U.S. Money Is Taliban's No. 2 Revenue Source

(CBS News)

It's no secret that war is expensive, but a report out Wednesday says the U.S. has wasted billions in Iraq and Afghanistan. More tax dollars will go down the drain unless the government makes big changes.

CBS News correspondent David Martin reports that in ten years of war, the U.S. has paid contractors $206 billion to do everything from building schools to guarding diplomats. Today, a blue ribbon commission put a number on how much has been lost not to violence but to mismanagement and corruption.

Commission on Wartime Contracting Chairman Christopher Shays says: "We are wasting between $30 and $60 billion during the course of our engagements in Iraq and Afghanistan."

  1. The corruption and waste has made a number of Americans very wealthy. I am much more interested in who those people are, than some nebulous claim about the boogey man.

  2. This country needs to stop pouring 'Billions' of aide into foriegn countries which seem to allways end up in the pockets of a chosen few. We have millons in this country who need housing, food, clothing and medical treatment.
That $40-$60 billion would have done wonders for the poor of Appalacia, many of whom do not to this day have indoor plumbing. Not to forget those in our major cities or other rual places. Billions wasted on countries which do not even like this country. We need to take care of our 'American Family' at home before helping others who do not even seem to want to help themselves! Have not these idiots in Washington ever heard the phrase 'Charity begins at home'.
