Dover -- The Department of Transportation (DelDOT) alerts all motorists that increased traffic can be expected on Delaware's major corridors beginning Friday, September 3, as Labor Day Weekend gets underway. DelDOT is prepared for the many motorists that will utilize its roads this weekend. Wherever motorists are headed, DelDOT crews will be on hand to assist and monitor traffic volumes throughout the state. In addition, DART First State is prepared for the weekend, readying the Beach Connection Route and Resort Transit Routes for multiple travelers headed to the beach for holiday getaways.
Peak travel times during the Labor Day weekend are expected to occur from noon until 8 p.m. on both Friday, September 2 and Monday, September 5. All construction projects underway will cease at noon on Friday, September 3, except in the event of an emergency. Construction will resume on Tuesday, September 6.
DelDOT's Transportation Management Center (TMC) monitors over 5,500 miles of state-maintained roads around the clock. TMC personnel will observe the state-wide road network and adjust traffic signals in response to increased congestion or incidents.
Motorists traveling southbound through Delaware have Route 1, Route 113 and Route 13 available to help them reach their destinations. Motorists who have E-ZPass will be able to maintain regular highway speed through the E-ZPass Highway Speed Lanes at I-95 Newark, Route 1-Biddle's Corner, and Route 1-Dover Toll Plazas.
In order to keep pace with the traditionally large southbound traffic volumes on Friday and northbound volumes on Sunday and Monday, extra toll takers will be manning the tollbooths at all three Delaware toll facilities throughout the weekend.
