State Says American Flag Violates Law

A Maryland community is up in arms after state highway workers removed an American flag honoring military personnel from a traffic circle and threw it into a dump truck.

“We want our flag back,” Rhonda Winkler told Fox News & Commentary. “We are patriots and we love America.”

Winkler and her family erected the flag in a traffic circle three years ago in the town of Woodbine. They posted the flag to honor their nephew, a soldier deployed to Afghanistan.

About a month ago a car crashed into the roundabout damaging a tree and destroying the original flag. So Winkler’s husband and an 88-year-old World War Two veteran replaced the flag. And that’s when the trouble started.

Winkler said she received a telephone call alerting her that state highway workers had taken down the flag and the flag pole, tossing both into the back of a dump truck.

  1. These actions are totally absurd. The American Flag is our symbol of freedom. Regardless of what you think of our President and our Legislature the flag still stands for freedom. Over the couse of our countries history alot of AMERICANS have fought and died to protect our right to fly "Old Glory". I say put the flag back up or at least give the flag back to its owner.

  2. This is America the last time I looked not Russia or some other communist country. The American Flag should be welcome everywhere in the USA. It is a symbol of our freedom what little we have left after the Obama administration. The flag should be able to be placed anywhere in this country with no repricussions.

  3. Amazing how this same state law is overlooked for all those people putting up shrines at accident sites along the roadways.
Always seemed funny to me that it is only Christian drivers getting killed, cus all you see is crosses, Jewish drivers must drive better cus you don’t see stars of David along the roads!

  4. Isn't it illegal to dispose of a flag by taking it to the dump?

  7. *sigh*. It doesn't matter what kind of flag it was. It should not have been put there in the first place. I take issue with the way our flag was disposed of, the flag is something that should be respected.

It's a shame the spin on this story. The story should read "With good intentions, trespassers litter and violate public law and erect a driving distraction/hazard."

Want a flag put up there? Go through the proper legal channels to erect a monument, or flag, on that bit public land. That, or put it up on your own property.

I am so confused as to all of the comments on this page. Are you all so blinded by nationalism that you forgot rule of law?

To rip off Penn & Teller (and horribly paraphrase the quote), "may be I burn a flag, not because I hate this country, but in celebration of the freedoms that this flag stands for...."
