Breaking News--Bachmann Wins Iowa Straw Poll, Cements Her Top-Tier Status in GOP Race

Rep. Michele Bachmann won the Iowa Straw Poll Saturday, affirming her status as a top-tier candidate in the Republican race to challenge President Obama in 2012.

Bachmann received 28 percent of the nearly 17,000 votes cast. Texas Rep. Ron Paul was close behind her with 27 percent. Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty came in a distant third with 13 percent of the vote, followed by former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum with 9 percent and businessman Herman Cain with 8 percent.

  3. The Iowa straw poll only dates back to 1979, and in its five prior installments it hasn’t been very predictive of the ultimate GOP nominee. George H.W. Bush won it the first time, but Ronald Reagan went on to win the party’s nomination. Pat Robertson dazzled everyone with a straw poll victory in 1987, but Bush was the eventual nominee. Bob Dole in 1995 and George W. Bush in 2000 both finished first (Dole tied with Phil Gramm, to be exact) and went on to be nominees. But Mitt Romney’s 2007 straw poll did him little good; Romney didn’t even go on to win Iowa.

  4. You are kidding. Cements Her Top-Tier Status? This was a fund raiser. You paid $30.00 to vote. Ron Paul was a virtual tie with her. Is Ron Paul cementing his status as a top tier candidate in the party.

  5. don't think she will win primary but she is very good. maybe perry/bachman. maybe not. both would probably get the tea party vote. perry leans a little more to the center than bachman. if it were just me i'd love it but i know the independents have to come into play here as well.....

  8. Ron Paul IS the only one who deserves a vote. He scares the hell out of the leaders of the military-industrial complex. You know, the one Eisenhower WARNED us against and the ones who keep dreaming up new "threats" to our freedom; new places we need to attack and send OUR children to die so they can keep the weapons machine cranking and get extremely rich in the process of swimming in the blood of millions.

  9. I like her! I think it will come down between her and Perry. Either way as long as Obama is gone I don't care.
