Latino Students Withdraw From Alabama Schools After Immigration Law Goes Into Effect

Scores of immigrant families have withdrawn their children from Alabama public schools, according to state education officials, after a court ruling upheld the state’s new anti-immigration law.

The law, which was approved by the state legislature and is widely backed by voters, allows police to check for papers and detain undocumented residents without bail. It also mandates that public schools share with authorities the citizenship status of all newly enrolled students.

The law went into effect Thursday.

  5. In Huntsville, one of Alabama’s largest cities, 14 percent of Latino students did not show up for school on Thursday, and 8 percent were absent on Friday.

    So 6 percent came back?

Had the 6 percent taken off friday they could have had a four day weekend.

  6. the same law needs to be put into place in our area. will probably put Perdue out of business but will save tons of money for local schools, hospitals, social services, criminal prosecutions, etc. if they are illegal, they don't belong here.

  7. Hey 8:55. Your kidding right?
Maryland will send a delegation there to actively recruit them.

  8. It will be interesting to see the financial savings realized by the school system after just one year. If that is publicized many, many more states will jump on board.

  9. Should have that law here, but it won't happen, they would have to shut down Purdue!

    8:55 + 11:36:

Maryland harbors illegals + the more they have here the more Democrats get a vote.

With people like Mulkulski and others you will never have any laws preventing illegals here.

Allen Foods has the illegals and not Perdue. I worked for Allens for a number of years and they do not like cops nor cops driving thru the parking lots because of illegals working there. There is a Human Resource director at Harbeson Delaware that is so tight with the illegals there the illegals pay for his vacation.

  12. If people stopped using companies who hire illegals the problem will go away. So keep your eye on who your landscaping or construction company has working for them.

  13. 10:48 & 12:36 This won't be the reason Perdue folds...they've got bigger problems.....

It will be interesting to see the saving but not only in the school system but other things like food stamps and such. If their children can't go to school there they will move out of the state.
