Business leaders told support for hike dwindles as election nears
If Maryland is to raise significant new revenue to meet its backlog of transportation needs — most likely through a higher gas tax — 2012 is the year it must be done, a leading lawmaker told a gathering of Baltimore business leaders Monday.Speaking at the Greater Baltimore Committee's annual transportation summit, state Senate Majority Leader Rob Garagiola warned that any political will to raise money for highways, transit and other transportation needs will dwindle as legislators approach the 2014 state elections.
"They're going to be even more skittish as we get to 2013 and 2014," the Montgomery County Democrat said.

Excellent, 2012 is the year i'm going ELECTRIC....oh yea, no more gas tax for me AND it's solar and wind powered electric so take that Governments and BP and Shell and Exxon. Who's gotta right to FREE travel, i do, i do.
ReplyDeleteYour an idiot Anon 10:55 AM...
ReplyDeleteYou don't nor will you ever have freedom to travel...
First you have tolls... soon they will make policy that charges you for miles driven on the road way... (Yes even electric still drives on the road way) Not to mention when your cell dies and has to be replaced and cost more than the car itself, what then?
Oh also you need a charging station, which cost money... Solar powered cars cannot make enough energy to move a car unless you have it charged already which the sun won't be able to do specially in the time frame you need...
And to burst your bubble, there are no solar powered cars, there are only battery or a sort of electric car or hybrid, there have yet to be a fully electric car... There are however, solar panels on cars to help cool and heat the car... this doesn't charge the car, and if it does, it won't be but to get you 5 to 10 miles of working time... which is why ALL cars are HYBRID...
Electric/hybrid cars will be electronically monitored to calculate a road tax based on mileage. The gov't will also use this to track peoples movements. And if we are ever attacked with a nuke causing an electromagnetic pulse, all of the vehicles with any electronic systems will be useless. I keep an old diesel vehicle just in case. If you want to travel free then start walking or steal a bicycle.
ReplyDeleteMaryland is in competition with New Jersey to see which state can have the highest taxes in the union.
ReplyDeleteSounds like I'll be buying my gas in DE right next to the Liquor store.....
ReplyDeleteHey, 11:14, thanks for the name calling. I'll attempt to address your points below.
ReplyDelete1. tolls-i don't travel far and haven't payed a toll in over 10 years.
2. i already own my electric traveler and it contains no monitoring of mileage device.
3. i use three 18Volt solar panels to CHARGE with and a vertical windmill as reserve or for night charges. The windmill is still in prototype stages but seems VERY promising especially during windy months.
4. my traveler does not require license, insurance or registration. True it's pretty slow (35mph) but free and i don't travel far or carry much when i do travel. My main goal is not speed but freedom and green technology.
5. i'm pretty good with li-ons and chargers so i can get maybe 3000 charges or so out of my array (up to 40 charges so far) and rebuild the array with laptop replacement batteries for less then $150.
6. i can also power my laptop, lcd tv and charge my phone with my traveler if needed. like when the power goes out for two days.
7. right to travel, i'm not good at the legal stuff (who is, i guess) but here - In the U.S., the right to travel is derived from the synthesis of several rights. This was quite well laid out in Kent v. Dulles, 357 U.S. 116 (1958) at 125-126.
There's also common law and magna carta law that recognizes that humans have the right to move about the land freely.
Well lucky you Mr. Ireton!
