NEW YORK – The chief of the New York Police Department says city police could take down a plane if necessary.
Commissioner Ray Kelly tells CBS' "60 Minutes" that after the Sept. 11 attacks, he decided the city couldn't rely on the federal government alone. He set about creating the NYPD's own counter-terrorism unit. He says the department is prepared for multiple scenarios and could even take down a plane.
Kelly didn't divulge details but said "obviously this would be in a very extreme situation."

WOW! Citizens of New York aren't even allowed to carry a handgun. But HE has anti-aircraft weapons? And HE gets to decide when an aircraft gets "shot down"? WHO gave him anti-aircraft weapons? The Taliban? Now, we have an American city developing a stand alone army, with spies in OTHER COUNTRIES? And would he be responsible for the deaths on the ground (AMERICAN deaths, and innocent ones, I might add) from fallin debris, or would he claim THOSE deaths as "necessary, but unfortunate", and then go on TV proclaiming HIMSELF as a hero? So, if say, Salisbury, MD, bought a few Stinger missiles the Feds would have no problem letting Jim Ireton decide to shoot down an aircraft? This is unreal.
