Candidate Laura Mitchell Responds

Hey Joe! I hope all is well...

A couple people were confused about my residence regarding something they saw on your website. I thought you might want to hear from me to clarify.

I do live in Moss Hill, however, I do not live in Section 8 housing. That qualification is based on the household income and varies from one unit to the
next. My household income has exceeded the Section 8 threshold since I moved here so I pay the maximum-rate rent. I have lived here for many years and I have
some wonderful neighbors.

Traditionally, few other elected officials have come from this side of the city, so if I am elected, it will be a great honor to represent an area where few
other candidates have resided.

Thanks for your help in clarifying this. Call me anytime.

Best-

Laura Mitchell

  1. notice she doesn't say what the maximum rate amount is for her apartment, the reason is simple it's very very low

  2. A couple of things came to mind to me....why would she know about the Section 8 income requirements? I've lived in a few apartments...never have I inquired about what the Section 8 req's were....and what is the "maximum rate"? Is that the rent that the other tenants with jobs and families pay, or is it pro-rated to a MAXIMUM level because she has some "qualification". It would have been a clearer statement to say "I live in Moss Hill and take no subsidies on my rent and have no public assistance of any kind whatsoever". Instead of the halfhearted legalese technical explanantion.

  3. Why is it anyones business what her rent is? Bottom line is she is breaking no laws nor is she "working the system". She is not doing anything illegal. Right or wrong, that is just how section 8 works. So, I suggest you call HUD to investigate. When you get the same answer, maybe you can take up your fight with them and leave this woman alone. All she wants to do is serve her community.

  4. She knows because she has lived in one once before, also because the manager at the moss hill apartments is in someway shape or form either a good friend or related to her...

  5. I see the SAPOA group is hard at it, slandering anyone that doesn't tow the line for them. Newsflash to all of you busy bodies, it's none of your freaking business how much she pays in rent. She told you she does NOT receive a subsidy so leave it alone. You people are the reason Salisbury is the way it is right now. If you spent half as much time worrying about your own business as you did sticking your nose in other peoples personal lives this would be a much better place to live, instead of the ghetto it has become.

She is running a good, clean campaign, without pandering to anyone, unlike your boys Boda and Dryden. Next thing you'll want to know is if she sleeps with that light on. That too is none of your business, she pays her electric bill, not you.

Find someone else to slander like the slum lords that have created this mess with the help of those council majority members that has been seated on the council over the past 12 years.

Seriously you have to be the most negative commentor on these boards. Not only did this Miss Mitchell take time out of her day to respond and clarify some stupid moronic comments posted against her that were 100% untrue, which she did not have to do, she also explained that she has lived there for quite a bit of time and has been paying rent. So what if she knows what the requirements for section 8 housing, I know the requirements to become a criminal does that make me one for knowing ? You are a pessimistic person who seems to have a generally bleak outlook on life. Hope your life sucks just a little less now that you have complained enough about something proven untrue that you have been so vacal about these past two days. Its funny Lara defends herself on here by sending Joe a letter that was completely unneccesary since she does not have to justify herself to anyone besides the law, yet she does and you act like she is still some scum bag leaching off society. Grow up and clean your own closet then you can come back and complain about others.

So she is supposed to put how much she pays for her rent on an online blog just so that you can judge whether or not she is paying fair value? How about you post how much your monthly rent/mortgage is under your real name if you sign in since it isnt such a big deal. We have the most inconsiderate, ungrateful people around who will try to bring down anyone just because they are trying to do something with their lives.

  8. the max payment is $396 to any Moss Hill resident. A lot of people that live in there truly do need the assistance and they pay less than 396 because their working salaries are the pits. Wicomico County schools pays their teachers assistants less than $20,000 per year. This is the place for them.

the 396 is the cost to renter when you make above a certain thresh-hold. The actual cost to M. Twilley is more, but the remainder beyond the 396 is still subsidised by the Government.

I am not bashing this woman for where she lives, but do not lead a trail that does not cover the complete truth. A partial tale is a lie. That tells you all you need to know about Political candidates.

PS: Most anyone who lives on the "end" units at Moss Hill, knows or is related the ownership.

  11. Imclaim --

go back in your hole -- some persons, me included, know about "Section 8" rules even though we have never rented or lived in such an apartment.

Ms. Mitchell is well imformed about many things and will be a diligent member of the City Council, and that's why I'll vote for her.

And I applaud her for keeping her cool in the face of the mud being thrown at her by dirtballs like you.

  14. $396 may be the max rent for any section 8 housing, but NOT ALL of the units there are subsidized. I don't know how much rent she pays, it is none of my business, but I can tell you that the units who do NOT receive government subsidy are much higher than that.

  15. It's not like the city pays well anyway so you would think the elected officials would actually need Section 8.

  20. the maximum rate is $372 per month with all basic utilities included.i highly doubt she pays the maximum she is running for office and she is the typical left wing liberal looney(liar abd cheater).another relative of the family that runs moss hill lived there for a couple years the husband was a dr at prmc and they paid $25 dollars a month until they relocated to texas.i wouldnt believe a word she says she is wacko.

  21. Not buying her answer..
And the whole outrage of this story is not how much she pays for her rent its that if she legally doesn't qualify and shes living there then shes comitting a crime. THATS THE ISSUE!

The issue is there are nosey people who have an agenda and thats why this story was brought to light. Plain and simple.

Exactly, no comeback to anything stated earlier. That is because your wrong and you know it. There is no question at all here, just someone sticking thier nose where it doesn't belong and making a story out of absolutely nothing. If she is living there, has been for years and no one says a word, tell me why it is brought to light now if it is so illegal. Why was it not brought to the publics attention BEFORE she ran for city council ? Your very, very, very ignorant if you think that no one has an agenda by relasing this. WAKE UP!

  24. OK...gotta respond to the "ignorant" and "negative" charge... remember, she is NOW a public figure. Her lifestyle IS an issue. My WHOLE interest in this affair is NOT whether she's on welfare or what have you. It is this --- and also keep in mind that I questioned the veracity of the story yesterday --- does a person who is attempting to be an elected official, a "leader" with access and control over MY taxes and my income, have the right or ability to do so if there are questions (valid qustions, that is) about his/her integrity. And the story definitely questioned her integrity. If you like her, or would vote for her, and these things offend you, you have every right to come to her defense. That does not, however negate the questions surrounding her integrity. And she recognizes that -- thats why she responded. And how much she pays in rent IS no ones business, except when you run for office and how much you pay (and more specifically, how you got that amount) DOES matter. Maybe not to her supporters. And yes, integrity STILL matters to some. Not many, but some.

    Well put.

As they say, "question authority". More importantly, question them before they become authority. This individual chose to run for public office and guess what? Everything about her should be public until she once again becomes a private citizen.

People tend to forget the onslaught by the media on Sarah Palin that continues today. Palin is NO LONGER a public official but a private citizen.

  26. It is distasteful and inappropriate to delve into someone's personal life regarding issues that do not have bearing on the person's ability to set policy in a fair and balanced way. However, like Councilwoman Shields, if Ms. Mitchell is getting pricing on her rent that wouldn't be available to others (if that is the case)does that call into question her neutrailty to make decisions that are in the best interest of the city, or could a vote on a metter related tothe rental industry jeopardize her living situation? It's a fair question when asked in that way. Does the public have a right to know that someone who will be in charge of the city budget has filed bankruptcy, I think it's germane. That has been a topic of discussion during past elections and it's turned out that the officials who were in that situation haven't done a very good job watching my tax dollars.

Please read what you just said. Nothing actually other than an IF statement. Is this person someone you feel can provide fair representation ? Why? It's YOUR opinion after all that counts.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think the real question is not how much rent she pays but should she be living there if her income is above the threshold. If her income is over the limits, then shouldn't she make that apartment available to someone who truly needs the help because of low income? If this is truly the case, and I am not saying it is or is not, then isn't she acting unethical? Acting unethical does not mean she is breaking the law but goes towards her character. Just something to ponder.

  29. How does sapoa get dragged into this? Under 400 for apt that houses 3 people is subsidized. She may or may not pay maximum amount but her home is still subsidized. Not the kind of person I want making decisions on my city finances. She has very little experience and doesn't manage her person finances well. Does she have any success stories? Successes that make her qualified to make decisions for our city? Oh and funny how people bash sapoa but then support people who live in housing made possible by sapoa members.

  31. I e-mailed Ms. Mitchell about the piece on Joe's blog as well as all the comments it had generated. Ms. Mitchell kindly responded with a very nice letter detailing her situation--more details, in fact, than she supplied in her letter to Mr.Albero. Those of you who have commented that where she lives should have no bearing on her fitness for office are exactly right. As I wrote to Ms. Mitchell, she has my vote. I have met her, and she is very bright and articulate. She will make a wonderful addition to the City Council.

  34. Are you people just plain stupid or what? Just because a complex accepts a subsidy, it does NOT mean every unit is subsidized. How do you KNOW without a doubt that she gets it? YOU DON'T!! Would you ask any of the other council members how much they pay for their housing? I doubt it. HUD works like this, since apparently most of you don't know. Like it or not, when you enter HUD housing, you must meet certain requirements. Every so often, you must verify your income. If your income goes up, so does your rent. If you go beyond the income requirements, you may lose that subsidy all together. Obviously you can't kick someone out as long as they are paying the rent they are required to pay. She said she likes the neighborhood and her neighbors. What is so difficult for you people to understand? All of you should do what you said you are going to do. Call HUD and educate yourselves. I'm sure there is nothing illegal going on. If there was, she would have been asked to leave long ago. HUD does audits and inspections. There is documentation they expect to see and just because Mrs. Mitchell may have a relative working there doesn't change that. Obviously those of you claiming to be neighbors should get jobs because you have WAY too much time on your hands. Maybe then YOU could afford to move out of there.

You act like I'm leading the charge here or something...I didn't print the article, but merely commented on it. I'm suprised you didn't call me racist, homophobic, misogynist, or something else. But I'm sure you're not finished yet.

  39. I work with a man who originally qualified for rent assistance. He says that he has to turn in paperwork each year and have employer verify information- but, that even though he and his wife have had increases and would not qualify now, their rent stays the same- that's the system
    go figure

  40. As much as I despise her political background and everything I know about her, I think she would be a better choice than Manure Boata and Orville Dryden. Both of the latter are obviously financed by the slum lords!
