BREAKING NEWS--The Great Petition Drive Has FAILED

The petition drive regarding the Salisbury City Attorney that was created by Laura Mitchell and Mayor Jim Ireton has failed. Today was the deadline to collect over 2,500 signatures needed for the petition and they knew they did not receive the required amount. However the Mayor called in 2 city employees to validate the information and WE paid them double time.

This is what happens when people like Barry Tilghman and Mike Dunn and The New Dirty Dozen try to get their hands back in the arena.

Here is the kicker- Jim Ireton called a press conference with the local MSM for yet another photo-op.

It is no wonder our Survey Question today has received so many hits.

  1. I thought that was Ireton's voice I heard on the TV.

Are you saying the taxpayers paid for this publicity stunt?

Maybe the next petition should be a recall on Ireton and Mitchell!

  2. Glad it failed! I could have respect for an honest effort if it was run by citizens, but it was run by two politicians currently on the people's payroll. This was just a political ploy. For shame! Do make this front and center tomorrow, Joe. They wanted press attention? Give it to them!

  3. Brenda is a salaried employee as is her assistant, Kim. No overtime or double time is paid. They might receive comp time but big deal, their time is worth something. We knew this petition would go no where. They left petition forms in public locations for anyone willing to sign with no one to attest for the signatures. These are not valid. Laura Mitchell is a loser. End of story.

  4. Absolutely the next petition should be a recall on Ireton & Mitchell. And how dare he to call in two employees in on a Sunday to count so the citizens of this town have to pay double time for them to do this counting. Arrogance at its best.

  5. And it's no wonder you didn't print all the responses. Typical.

  6. Not a word about this in today's Daily slime.

  7. Great News

And it will be even better when you report that Ireton is no longer mayor.

But first lets stop his redistricting scam!

  10. Please keep this post at the top all day Sunday, unless Ireton resigns or has another hissy fit.

  11. I've stopped going to Giant and the Sage Diner, please post the other places that let Mitchell, Ireton and Dunn pander to the public.

  12. This is not about Ireton. This is about changing the charter for future Mayors, and doing so without any input from the public, which is something that you would be all over if it weren't for the fact that it was Debbie that wanted the change.

  13. It's another important step to better city government, thanks to Campbell. Cohen and Spies and despite the efforts of the likes of Barrie, Dunn, Cathcart, Sarbanes and others to sabotage the public interest.

  14. Looks like DUnn kicked off his mayoral campaign on WBOC last night. He's going to bring July
4th fireworks back to Salisbury and start a non-rofit to do it. I love fireworks, but this guy has a huge debt to pay to Salisbury for the financial damage that he has caused...the failed wastewater treatment plant, the developer reimbursements for his familya dn his buddies, and the old mall fiasco, to mention just a few. My prediction, he and Ireton are now aligned and just before the next election we will see something new happen with the old mall and other things that have been stalled suddenly break loose. I am tired of politicians like that and hope that someone more like Cohen, Spies or Campbell will run and give us some relief from the politacal circus-style of leadership.

  15. Now maybe Laura can get back to work on the councils concerns in stead of self serving obstruction.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think an outside company should count the votes for Mayor. It should not be done in-house by a City employee.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I don't understand why councilwoman Laura Mitchell would be opposed to having unrestricted access to the City Attorney...which is precisely what the charter change is about.

    ReplyDelete
  18. So that's it then? This sinks to the bottom with hardly a word? The troublemakers just slink away to fight again another day?

Funny that Mike Dunn is front page news the day after the petition drive fails. Not that I mind getting fireworks back in the city but he's tied to the woman who ran them out in the first place, Barrie Tilghman.

  20. Ha! Ha! Ha! Laura Mitchell!! You have been USED, ABUSED and OWNED by Jim Ireton!!

Laura Mitchell you need to get a life. You need to get a Job. You need to get a life away from the Democrat Party. You are a typical Left Winger that can't think for yourself!

  21. If they knew that they didn't have enough signatures, why did they make City employees come in on Saturday to receive the petition sheets?

LMBO. Have you lost your mind? This is every bit about Jim Ireton.

  24. If you think Salisbury is disfunctional now just be prepared for it to get worse. The Council has succeeded in making a HALF step towards City Manager form of government. This is far worse than either the form we have now or a complete switch. Who needs the City any way. Salisbury has long outlived its usefullness as an entity. Maybe the new powerful can lead us in that direction like the people want. Oh ... that means LEAD. Something this COuncil is not capable of doing

    ReplyDelete
  25. 7:13, is that you, Laura Mitchell? Or Jim Ireton? You said, "without any input from the public"? That's not true because I watched it on PAC14 and people got up to speak. Is that what you told people to get them to sign?

The public has input on this for years. We've been crying out for someone to do something about the bad laws that get written, the lousy contracts, the secrecy from the mayor's office.

Somebody (Campbell, Cohen & Spies) finally had the GUTS to do something, and the people who caused all those problems are turning to the attacks they know best, aided by the so-called candidate of civility. Mitchell isn't civil in my opinion.

  26. Joe:

How does the number of signers who are qualified voters compare to those who signed the petition thatwas done by Bob Caldwell when Barrie got Loweasel Smith and the Comegys council (Smith, Bubba abd Shanie) to increase the property tax rate?

  30. During the campaign, I was standing behind Laura Mitchell and her husband while Mitchell was sucking up to Cohen and Campbell. She said, "Louise Smith has got to go!" This was before Weezy declared she wasn't running again.

She was doing the same thing Louise Smith did when she ran, bashing the Dunn crowd, sucking up to honest council members to look aligned and get votes from their coattails.

I suppose I should have said something before. Then maybe not so many people would have voted for Mitchell. After hearing that load of suck up, I did not vote for Mitchell.

Mitchell has been out to get those two all along. Her innocent act does not fool me. She has given her true self away many times since. She must think we are all stupid.

  31. Love the whiner about the city manager form of government, LOL! This is a "HALF" step? How do you figure that one? There's what, 7, 8, 9 or whatever department heads? This changes ONE.

With math like that, I know I want someone like the whiner doing something for the city.

    ReplyDelete
  32. 10:26-

Let's hope that this outcome will ultimately result in going to the City Manager form, With mayors like Barrie and Jim-beau, that ought to be enough to prove that the change is needed and long overdue. It has been recommended by two charter review committees.

  33. It is over, it is done, now lets get on with council business. No excuses - turn yourselves from a "do nothing" council to a "accomplished a lot". The council needs to stop pointing fingers and blaming everyone else for the council problems.

Great news about the 2012 July 4th fireworks. Thank you anonymous person for the $10,000 donation. I will be volunteering as I hope many of you will do.

I agree. If someone would initiate a recall petition for Jim Ireton I will work just as hard as I did to help Jim get elected. The best way to take care of a mistake is to correct it.

  35. 2.7 TIMES more voters signed the petition that voted for Terry Cohen in the last election.

The people of Salisbury don't like their charter being changed in 15 minutes with no public input.

  37. 7:09 I agree that Giant is now off my list also and down to Food Lion but I don't know what Sage is?
I need two sets of tires next week. Were any of the tire places on the list?

  38. 10:26. That would be 3 charter review committees. Don't forget the successful referendum to combine City and COunty Departments. But who wants to implement the law and the successful referendum. Its just the people speaking.

My My My ... a little personal about Terry Cohen there? You got more signatures than voted for Laura Mitchell, too...and Terry Cohen got more than she did. Don't forget, Mitchell got a number of her votes riding on the Cohen-Campbell coattails.

Still promoting the LIE that there was only 15 minutes of discussion and no public input?

Now we know how you got your signatures...and we wonder how many of them are valid.

    Let us know, Joe!

  42. Why do we even have charter review committees if what they recommend isn't followed through.

Sounds like Obama's super committee for deficit reduction. Stale mate after supposedly top economic advisors months of talk, do nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  43. With the troops they had out and what was at stake fot the good 'ol boys, if they couldn't pull of the signatures, the public has finally resisted the influence of these special interest groups. Thank goodness. More signatures than votes for Terry Cohen, I bet that if they were actually verified, even with the big push of the landlords, Tilghman, Dunn, Cathcart, et al, that the number is way less than Caldwell collected to take the double digit tax hike to referendum. Supporters of Jim and Laura's petition drive were very good at comparing apples to oranges, just as you are doing, plus flat out lying.

  44. I can't wait until the next election when Dunn tries to run and people get out their copies of hte Camden meeting audio, the You Tube clip of "we're this close" (the old mall TIF), the budget where he and his cronies wouldn't fund the promised police raises, and the "on time and under budget" waste water treatment plant. Maybe Laura will run for Mayor. That would be fun too. She already has a horrible political record of broken promises. So much for little miss civility. Not much civil about breaking promises and going back on your word.

If Debbie had led a petition drive, you would have been screaming bloody murder. If you had been so upset by how a charter is changed, you would have been up in arms about the last one.

Does the change make sense? Yes.

Any of the rest of the debate is just political drivel.

Listening to the petitioners, I thought it was Congress debating the color of toilet seats in the bathrooms.

    Is this Jonathan or Laura?

Guess what? Your petition drive has been going on for a month now and the election was only one day. What was that day, about 12 hours or less? Not to mention all the free advertising from the Daily Rag. Don't forget about all the emails sent to the citizens and Neighborhood Associations by Jim and Laura. Guess what Jim and Laura, the people have spoken AGAIN!! The best thing Jim Ireton and Laura Mitchell can do for the citizens of Salisbury is to resign from their positions. You two are not wanted. Go Away!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. How many of you complaining on here actually voted in the last two elections? How many of you understand or have even read the charter? I voted and I have read, (not sure if I have the right understanding of every part of it) so I have earned the right to belly ache. I hope the Mayor and Council can now find some common ground and spend their time working on the betterment of Salisbury.

The complaints I read on SBYNEWS about gangs and homeless downtown keeps me away from that area. I would like to see Mayor and Council find a solution to this problem.

  48. thank God it failed. Poor Laura. What a loser she is. The democrats really know how to use everyone.

  49. 7:06 suggests that the names of those who signed the petition be published so that people would know who "the enemies are among us." I signed the pledge. I'm not an "enemy." I don't even know if I agreed with the premise of the petition, but I agreed that the change was serious enough that the matter should be put to referendum for voters to decide.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Now, the loser is on the news saying that she will ask council to take it to referendum anyway. You have to be kidding. Laura you rae a sore loser and a liar politician. You give politics a bad name, and Ireton too. You lost. You had weeks and an army of old hack politicians and landlords helping you. You still couldn't get enough signatures. Do ua all a favor and quit now. I voted for you and wish I had my vote back.

I also signed the petition and I am as conservative Republican as you can get. I don't really have a problem with the change but charter changes should be a referendum vote.

    ReplyDelete
  53. the petition was a very conservative initiative. it wanted to preserve the staus quo, it wanted to maintain checks & balances between arms of the city government and it wanted the people to have a say in how they are governed (i.e. the referrendum). it's interesting that an uber-liberal like Ireton wanted it in the first place & that another liberal like Mitchell hawked it since it actually is a very conservative stance. that's why I signed it too and don't mind to be on your "enemy list".

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yeah, let's start an enemies list, J. Edgar. You people are nuts!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Check mate. Game over. Now it's time to get back to work on the city's business, mayor and council member. What you were elected to do. You can't win'um all, grow up.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I'm as citizen participation as it comes, but I don't think every charter amendment should be by referendum. If this was about our entire form of government or about hiking my taxes, that's one thing. But this was about one employee and who he reports to. From what I read, the council followed state law. We elected this people so let them do their jobs. The change actually makes a lot of sense anyway.
