Rhode Island Atheist Student, School Clash Over Prayer Mural Lawsuit

A 16-year-old atheist said Thursday she is confident the law is on her side in her fight over a prayer mural that she wants removed from the auditorium of her high school.

Jessica Ahlquist said her side is "very strong" after attorneys for her and the city of Cranston made their case to Senior Judge Ronald R. Lagueux in U.S. District Court in Providence. Ahlquist believes the mural should be taken down.

  2. My first question to her would be, do you handle money and go to the mall shopping because it has "In God We Trust" on it! I think this is a load of BS. I am not religious, not certain I want to put a title of athiest on my lack of belief, but if you want a manger scene in your yard, a mural on the school wall, to say a prayer before a game...have at it. If it doesn't include your belief then do what you need to do to follow the religion you believe in. The nation is supposed to have religious freedom, and like it or not even if there is to be division of church and state, the two will impinge on each other sooner or later. Nowhere during my schooling did I learn that the beliefs and icons of one group had to be hidden from the view of those who's belief's differed. This political correctnedd and over reaction to art and icons, some of which has been around for hundreds of years, is rediculous. Just as I do not believe we should have to include any language other than English in any endeavor as an act of law, I do not feel that one person's or even group's disatisfaction with something deemed outside of their belief's should be a reason to attempt to remove or censor it in public.

  3. the prayer should remain. it's NOT against the law and it's definately a tradition and an important part of the school's history.

  4. Reading the prayer, it mentions no particular religion's god and in no way is a law that Congress made, which in the wording of the reference in the Constitution, "Congress shall make no law establishing..."

She has absolutely no case, and besides that, it's a beautiful prayer that every student in the world should strive to follow.
