Rock Hall – Council Won’t Rush Decision on Prayer

ROCK HALL, MD – Mayor Robert Willis says that the Town Council will not be rushed into any decision on whether council meetings will begin with Lord’s Prayer.  This controversy is in response to objections filed last month by town resident Gren Whitman.  Whitman argues that the prayer is sectarian, and therefore unconstitutional.

  1. I hate hearing the argument of "tradition". Racism was tradition. Women not voting, tradition. Segregation... tradition. Just because something is tradition does not mean that it is legal or constitutional. It matters NOT what the majority thinks/feels versus the minority... just as in civil rights and womens suffrage. Religious preference and respect is a clear constitutional violation.

It blows my mind that this is even up for debate. Only a SECULAR government can protect religious freedom.

IMHO people who don't get this are only trying to assert their religious perspective upon the rest of the population... clearly violating the constitution.

  2. Hey 4:55PM I hate to be the one to tell you this but our country was founded on biblical principles.
Separation of church and state was
for freedom of religion, not freedom from religion. So the government could not dictate that you had to go to the one church in England. This is what the downfall of our country is seeing happen right now. A world without God. They took prayer out of schools and everywhere else one idiot athiest objected. And now our country is going down the toilet.
Just saying go back and read your history books if you think we were not founded on biblical principles.

  3. Sorry guys, you are both wrong.

Our nation was not founded on secularism. As for your argument about tradition, it is obvious that you are modern-day Jacobite. The tradition argument that conservatives argue is from Edmund Burke. We do not advocate NEVER changing a tradition, but doing so slowly and thoughtfully. Therefore, slavery ended and women were given the vote.

Separation of church and state is a figment of a leftist's mind. Also, what is your evidence that taking prayer out of the schools caused the world to go to hell? What about a total lack of discipline? There are myriad reasons.

  4. thomas jefferson stated,"i tremble for my nation when i realize there is a just God".

i'm currently reading a great book titled, "the christian life and character of the civil institutions of the united states", by benjamin f. morris.

this is one of many books and publications that refute the "secular" founding fathers argument.

to 3:14, you're way off base. it's true taking prayer out of government schools isn't the only factor in our demise but it is certainly a major factor. another one would be the teaching of the "theory" of evolution. when young people are taught they come from slime and any other "theory" that man can divise to suit his needs a person tends to do whatever he feels like doing. since he was not created in the image of God and doesn't believe in the 10 commandments and the teachings of the Bible why behave, why aspire to do better, etc.

our culture has become so course and degraded because we have lost our spiritual compass.

pray for our nation to once again return to the God of abraham, isaac and jacob. to return to our loving God and be the great nation and people he wanted us to be. we aren't the first to go through this and i'm sure we won't be the last; but there is hope. pray.
