As the modern-day bikini turns 65 years old, TIME takes a look at its biggest moments throughout time
The unveiling of the newly named bikini was a spectacle that almost didn't happen. It seemed designer Louis Réard had a hard time finding a woman willing to model the skimpy suit. Luckily for him — and millions of beachgoers to come — a 19-year-old French showgirl by the name of Micheline Bernardini rose to the challenge. Introducing the small suit to the world on July 5, 1946, Bernardini strutted in the newspaper-printed, G-string bikini for a fashion event at the Piscine Molitor, a popular swimming pool in Paris. Unsurprisingly, the suit was a headline-making success and Bernardini received over 50,000 fan letters.

Thank you god for the bikini
ReplyDeleteThus began the long road to moral decline in the West as women everywhere began to lose the idea of feminine and self respect.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Micheline!
ReplyDeleteThat bikini has to much material compared to the bikini now. You could make 3 bikinis out of all that material. Do you notice as time comes by the less fabric is used but the price is steadily going up.
ReplyDeleteif there ever was e frenchman who deserved o Nobel prize this would be it !!
ReplyDeletePersonally for me, I love the vintage style from the 50s. Most bathing suits now leave little to the imagination.
