Postal Service Targets 3,600 Offices For Closure

Postmaster to release list, propose shifting some functions to local stores

The U.S. Postal Service is expected to announce a plan Tuesday to close more than 3,600 post offices, mostly in small communities, to close a widening budget gap, according to published reports.

The list of proposed closures, amounting to about 11 percent of the total, will be made public Tuesday by Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe.

The selected locations were chosen because they get the "least amount of foot traffic and retail sales," according to The Wall Street Journal.

  1. How about they just start charging full rate for junk mail?

  2. It's easy to understand but hard to fix. When USPS was getting paid to delivery a First Class letter to nearly all mailboxes, charging a low rate to incrementally deliver that junk mail was pure profit. Now that there's no First Class mail for a mailbox, the carrier must deliver the junk mail at a fraction of what USPS used to get paid for making that stop. Their whole business model is wrong for the times and it will take a lot more than bandaid fixes to ever make them efficient again.
