action Could Be An “Impeachable Offense.”

Nine liberal Democrats have found something they agree with Republicans on: President Barack Obama’s authorization of military strikes on Libya without congressional consent is unconstitutional.

Those Democrats join GOP critics, including Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, ranking Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and tea party favorite Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky. And Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio even suggested that Obama’s action could be an “impeachable offense.”

Sen. Paul points out that Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution says “Congress shall have power to declare war.”

“It is alarming how casually the administration talks about initiating acts of war, as though Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution does not exist,” the freshman senator says in a statement on his congressional website.
“Frankly, it is not up to the president whether or not we intervene in Libya, or set up ‘no-fly’ zones, or send troops. At least, it is not if we follow the Constitution.”

Obama has no authority to launch military attacks under the War Powers Resolution, Paul argues, because the United States has not been attacked.

“This is not our fight,” he adds. “If the administration wants to make it our fight, let them make their case before Congress and put it to a vote. I would strongly oppose such a measure, but that is the proper way to proceed.”

Rep. Roscoe Bartlett of Maryland, a senior Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, echoes Paul’s view. “The United States does not have a King's army," he said in a statement Monday. "President Obama's unilateral choice to use U.S. military force in Libya is an affront to our Constitution."

City/MDE Partnership On “Linens” Building Moves Forward

Salisbury Mayor James Ireton, Jr. is pleased to announce that the Maryland Department of the Environment will be on site at the “Linens of the Week” property on Anne Street in the Church Street neighborhood in Salisbury today, March 22nd, to retrieve soil samples from different areas on the property to determine the extent of environmental issues.

“The city and MDE are working swiftly to put in place the necessary elements to prepare for the demolition of the building. I constantly have to remind myself that each of these steps must be taken in order to get to the goal of homeownership on Anne Street. I welcome the lightning speed which MDE has afforded the city to come to Salisbury and complete their research. Residents in the Church Street neighborhood deserve better than what they are looking at on Anne Street and I assure them that change is coming.” Mayor Ireton said.

Assistant City Administrator LorĂ© Chambers said, “The City of Salisbury has been working collaboratively with the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) since September 2007, to determine the extent of environmental issues at the 407 Anne Street property. MDE staff has been very cooperative and interested in our efforts to ensure the safety of the community and to address our needs. On July 9, 2010, city staff met with Mr. James Carroll of MDE to review information about this site and to develop a strategy for a path forward. Since that time, MDE has reviewed previous environmental reports and has agreed to work with us to obtain additional soil samples.”

Candidate Laura Mitchell Responds

Hey Joe! I hope all is well...

A couple people were confused about my residence regarding something they saw on your website. I thought you might want to hear from me to clarify.

I do live in Moss Hill, however, I do not live in Section 8 housing. That qualification is based on the household income and varies from one unit to the
next. My household income has exceeded the Section 8 threshold since I moved here so I pay the maximum-rate rent. I have lived here for many years and I have
some wonderful neighbors.

Traditionally, few other elected officials have come from this side of the city, so if I am elected, it will be a great honor to represent an area where few
other candidates have resided.

Thanks for your help in clarifying this. Call me anytime.

Best-

Laura Mitchell

ANSWERS :

Taqiyya And American Education

We are all familiar with the historical idea of hand-to-hand combat. Whether it is knights on chargers, samurai warriors, or American Special Forces operators, there is something palpable and visceral about traditional combat. It is an in-your-face reality that the mind readily grasps because the fundamental rules of engagement are self-evident and the existential hazards are clear. But there is a kind of warfare that doesn't fit that mold, a warfare that is much more subtle and far more difficult to recognize. Though its goal is destruction, it is characterized by deception rather than confrontation. It is called taqiyya.

Taqiyya is an Arabic word that refers to the practice of concealing from your enemy what is truly in your heart. [1]

Muhammad used taqiyya to defeat non-Muslim tribes during the Battle of the Trench in 627 AD, and he authorized its use in connection with the murder of a poet he didn't like by the name of Kab bin al-Ashruf. According to Islamic scripture, Allah himself is considered to be the "best deceiver" (Koran 3:54), and the Koran specifically approves of deception as a way to conquer unbelievers whenever Islamic military power cannot achieve victory through open warfare (verses 3:28, 2:173; 2:185; 4:29; 22:78; 40:28).

In the United States today, certain factions of Islam are actively practicing taqiyya.[2]

They are well funded, politically protected, and deeply embedded in the fabric of our society. I don't mean the New Black Panther Party and the Nation of Islam, who swagger across the national landscape because of their friendship with the Obama administration. Those organizations openly subvert our Judeo-Christian values, but they lack the subtlety to practice taqiyya. I mean the people and organizations that secretly front for the Saudis, whose toxic brand of Wahabi Islam is actively subverting both the public and private sectors of this country. [3]

Of particular importance is America's educational system, because that is our soft underbelly. Every parent knows that children learn by a process of monkey see monkey do, so it doesn't require a rocket scientist to understand that when children are exposed to propaganda they don't come away knowing the truth.

Confusion In Libya Assault Plan: NA TO, Obama, UN Asking ‘Who’s In Charge?'

Confusion reigned Monday among U.N. and NATO nations about who’s in charge of the multi-country attack against Libya, even as an international coalition continued air strikes against Moammar Gadhafi's forces. President Barack Obama’s White House hasn’t definitively addressed that essential issue about an operation that has cost the United States well over $100 million.

Hamas Calls For Ceasefire

Hamas has offered a “ceasefire” if Israel will stop its retaliation for terror rocket and mortar attacks on its citizens in the western Negev.

“If the enemy stops the escalation and aggression against our people we will implement the Palestinian national agreement,” said the Izz a-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, in a statement issued shortly after an air strike by the Israel Air Force Monday night.

The “Palestinian national agreement” is a reference to the truce agreed upon by Gaza's primary terrorist groups in January.

Israel's Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon also warned Monday that Hamas leaders were in the crosshairs.

“If Hamas decides to escalate, we will put an end to it,” Ayalon said in a Hebrew-language interview broadcast on Voice of Israel government radio. “We have several actions [available to us] before putting ground forces in Gaza, including direct threats against Hamas leaders,” he warned.

The terrorist rulers of Gaza made the offer after Ayalon's threat, and after Israeli fighter pilots struck a terrorist tunnel and a cell of operatives. Direct hits were confirmed, according to the IDF Spokesperson's Office.

According to local witnesses quoted by AFP, at least one terrorist was wounded in the air strike.

Local sources claimed the target was a car repair shop owned by the Doghmush clan, which is connected to the Army of Islam terror group. The Army of Islam is linked to the international al-Qaeda terrorist organization.

This week alone, 56 mortars and missiles fired by Gaza terrorists have exploded in southern Israeli towns.

More than 130 attacks emanating from the Hamas-ruled region have struck southern Israel since the beginning of January.

Biden: ‘Framers Intended To Grant Congress Power To Initiate All Hostilities, Even Limited Wars’

After studying the constitutional language governing the use of military force and the debates that the Framers had on the issue, Joe Biden determined that the Founding Fathers had vested the power to authorize even the limited use of military force in the Congress not the president---unless it was necessary for the president to act swiftly to repel an attack on the United States or to rescue U.S. citizens.

Biden derided the opposite position—that the president could use military force without congressional authorization—as a “monarchist” view of presidential power.

That was in 1998, however, when Biden was in the Senate.

Today, Biden serves as vice president to a commander in chief who has just committed the U.S. military to an action in Libya that was authorized by the U.N. Security Council but was never even so much as debated in the U.S. Congress let alone put to a vote.

Nor has the president argued that the aim of the military action in Libya is to repel an imminent attack on the United States or rescue U.S. citizens.

“The rationale for vesting the power to launch war in Congress was simple,” Biden said in a Senate speech delivered on July 30, 1998. “The Framers' views were dominated by their experience with the British King, who had unfettered power to start wars. Such powers the Framers were determined to deny the President.”

The Welfare Reform Act

Since President Johnson declared a war on poverty in 1964, Americans have spent more than $16 trillion on state and federal welfare programs.

(Watch this video for more information.)

Over the next decade we’re slated to spend another $10 trillion.  Welfare’s chief function should be to help people reach the point where they no longer need it, but even with all these resources put toward assistance for the poor, poverty is actually higher today than it was in the 1970s.

In 1996, House Republicans worked with President Clinton to reform one welfare program, which helped millions of families leave the welfare rolls to provide for themselves again.  Despite this success, national welfare spending has nearly doubled since 1996.  There are currently 77 federal programs that provide assistance specifically to low-income families.  While these programs can offer needed support, they can also trap people into a lifetime of government dependence
.
Decades of experience prove we can’t just throw money at the problem of poverty.  We need a smarter approach that promotes self-reliance and acknowledges the interconnected nature of all our anti-poverty programs.  That’s why last week the RSC introduced H.R. 1167, the Welfare Reform Act of 2011.  This bill builds on the reforms of 1996 by requiring food stamp recipients to either work or prepare for a job, helping them to become independent of government assistance.  It also gives taxpayers a clearer picture of national welfare spending and returns the federal welfare budget to pre-recession levels after unemployment falls to 6.5%.  Let’s end this cycle of government dependence.  At the end of the day, the most effective welfare benefit is the one that leads to a job.

God Bless,
Congressman Jim Jordan
Chairman, Republican Study Committee
