Salisbury Police Standoff On Washington Street, Possible Hostage: UPDATE

Salisbury News heard there may have been an emotional subject in the background as Police are trying to talk the suspect out of the home. In the mean time they are barricaded inside and the Police have the house surrounded.

UPDATE: They are evacuating everyone right now. They have tried to make contact with him. They are thinking something might be wrong. I think once everyone is out they are sending in the swat team.

UPDATE#2 We are on the scene and have the following for an update. There was ONE shot fired outside as the man and a woman got into an argument. The man pulled a hand gun and fired one shot. It did not hit the woman and she fled the scene.

There were TWO people inside the home when the man fled inside but he did allow the two people to leave the home. We are told there are no more people besides the suspect in the home.

SPD has around 20 Officers on the scene, including a negotiation team to talk the man out of the home. There are literally hundreds of people standing around as they have blocked off and evacuated several families from the surrounding homes.

At this point its a matter of talking the man out of the home and retrieving the gun.

Update #3: The Wicomico County Sheriff's Office is also on the scene. We asked why Prince Street School wasn't under lockdown but we've not been able to get an answer. To our knowledge, even though a shot was fired one block away from the School, it wasn't locked down.

A Mrs. Donaway just arrived and is being escorted by officers on the scene to the home. We believe she knows the suspect and is being asked to help in their negotiations. While all Officers on the scene are wearing vests, yet Mrs. Donaway is walking towards the home without one.

UPDATE #4: Salisbury News has confirmed the Salisbury Police Department DID contact the Board of Education to make them aware of what was going on. They could NOT confirm what the WBOE did with Prince Street School.

UPDATE #5: Police have NOT been able to make contact with the suspect. They have been able to throw in a negotiation phone after numerous attempts to ring the house phone but again, the suspect refuses to answer either phone.

We're told the suspect was drinking earlier today and law enforcement is doing everything they can to block off any view to the home he is in. "There's a ton of equipment being set up at this time," said one officer. Their goal is to end this peacefully without anyone getting hurt. Its a waiting game at this point.

For all we know the suspect could be passed out.

UPDATE 6: Very loud blast just heard coming from the location

FINAL UPDATE: Suspect has surrendered and is now being transported to the Salisbury Police Department. The large blast was a tactical grenade used to assure no one else is in the home after the suspect was removed. SPD is now trying to get a search warrant to go into the home and search for more evidence.

Great work performed by law enforcement, everyone will go home safe this evening.

It is not for you to understand. You only need to respect the First Amendment rights of others. While some of the comments on this blog a juvenile, racists, ignorant and just plain dumb, everyone has a right to express themselves and sometimes they are pretty funny.

  11. Thanks for the updates. I live within 200 yards of the crime scene and I'm glad I'm "in the know" right now. This is pretty scary.

  12. Schools go on lockdown for events far less serious than this one. What happened to the Prince Street administration?

    1. My son goes to prince street. They were on lockdown, trust me. My 6 year old came home crying about having to hide under the teacher's desk. Get your facts straight before you sound off.

  15. Something like this happened before with Emerson W. Kirk on Hanover St. Officers had to extract him at gunpoint from the house, and they did find illegal drugs and firearms. Nothing ever happened, and no charges were filed against Emerson or any other occupants of the house because Emerson's stepdad (Ernest Cornbrooks) is a well known lawyer in the Salisbury area. He is also friends with a bunch of Salisbury police officers, so they don't do their jobs or file charges with his piece of s#$% stepson. I know for a fact Emerson has never been charged when he was drunk and committing violent crimes in the past because of this. Salisbury, good luck getting crime under control when your police department won't do their jobs if any of its officers know the person.

  16. Do any of you even know what 'lockdown' means to a school and why it used in some and not other situations? There's only one door unlocked to the public in that school, and in 15 seconds it can be locked. Like most schools, it's on virtual 'lockdown' all day already. Meanwhile, the suspect is surrounded by 20+ officers. What would you have the school do?

Sheesh! Some people aren't happy unless they're complaining.

  18. why lock the school down when all the kids are standing outside within feet of the crime scene tape?

  19. I'm married to one of the officers there. How about a little less talk about it being a good time to potentially commit a crime now. Reality check... It isn't every officer or an entire squad. Multiple officers from multiple units within the department work these situations. The are plenty of on duty officers patrolling the remainder of the city. How about some talk about hoping for a peaceful outcome with no harm to a single officer. I'd love to see some positive talk about Salisbury officers and a lot less complaints. I can be certain that not a single person that speaks rudely of the police is married to, a sibling of, a parent of, or related to an officer. How about a single comment of gratitude for the officers and what they do.

  20. LET ME CHIME IN ON THE COMMENTS AND ANSWER SOME QUESTIONS.

First of all there were a LOT of children on the scene soon after the gun shot was fired. IMHO, they had NOT cleared the area and there was a LOT of confusion at the scene while officers were trying to concentrate on a serious situation and kids were actually trying to walk past and or down the street. I saw it with my own eyes. Now, I can say they have the entire area cleared out right now and the school should have done something to make sure the hundreds of people standing there watching what was going on were held back. It was simply bad timing.

As for those jackasses claiming crime should be done elsewhere, get real! They have plenty of other officers around the shore helping out.

I know this is coming through under the contributor name, we're LIVE on the scene using a laptop to keep every one updated. However, it's me, Joe Albero

  21. Darn right. They should be commended...who else would take a job with the potential for getting shot at for such little money. I don't think anybody on here has or is wishing for a negative outcome for anyone involved.

  22. just shoot the bastard and go on about your business. da there is no crime in the bury.haha what a joke.

  23. Joe is starting to sound like Geraldo Rivera!

  24. I live a few houses down from the crime scene and yes this is very scary. The officers on the scene have done a great job with making sure those who live close by were evacuated for safety. I pray that this all ends peacefully for all those involved.

  25. Re:7:02--Amen! Most police officers are decent human beings and deserve our support. They also deserve to be paid a much higher salary for the risks they incur daily. We can only hope that the perpetrator in this situation gets some much-needed therapy.

When schools are on lockdown, it's not just a matter of locking the doors. Students are not allowed to leave their classrooms, much less the school building. Kids were in the vicinity on the street when they shouldn't have been.

  33. The only complaint I have to make on the hostage situation is from our home at the corner of the 300 block of Washington St. We observed as a lot of people did that when school let out students were walking down the 400 Block of Washington St. that could have easily been targets and for a very long time traffic continued to flow right past the house in question. The closest neighbors to that house were thankful they were evacuated and we are all thankful that it was resolved with no one being hurt. The first shots were fired at 9:30 AM it was a very long trying day for all. God trully blessed us.

  35. It's quite relative for people in todays era to criticize a noble human being's GREAT effort to uphold the law ,peace and justice, even if that noble human being guards that duty with his or her very own life... I on the other hand, take a stand against popular opinion and thank every police officer, operator, personel and person that provided yet another safe day for my household, loved ones and the entire Salisbury area for that matter... We truly are blessed... THANKS FOR THE GREAT JOB!!!
