White House Prepares To Outline Steps On Gun Safety

Six months after Giffords shooting, activists press administration for a 'comprehensive background check system'

Six months after Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot, the White House is preparing to propose some new steps on gun safety, though they're likely to fall short of the bold measures activists would like to see.

Anti-gun groups have been disappointed to see no action so far from President Barack Obama, who supported tough gun control measures earlier in his career but fell largely silent upon becoming president. Some activists were using the opportunity of the six-month anniversary of the Giffords shooting on Friday to speak up.

Spokesman Jay Carney said that the new steps would be made public "in the near future." He didn't offer details, but people involved in talks at the Justice Department to craft the new measures said they expected to see something in the next several weeks. Whatever is proposed is not expected to involve legislation or take on major issues like banning assault weapons but could include executive action to strengthen the background check system or other steps.

  1. WE believe what this liar Obummer has to say? I am sure there will be new RULES that are not approved by Congress and therefore Unconstitutional yet the MEDIA or the Justice Department will turn a blind eye. WATCH IT HAPPEN!

  2. SAD & NOT FUNNY part of it all is that a criminal can get a gun and or automatic weapon FASTER than a non-criminal today. Just go to any major city or area and ask the right person and you can have a gun in your hands in less than a hour and a non-criminal has to jump through hoops and pay fees and wait & wait and maybe be shot and rob till they get there LEGAL gun...............LOL don't we just love our LAWS...

You are absolutely correct. Gun control laws are just feel good legislation. They have no real bite on crime. They just make it harder for normal citizens to comply.

Even citizens who did something stupid in their youth, dishonorable discharge for service, behind on child support, or any number of laws banning ownership will not stop them from having a gun to protect themselves.

You are just making them criminals. Law or no law, people will own guns to protect themselves and their family.

Hell, now the government are even buying weapons for criminals. Lawmakers just keep churning out laws, no matter how rediculous, to justify their existance.

And some of them are the biggest criminals we have, slightly above cops.

We need a clean sweep of laws and the ones making them. Just start over and find people with common sense to fill their positions.
