Welcome To The New Downtown Plaza In Salisbury

Between the homeless taking up all of the tables and chairs in front of WMDT and others sleeping on benches, 5 Police Officers on bikes rode right past this guy completely blind to what's going on.

Mind you, they were probably headed to the City Park for National Night Out but come on, really. Is this what's to come?

  2. I know this guy , he's got 6 kids and plenty of money from the government. Must be just taking a nap or waiting for the bank to open. Nice kicks!

  3. They will be more and more people like this as time goes by.

  4. At least someone is using the Plaza. Bet they won't let him sleep there during the 3rd Friday.

  5. Not that I agree or think that it's appropriate for the plaza, but he is not breaking any law. Look at his jeans and sneakers he is clearly not homeless.

  6. He's waiting for the back to school rally. When school starts he will be getting free breakfast and lunch at our expense

  7. And you wonder why business is not rushing to locate themselves in the plaza.

  8. Why should the City Police do anything sensible? The Wicomico County Sheriff Department say they don't enforce the Disturbing The Peace Law. But yet the Police want respect from the Public. That's a joke. When they earn it they will get it.

  9. Mayor Jim - what you gonna do about it? And you think people want to go downtown and do anything with this crap going on along with all the trash? Sure.

  10. Joe, why didn't you show some community spirit & wake him & tell him to move on?

Where should he move on to?

Is it now illegal to EXIST?

    Where should he EXIST?

What, you don't like SEEING him?

  12. If you want to see true vagrants, visit any of OC's Bus Terminals. There is one regular that lives there who, during the 100 degree heat spell, wore a zippered, hooded, jacket. His luggage is a 13 gal and a 40 gal trash bag.

The guy in the photo looks like a Saudi prince in comparison.

  13. The law he is breaking is Loitering, and more than likely pandering. Plus if he has no money or means of support he can be arrested for vagrancy. These laws are still valid and enforceable, there is no need to see bums on the street, and the cops can lock them up and clean them up and transport them to another city. When I was a cop, we would bus them to another state and they would become someone else’s problem. Salisbury Police need to ship them all to lower Virginia and they would blend right in with the rest of the people that live there.

  14. The library is inundated with people like this. And mostly all of them are using the computers or loitering in front of the building. And breaking the law by smoking.

  15. I don't care if 100 officers on bikes rode by this guy. Unless there's a law against laying down on a public bench, there's nothing that the police can do.

Day in and day out I watch as both commentors and bloggers launch random attacks on strangers that they know nothing about. More intersting is the fact that these bloggers and commentors are the same people that piss and moan about Salisbury being a dump, blighted, and crime infested. Newsflahs- a city is made up of it's citizens and quite frankly, Salisbury Citizens are narrow minded, racist, self-serving, hypocritical, ibisiles that want change without having to lift a finger. This young man may not be Salisbury's model citizen but neither are any of you. Finding comfort in a communal bashing-fest of some stranger is pathetic and you all should be ashamed. You will go much farther by pulling a person up from a cliff than by stepping on their fingers one at a time until they fall to their dealth.

Complaining about Salisbury's problems online does nothing more than make noise and promote animosity. Salisbury is in a deep decline and this is why.

  16. Hey the guy had nice jeans and new tennis shoes,it appears. His t-shirt looked ok too. At least we are keeping our people clean and looking good when they stop for a nap. LOL His welfare check must have increased while my Social Security stays the same. Maybe I need some kids to take care of. Oops, too late .. for that...oh darn. that would have added lots of $$ to my federal check, huh!

  17. anonymous 11:28,

    Pot calls kettle black.

Look, hiding the fact that the homeless are spending their time on the Plaza IS something people should be aware of.

As the article mentioned, several of them sit in front of WMDT almost every single day begging people for money as they walk by. Mind you, they have never been a threat or agressive towards me and considering I spent many years in NYC and dealt with this every day, DOESN'T mean I moved here for the SAME THING!

    It IS news, period.

If you don't like what we provide, by all means, don't come back. You seem to dislike what Bloggers and Commenters have to say anyway, so since you seem to be an expert on this matter, do tell me, why do you return so regularly to read Posts and Comments?

Probably because you're someone we ALL know and you're just trying to make us sound like bad guys.

I have chairs in my building to place out front to relax and be a part of this community but this is exactly what I'm afraid will happen. They'l come out just as soon as the Mayor cleans things up.

Also, there will be other hard hitting local posts about Salisbury today. You better get off line before we give you a heart attack.

    not particularly no.

Is there a sign that says no loitering? And you are assuming he is pandering, how you came to that assumption I don't know.

there is no need to see bums on the street, and the cops can lock them up and clean them up and transport them to another city

Just push them off on somebody else eh? I doubt the cops have that much free time to nurse maid a 'bum' as you call him unless they get a call.

Salisbury Police need to ship them all to lower Virginia and they would blend right in with the rest of the people that live there.

I think he blends in with the population around here.

  23. I used to feel as many of you do, that "these people" are just bums who shouldn't be anywhere around us "decent folks" But have you been watching the news these days? Ten percent of our population are without jobs. Many have no place to go. What are they supposed to do? I really mean that: What ARE they supposed to do? Have an answer? If I were homeless, I would no doubt be seeking some sort of relief. So some of these "undesirables" go to the library. How dare they use those computers and read those magazines! They're just for us, not "them."
Back to the picture. I wouldn't pretend to presume that this man is homeless. He did what any of us would do--find a quiet spot and just rest. Yeah, he's using a bench, and all the hundreds who patronize the Plaza will have to walk by him. At least he ought to stay under the bridge with all the others of his ilk.
And, no, I'm not a bleeding-heart libral--just someone who cares.
