Black Caucus To Submit Legislative Redistricting Maps This Week, Seeking More Black Senators

The Legislative Black Caucus plans on submitting General Assembly redistricting maps to the Governor’s Redistricting Advisory Committee (GRAC) this week, saying black voters are under-represented in the legislature. “We can’t operate in the same way we’ve operated in the past because we’re going to run afoul of the Voting Rights Act,” said the Black Caucus Redistricting Committee chair, Del. Aisha Braveboy.

  1. Map it by race, map it by income, map it by party lines; racism being promoted daily by our "representatives". Why not just map it by populations of areas like the CONSTITUTION requires?

  5. 8:12, the 12% figure you cite might refer to the percentage of Afro-Americans in the US, but the article is about Maryland. The black caucus does have a point in that 30% of Maryland is Afro-American, making it one of the highest African-American populations of any state; however, only 17% of the State Legislature (both houses) is Afro-American (I am using the National Conf. of State Legislatures website for the 17% figure and the census figures for the demographic makeup of MD). I am white, Republican, and fairly conservative, but I also believe in fairness. I am thinking of how I would feel if I were African-American.

  6. Funny. It's so terrible that the black caucus is doing this. Yet republicans (and other Dem caucuses) have long been gerrymandering to consolidate their preferred demographic.
