WASHINGTON - In the wake of Hurricane Irene, many people in the D.C. region may be looking for their insurance policies to see if they are covered for hurricanes.
Here are some tips that can help.
If there is damage to your home or business from Hurricane Irene, there are ways to make an insurance claim faster and easier.
Standard homeowners insurance will cover wind damage but not flooding. Homeowners need to have flood insurance for that.
If filing a claim, make sure to provide your insurance agent a good description of the damage.
"Take pictures, make lists," says Jeanne Salvatore from the Insurance Information Institute. "if you have a home inventory, now's a good time to take it out. That's a list of all of your personal possessions."
