Secondhand Smoke Associated With Hearing Loss In Teens

Its not news that second-hand smoke can be dangerous—even deadly. Now add one more price nonsmokers pay for living around people who light up: According to a new study from New York University's Langone Medical Center, teens who are regularly exposed to second hand smoke are nearly twice as likely to have hearing loss as teens who live in smoke-free environments.

The study involved 1,533 non-smoking adolescents between the ages of 12 and 19 who underwent hearing tests to determine auditory acuity at both high- and low-frequencies. Researchers also measured the subjects' blood concentrations of cotinine — a byproduct of the neurotoxin nicotine that is often used as a biomarker of smoke exposure.

  1. That's because a smoker is probably a rocker, and a non smoker is more a classical fan. Noise levels in the home been tested for these studies? Probably not.
    Quit wasting tax dollars.

  2. Is it the smoke or their parents playing "Every rose has its thorn" at 100 decibels, while in a drunken stupor with a Marlboro hanging out of their mouth ?

  3. Quit studying stupid stuff like this with our tax dollars and we wouldn't need to raise the freakin' debt ceiling. Just let people live their own life. Like I always say, if your minding your own business you wouldn't have time to be minding mine... Kick Rocks.

  4. Gee if they keep studying they will some how find a link to the national debt and smoking too. Everything is blamed on smoking these days! Tire blow out on your car? It's because someone had nicotine on their hands and touched it... it didn't have anything to do with the substandard materials used. Computer quit working properly? It's because someone smoked around it....it didn't have anything to do with the half junk parts used. Abducted by aliens? It's because they are attracted to smokers..even if that is first hand second hand or even that now huge contributor third hand smoke.

Ugh...get the bleep outta here people before long everything is going to be the fault of smokers!!!
