Joe ,
I'm hoping you can get the word out about a company. I am an independent contractor with fedex and they are requiring us to deliver packages tommorow during the hurricane. Despite a state of emergency and numerous evacuations, some companies just put profit over common sense.
My wife and son have already evacuated but I had to explain that daddy can't come because he has to work.
Thank you Joe, you are a true patriot and I'm a huge fan of your blog.
Plenty of people out of work will take your job if you don't want it.
ReplyDeleteits just a little rain! geez people. besides, some people need their life rafts delivered asap!
ReplyDeleteGood grief. This daddy has to deliver papers. Get over yourself.
ReplyDelete"We are mothers and fathers. And sons and daughters. Who every day go about our lives with duty, honor and pride. And neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night, nor the winds of change, nor a nation challenged, will stay us from the swift completion of our appointed rounds. Ever."

My paper deliverer can wait until after the storm and just deliver 2 days worth rather than risking life and limb to deliver in the wee hours of saturday night, sunday morning.
ReplyDeletePlease be safe.
This is just not true - I have a son that is a terminal manager - the "FedEx bosses" are very careful when they make the decision about the drivers. They do not want the trucks on the road with high winds - the trucks are top heavy. It will be a while before Irene gets to Maryland. Do Your Job!
ReplyDelete10:38 and 10:41, when all this is over, go back and re-read what you have written and then reflect on how foolish you sound. Best wishes, FedEx guy.
ReplyDeleteand you have to stop for gas....they are open
ReplyDeleteand you stop and get something to eat...they are open
and you might find a motel...they are open
i am at my job today and so are the drivers. if it gets to bad today, they will be called back in.(which it won't get bad until tomorrow)
the old saying is....women and children first
Welcome to the world of delivery/ transportation! My husband is a truck driver and he rarely (maybe 3 days in 17 yrs) gets off for weather related shut-downs/ emergencies. I do not always agree with it because my husbands life is worth more to me than the products he delivers, however the company doesn't feel the same way I do!
ReplyDeleteBest suggestion is go into another line of work because no matter the weather there is always products to be delivered whether to a home or to a store.
I am a veterinarian and not only will I be working Saturday, I will be working into Sunday too. I do not have the option to evacuate because I have a job to do. Count your blessings that your wife and son are safe.
ReplyDeleteHow do you think your wastewater, water, etc... are handled during hurricanes? How about police & fire? From the same people that "don't deserve" even a 1%hundred raise. Suck it up dad & do your job. It sets a good example for your kids.
ReplyDeletei'll be at the jail doing my job round the clock listening to all these sissy thugs and general scum of society cry about not being there for their loved ones. you're welcome everybody.
ReplyDeletethe hurricane hasnt even hit the carolinas yet. lets all calm down. if you've lived here any amount of time you know that all this hype and hysteria happens every time there is a hurricane/tropical storm. dr's offices being closed or closing early today is inexcusable and ridiculous. as for tomorrow, im sure final decisions will be made as the storm is tracked and we see if it will hit us or die out or change direction. being prepared is great but lets calm the hysteria please.
ReplyDeleteI do hope that anyone who has to work during the hurricane stays safe it is certainly not ideal working conditions. But to everyone griping like the prison guard above, there's no need for me to thank you this isn't China if you don't like your line of work get into another one!
ReplyDeleteDont blame anyone but yourself if your stupid enough to go out in 100mph wind,
ReplyDeleteIdiot.
So, you all are saying that he should put his life at risk for your amazon.com order? I don't think so.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I know, OC bus drivers have to drive in it.
ReplyDeleteto the fed ex driver, first of all if you live in md or del you have no reason to cry and complain. The storm will not blast us full force untill the afternoon.....get up tommorow morning put on your panties and skirt and go do your job like a MAN!!!!Tough job you have driving around delivering packages.I guess be glad your not a state trooper or gov employee who will put in many more long hours than you working to keep the public safe....Thats what i told my kids as i wont see them till long after the storm and im proud to be a part of that effort...
ReplyDeleteboo hoo! I run a non-essential retail store and we're open tomorrow until 2pm and not had a single employee complain about it!
ReplyDeletei think you guys are missing the point. We are under a State of Emergency which means the state has the right to declare all non essential vehicles (eg commercial veh) off the road if not evacuating. This storm is very powerful, it seems many are underestimating it. Make no mistake, people will lose their lives because of this storm. I agree with fed ex guy, if he wants to evacuate with his family, he should be able to.
ReplyDeleteI am on call tomorrow and Sunday. If the weather isn't bad and somebody needs my help, I'll be there! If the weather is horrible, but an EMS-type client needs my help, I'll be there! When they weather breaks on Sunday and customers need my help getting back up and running, I'll be there!
ReplyDeletePersonally, I like driving in extreme weather. The challenge is a welcome change to all the sunny, open road driving I do. And I like knowing that I have accomplished when others are scared and hunkered down.
But in the end, if you don't deliver my package due to the weather, I understand. I promise that I won't yell or scream at you. Nor will I say anything to FedEx that even hints that you should have been on the road. Coming by with my stuff Monday is fine with me. There's nothing wrong with prioritizing your personal safety.
Is UPS shutting down or are they delivering too? I know it's a letter but if FedEx is being singled out why not see if UPS is shut down. Just saying...
ReplyDeleteIf a company wants to remain open because they don't believe the weather will be that bad that's their prerogative but they should allow employees to decide if they want to work. If not enough want to in order to continue daily operations then oh well.
first of all the state of emergency you speak of has nothing to do with cars on the road. The state of emergency allows state goverments to ask for federal aid and activate the national guard, no one has been requested to be off the roads at this time. Once again folks if your going to take time to comment at least know the facts about what your saying.....

Another guard that is as bad, if not worse, than the prisoners.
i think you guys are missing the point. We are under a State of Emergency which means the state has the right to declare all non essential vehicles (eg commercial veh) off the road if not evacuating.
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely correct. And if something were to happen, he would get the ticket or be charged because HE IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE ON THE ROAD.
They call it a state of emergency for a reason.
And depending how far he has to go to deliver, he might not be able to get back home. The bridge will be closed if he crosses it to make delivery.
All you hero's out there just make me so proud. NOT!
FedEx is not the military. The drivers are not compelled to die in the line of duty.
ReplyDeleteStupidheads.. Since the report says it's going to be strong, and even if it's not gonna be fatal at all, every worker has rights to work in safe-guaranteed environment. That's the human rights and go off to China, commies...
ReplyDeleteWow do you realize what a wuss you sound like? Fedex is one of the best companies you can work for in this dumpy town and yer gonna complain? I wish they could know put this up so they can see what a wimp your being.
ReplyDeleteMay I simply say what a comfort to discover an individual who truly understands what they are discussing online.
