A Letter To The Editor 12-21-11

Hey Joe,

Talk about fiscal responsibility, state decides to save money they are going to turn off lights on Vienna Bridge to save $2000 a year in electricity, and award a contract to remove lights for $26,000. Somewhere in my elementary school days when I learned math, it equates out to a 13 year payback. Think they need to go back to school?

  1. Great savings.... especially when you factor in the increase in car accidents when the summer season rolls around.

  2. I say fire the idiot who came up with the idea and save $75,000 a year.

  3. First, throwing an "off" switch should do the trick... do they think if rhe lights are still there one of them will sneak down at night and turn the switch back on?
Second, like 405 sex, fire the idiot who brainstormed this, but refuse to pay for any continuing education to put him in another field... That field is full of idiots already!

  4. It the $26,000 was already in the operating budget then it is a net positive if it goes to something that will create a saving as opposed to something taht will require maintenance. So yes, it actually is a savings.

  5. Yeah, this seems to me to be the wrong move. The fog in that area can be some of the thickest and being in such a rural area it gets dark as hell out there. I know vehicles have headlights, but unless they come automatically some idiots try to drive without them. I hope this does not happen.

  6. Um, I'm 430pm, and to the following posters, no. First, spending 26,000 to remove the lights totally would preclude using them in times of emergency and bad weather. This is a bad move. To call this a "savings" is incredibly stupid. If you "need" to spend $26k of your budget in order to "save money", you need a job in the private sector to understand; I won't be able to explain it to you!

  8. Sell the lights and posts and have the buyer remove them. Have the removal of lights inspected after the fact to make sure everything was done according to contract and specifications.

  9. I bet if this happens then next year someone will decide it was a bad idea and then we will pay to have them put back at a dramatically higher cost. Unbelieveable that they don't just turn them off. But they leave those million dollar message signs on to tell you there is no traffic backups.

  10. or they could leave them up, have all the lights alternate in use, one month, half come on, the next month the other half operate, which will now increase the life span, and the lights will still be there if ever needed in 5 years, because like someone said above, we will pay more to replace them again. Joe who was this person that decided to do this?
