Mayor Ireton Removes Himself From Council Work Session After Being Abusive To Council Once Again

This time the Council was NOT going to take Mayor Ireton's verbal abuse and called him out on it.

Mayor Ireton was not happy with the answers he was receiving on the old Fire Station 16 and demanded answers right then and there. Council President Terry Cohen tried to explain they could not provide answers to his question as they had just sat through almost 2 hours with the Salisbury/Wicomico County Director of Economic & Development to help guide them in the right direction. Mrs. Cohen went on to say that she had responded in a letter just recently explaining to Mayor Ireton they could not answer his question until they spoke with Mr. Ryan and discussed it more as a Council.

Mayor Ireton aggressively shouted, "WELL, THAT WAS A LONG WINDED ANSWER"! "YES OR NO"?

Council President immediately called the Work Session into recess but not before mentioning Mayor Ireton was a GUEST to these proceedings. Mayor Ireton tried to go after Mrs. Cohen again but she just stood up and walked away.

Mayor Ireton then leaned over to the Daily Times Reporter, not once, but twice and said, "I hope you got all that".

Mayor Ireton then leaned over to Mr. Spies and started challenging his position and Mr. Spies told Mayor Ireton he was out of line and his statements were uncalled for. After some heated debate Mayor Ireton turned towards me and said, I saw you leaning over to listen in, I hope you got all that. I replied, not only did I get it all Jim, I wrote it all down. As he stood up in anger and started walking out of the room he started yelling from the hall and into the office next door, GOOD, THIS TIME I WON'T HAVE TO READ ALL THAT SHIT ON YOUR BLOG AND MAYBE YOU'LL GET IT RIGHT THIS TIME. I immediately responded, you need to watch your mouth in front of these Ladies Jim. He responded, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO TO ME IN THIS BUILDING JOE!

Clearly the Mayor is upset because we're not only providing the TRUTH about a petition drive that failed, Mayor Ireton is VERY upset that we've called him out in private meetings with former Mayor Barrie Tilghman, former Council President Mike Dunn and several other new Dirty Dozen has been's.

Mayor Ireton then walked into a private meeting with the "Play Nice" Daily Times and clearly another meeting with the "Play Nice" WMDT.

Mayor Ireton, the people have spoken. They, (in masses) are NOT happy with your performance, or shall I say the lack thereof. You're a photo op Mayor who has accomplished next to nothing. You want to play ball, let's play ball because Joe Albero does NOT play nice. I'm NOT going to spread your stupid BS special feel good agenda items and paint you as the Little Boy Blue you expect the rest of the "Play Nice" media to do.

We, (Salisbury News) will drive you out of Office and prove you to be a one term, (if you make it that far) Mayor. I firmly believe ALL citizens will take you to task every time you treat women poorly. Your days are now numbered Mayor Ireton and every one will see you for who you are, a school teacher bully who is immature and needs to grow up and act like a man for once.

I'll close with this. Shanie Shields tried to defend the Mayor on the Station 16 issues by saying the building has not sat vacant for 60 days. We need to do something now with that building, she said. HELLO! The building has sat empty for more than 4 years under your time on Council Shanie Shields. Stop acting like and Idiot and learn to be quiet before putting your foot in your mouth.

  1. This is really embarassing to the people in and around Salisbury. He should be given the opportunity to step down and if he doesn't then be should be removed from office. This is yet another act of the 3 ring circus known as the city AND the city council. I asked, I reply I'm from East Salisbury.

  17. Was the woman innocent or is she an incompetent troublemaker intent on undermining our mayor and the progress he brings to Salisbury? gotta ask!

One thing is certain: whether it's on a national level or local level, when one enters the rough and tumble world of politics, it doesn't matter if they are man or woman, if they can't deal with talking and playing rough, they are in the wrong business!

  18. If i lived in the area represented by Shannie I would be very embarassed. Nobody can be that dumb, clueless and misinformed. Prime example our what our pulic school system produces, its very sad for her constituants.

  19. Jim has a habit of going off and exploding. I have witnessed it myself when SBYnews started to cross examine Delegate Conway and Mathius at a town hall meeting held at the public library. He blurted - 'here we go again' when SBYnews started asking some pertinent questions about Maryland's budget. I know because I was sitting right in front of him.

    What a jerk!

  20. I am not excusing Mayor Ireton at all for his choice of language and the temper that he displayed, but is it just possible that he is plain frustrated with how HE's being treated by the Council? Both he and Terry Cohen appear to be intractable, not wanting to give an inch. When are the mayor and Council going to be able to sit down together and act civilly to each other. They need to compromise; both sides seem unwilling or unable to do so.

  21. Whats the deal now with the fire station? Is something else going on?? Let us know!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Shanie defending Ireton wow how much stupidity could the room handle with out exploding. I could see the new hero of salisbury proclaimed by the daily times amiling his head off. Mike Dunn is loving the wide open road Ireton is laying for him. I I had a better job I would probably move

  23. i live in fruitland and have been following your local crappy politics for some time now.. This is the first time I have ssen a council that is doing the right thing and on the right path. Its better then prime time TV thats for sure your choice of mayors is hilarious and previous council ..keystone cops with soprano tendencies, simply entertaining

  24. 6:17 - And just how were Terry and Debbie treated by the Council when it was the other way around? They just kept plugging along, telling the truth, and working for the people of this town. Ireton, along with Mitchell and Shields just need to go - they are such babies and try their pouting and tantrum routines to get their way. We've had enough, time for recall. Oh, and thank you Joe for telling everyone out here how it was tonight at the work session. The times, wmdt and wboc would have put a slant on it, turned it all around and made Ireton Baby Boy look just wonderful.

His unqualified fire chief Jeff Simpson throws fits all the time. He is a ticking time bomb waiting to explode. Jeff Simpson ordered the volunteer firefighters of station 2 to a mandatory meeting on a Friday night. He went off several times in a threatening and intimidating manner. Then he apologized saying it was the "heat of the moment." This guy is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Jeff Simpson needs to go and go now. Ireton if you want to salvage your job you need to get rid of this clown now.

  26. 6:17, have you ever gone to one of these meetings, watched it on tv or listened to the audios?

I have and Cohen is not "intractable."

She has been very patient. Ireton is one of those immature bullies that make everyone they come in contact with look bad.

  28. I wish we could have an emergency meeting and get him out of office. It's so embarrassing when family or friends out of town ask or talk about him. He has done nothing for the people other than hold the title of mayor. He obviously has his own agenda to fulfill and wants to pull anyone he can into it. He is such a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  29. In case anyone hasn't figured it out yet, Ireton is doing his damnedest to make Cohen look bad, messing up the council, saying one nasty quote in the paper after another.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Joe why dont you get a petition and put it in your office and see how many you can get to sign it to remove the mayor from office. Probally take a couple of days.

    ReplyDelete
  31. WMDT and WBOC were NOT in the room. The Mayor called them for interviews immediately after he left the room. The DT's walked out VERY early into the meeting so she could interview Ireton in private. Jim left very soon after the DT's reporter walked out.

The local MSM cannot afford to place reporters in these meetings any more, it's that simple. They are only reporting what they are fed by the Mayor and it's a real joke any more. The citizens have NO CLUE what's truly going on in this town.

I haven't even seen another Blogger in ANY meeting. They too are only reporting what they are FED.

You want the real story, come to Salisbury News where we can't be bullied and you'll always get the truth. You may not like it but at least its real and delivered in real time.

  32. I've been to 2 different press conferences in the past year (as a citizen, i'm not a reporter) and both times I'd personally witnessed Jim outside in the hallways throwing hissy fits and pulling rank and being a bully, to people who really didn't deserve his chastizing. He really didn't care who overheard him. One of the times I was standing near Jonathan Taylor (i know not your best bud Joe) and I'm like wow, ok the mayor has no clue who I am, but you'd think he'd be smart enough to keep his voice down where the bloggers wouldn't hear him. But he was "out of control" throwing a temper tamtrum and literally stomping his foot like a 3 year old girl.

Why would that even matter? It's ok to shout at, act immature, unprofessional if she were a trouble-maker?

You also mentioned the rough and tumble nature of politics. Your experience must only come from backwoods inept cities.

Now I see where the bullies in school are taught how to act. It's rough and tumble in schools too.

  44. I stopped in the City Center recently on a weekend to look at possibly renting office space. It was like a "ghost town" with most of the space sitting empty. What a shame for what could be a nice building to work out of. It's like the Mayor could give a darn about helping downtown be more business friendly. Instead he is more concerned how many times he has his picture taken and even stranger....the picture of him recently carrying what looked like a "purse". The plaza is dead and he certainly has done nothing to improve it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. anonymous 7:32, I firmly disagree. I believe Mayor Ireton has done a fantastic job, (especially in these difficult financial times).

Mind you, his main interest is on 3rd Friday but he did hire a company to fix all the brick work on the Plaza, he has replaced the trash cans and they have planted quite a bit of flowers/shrubs.

As far as the Center goes, give it a few weeks and you'll see at least three businesses moving into the building. Unfortunately, one of them will be relocating from another location on Main Street but at least they're staying in Downtown Salisbury.

Look, even if I was in charge of getting businesses to relocate to the Downtown area it would be no easy task.

Shanie Shields kept asking, (one of her best questions ever since she's been on Council) "what incentives does the City/County provide. The answer was, not much. Ireton went on in his usual form with a speech that really said NOTHING in the end and this is something they must work on immediately.

Other Cities are offering FREE taxes for the first year. If you realy want businesses to relocate, this is what your going to have to compete with. Then you need EVERY ONE participating in helping to encourage businesses to move Downtown. This includes the Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Salisbury Committee and every one else.

It can be done but it cannot be done alone.

  46. 6:49, I saw the DT's has switched their comments to Facebook. Dumb, dumb and dumber. It was one of the half way decent things they had going.

  47. Until the vorters of this community understand that the City has out lived its usefulness this anarchy WILL continue. You can point all the fingers you want at the Council, the individuals on the council or the Mayor (the positions)but until you change the total organizational structure of this City you WILL continue to get the same results. When will the people of this town begin to see this after at least 30 years of this crap???

    ReplyDelete
  48. Do they have 3rd Friday every month? If so that's too much esp if they have the same vendors over and over and even if the entertainment changes.
If they want to do something monthly they need to promote, promote and more promote the main entertainment more so than the event itself.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Maybe Salisbury should do something like they are doing in Pocomoke with the city building a restaurant and renting it out with Station 16? In this case they could renovate the building.

  50. This morning I watched WMDT and it is clear what the long-range plan is- dissolve the city and have the county take it over. No thanks.
Palmer Gillis was whining about the council and the Feldman's building this morning and Jim has hustled right out to add his two cents. Reality - the city doesn't own Feldman's. The city seems to want to TAKE the building from its rightful owner and then Palemr wants it and Jim wants to help him????? Palmer wants the city to be dissolved into the county. He doesn't even live here.
Jim is helping by doing everything he can to slow the council down and use the press to fan the flames (with Laura and Shanie in tow). Jim is out of control with his melt downs. I saw it for myself yesterday.
Then, you have Barrie Tilghman, Mike Dunn, Louise Smith, Laura Mitchell, Shanie Shields, Palmer GIllis, and a whole host of political has beens with an agenda of "crushing" teaming up with Jim and circulating the petition. That's their right, even though they misrepresented the purpose of the change to many signers. Then, they fell short on the signatures and made city staff come in on the weekend to "receive" it anyway so that they can - you guessed it - have another press op. A little abuse of power? Now they still want to take it to referrendum and continue to call the press for more - yes, press ops.
Oh, a new one was dropped yesterday. Since the fireworks will be at SU on July 4th, the Only Batemen road improvements will have to work around that. I guess that will somehow be the council's fault too.
This is a scheme by a well known cast of characters to create chaos to make the citizens feel so frustrated and hopeless that they will disband the city. We have good representatives in Terry, Debbie and TIm. I will continue to support them.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Build a restaurant like Pocomoke did? You apparently are not aware of the political intrigue involved with this turkey of a restaurant. If you think Salisbury has favoritism, political payoffs and graft, you haven't seen how blatantly Pocomoke City does it and makes it look perfectly legal.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I no longer care what good Ireton may do because the way he does it is harming our city, just like Barrie Tilghman. "My way or the highway." And at what price tag?

Joe, I wouldn't mind giving away a year's taxes to new businesses if they can really survive and aren't just another low-wage hash slinging joint or developer sweetheart deal. We don't need another Barrie Dunn Comegys round of developer reimbursements and other free rides at taxpayer expense.

How about giving me a year off from taxes? Hell, give all the taxpayers a year off. Bet they'll revive the economy fast. Bet we can live without the government for a year, too.

I'll win again just to spite you, you bitch.

    ReplyDelete
  54. anonymous 9:05, Look, whatever Barrie Tilghman, Mike Dunn and Jim Ireton hjave done to encourage businesses to relocate Downtown hasn't worked.

I want all of you to think about what I'm about to tell you for several minutes.

Yesterday the Mayor AND Council had to ASK the Economic & Development Director what is offered incentive wise to encourage businesses to move to Salisbury.

Now come on Folks, SERIOUSLY? They have to ASK and haven't done so in the PAST!

There's more money in GRANTS and far less WORK if you ask the state or feds to help out.

We need a Mayor/Leader that is willing to really step it up and go after rebuilding Salisbury.

There are so many drug companies relocating to the Western Shore that could easily set up shop here on the Eastern Shore. However, you have to WORK for it. You have to have your Delegates WORKING to get it done.

Anyhow, I could go on forever preaching. Its easier for Ireton and Tilghman to go the political route and increase the size of government by hiring more staff to create those grant applications than it is to demand results from those people hired to bring business to the Shore. It's that simple.

    ReplyDelete
  55. What a joke of a mayor. He needs counseling and medication.

    ReplyDelete
  56. At the City and County levels, there is alot of back biting. Yelling, then I am so sorry afterwards. If someone were fired after an incident or even written up, like they do in the real working world. They would learn a lesson. We can only hope.
    They need backbone.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Glad i dont live in Salisbury and wouldnt admit it if i did or i would move. What a mess

    ReplyDelete
  58. You very rarely see Rick Pollitt at county council meetings. Why must Ireton insist he is needed at city council meetings other than to obstruct? Doesn't he get PAC-14 in his hood? He can sit at home and send text messages to Laura and Shanie like Barrie used to do with Comegys.

He's just a bag of dung.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Shanie puts every other thing in her mouth , why not her foot also.

    ReplyDelete
  60. If this was a Council work session, why didn't WMDT, WBOC or the Daily Times contact the members of the council for a story or maybe they should have been in the meeting so they knew what was going on first hand. Maybe they just don't want the truth.

    ReplyDelete
  61. 9:05, I challenge you to name 1 (one) instance or example of what you are accusing the Mayor and Council of Pocomoke City of doing. They have done nothing illegal as you claim, so let's make this easier on you and challenge you to name 1 (one) instance of something which could have the appearance of being unethical on their part in regards to the restaurant.

    ReplyDelete
  62. "Reality - the city doesn't own Feldman's. The city seems to want to TAKE the building from its rightful owner and then Palemr wants it and Jim wants to help him?????"

Exactly what I think 8:58. And he wants the building torn down by the city, knowing the expense involved. Then they will place a lien against the previous owner knowing full well you can't get blood out of a turnip and that liens ain't worth the paper they are written on. Then the city will force foreclosure and obtain title, then sell it to someone....Hmmmmmmm.

What do you think it costs to tear that building down? A couple of hundred thousand?

    ReplyDelete
  63. Anon 11:36
Considering the fact that the building is more than likely full of asbestos, it could cost a lot more than a couple hundred thousand to demolish it. Probably has lead based paint too.
These two items have to be disposed of in very specific ways.
EPA will be ALL over that site!

    ReplyDelete
  64. It was deemed to have a "toxic mold" problem also. Not sure if that requires specialized consideration also.

    ReplyDelete
  65. When or if they demolish the old Feldman building the city will have to close off areas of downtown, close down Mills street and part of West Main so the citizens are not exposed to asbestos and lead dust when they are busting it up.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Just because Shanie doesn't know what incentives are out there doesn't mean the rest of the council didn't know, Joe.

Somebody made a really good point that the media isn't even going to the meetings to get the story.

They are not presenting the news. They are presenting "The News According to Jim Ireton."
