Don't let the title OR the first few images fool you. There was an instant line for crabs but after 15 minutes there were no more than 4 people at a time waiting in line for crabs and just about no one in line for anything else.
I tried taking photos from all sorts of angles to make it look busy but in reality folks, it was a flop. The heat was so bad we finally said, that's it, we're leaving.
We did run into a few politicians and even though the Governor was supposed to show up, we were not going to sit around just to snap a picture of him.
The food, well, the watermelon was good. Cold too! Pepsi was there giving out free ice cold sodas and bottled water. The crabs were very small and quite frankly way over cooked. Salisbury News learned there was a new supplier for the crabs this year. So if anyone is interested in bidding them out for next year, now might be a good time to call the Crisfield Chamber of Commerce.
For $40.00 a head, I think I'll skip the non election years and sit in the a/c instead. If you missed the Tawes Festival this year you didn't miss much at all. They sold thousands less tickets this year than in years past. Between the heat, the economy and a non election year, the odds were simply against a good turn out.
Frank Kratovil must be running again, yea? Hadn't heard his name since November 2010.
ReplyDeletemusta got the crabs from fatboys
ReplyDeleteYou look like Father Guido Sarducci in that hat!
ReplyDeleteCrabs were small and light but seasoned good. The corn was the bomb. However I did have to stand in line for steamed clams and fish sandwch and fries. I heard alot of folks complainning that they were paying 40.00 and have to hurry cause they cut the time from 12 to 3:30 this year. Also I can tell you what I objected to the most was the arrangement of the tents. Way too far away from the food for alot of older people.
ReplyDeleteThat chick under the Onion Rings sign was HOT!!!
ReplyDelete4,200 tickets was the estimate of tickets sold at day's end.
ReplyDeleteWhoever sat on the planning committee for this years Crab Feast needs to hang their heads in shame and recuse themselves from next years event. There was nothing positive about the event this year. The crabs sucked, were poor in quality and many were ILLEGAL!! Crabs have to be 5 inches from point to point and most of them were not. the Department of Natural Resources police that were there should have confiscated them and fined someone.
ReplyDeleteThe heat is not a problem and never has been. It's always been extremely hot on third Wednesday in July. No big deal, we have always expected the heat.
The fact that it is not an election year wasn't an issue either. Last year it wasn't an election year and the place was packed.
The biggest problem I would surmise is the economy. Yes the economy and you can't blame this on Bush. You can blame this on Obama, O'Malley, Cardin and Norman Conway. Actually I take that back. I don't blame the economy on those clowns I blame the economy on you idiots that voted for those clowns. Yep, it's right under your nose and you are to stupid to see they are ruining this country. The latest rip off by the Democrats is the increased fees for the Bay Bridge. You think the economy on the Eastern Shore is bad now. You keep voting those Tax and Waste Democrats in office. I will guarantee you the Crab and Clam bake will be a flop during the election years as well.
They also went cheap on the mugs this year. This is the first time in 35 years they went from a classic mug to a cheap glass with advertisers on it.
The Chincoteague Seafood Festival was a flop in May and now the J. Millard Tawes Crab and Clam bake is a FLOP!! The members of the Crisfield Chamber of Commerce ought to be ashamed of themselves.
Less people, more food for GA.
ReplyDeleteSorry, G. A. wasn't there.
ReplyDeleteJoe
ReplyDeleteAre you loosing weight?
The fried fish was delicious!
ReplyDeleteI saw the big, fat, lazy slob from the other blog riding around on his little scooter. Don't those things have weight restrictions? I was looking for the sign that said "Caution Wide Load."
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed myself at this event and I thought the food was great.

Say what you want about him, but at least he is not big, fat and lazy like that other blogger. At least G.A. works and has a functional brain.
Yes, I have lost 26 pounds. I also shaved off my facial hair, (goatee). I figured since other Bloggers want to act and look just like me, better that I prove weight CAN come off and hopefully that will encourage some other Blogger to start shedding fat and making his life better. Lead by example, right.
ReplyDeleteSince there were some challenging comments I rejected earlier I'll simply say this.
For $40.00 times three, I'd rather take my friends and staff to The Old Mill where they have professional cooked crabs and air conditioning than deal with the baby crabs they served today.
Mind you, the food service in contracted out, (as I mentioned in the Post) and I'm confident things will change next year.
I do enjoy this event. It's NOT Crisfields fault it was so hot today.
I enjoyed seeing Frank Kratovil and his wonderful Family. We had a very nice talk and I truly wish him the best. Mike McDermott is always a treat to spend time with.
The funniest part of today was ALL of the people who didn't even know who I was. One of which was Jonathan Taylor. It was hilarious. We sat TWO tables away from the man and he had NO clue who I was. Mind you, he sat alone while his wife ran to get trays of food to feed the beast. In fact, he sat there for hours not moving an inch. At least one person I know, (make that two, including his wife) who actually got their moneys worth.
Here's the kicker. How does a guy on disability and ALL of the other luxuries like discounted housing afford to pay $120.00 to get in. Oh well, every one deserves a break.
Joe,
ReplyDeleteYou look Fabulous! Love the hat!
(^_^)
Anon 7:42 It would not surprise me if you ended up on a scooter as well.
ReplyDeleteThe funniest part of today was ALL of the people who didn't even know who I was
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that was you in the picture either.
6:55, you obviously can't tell a Jimmy from a Sook. There is no size limit on mature female crabs, just on Jimmies.
ReplyDeleteAnd check your calendar, 2010 was an election year, 2011 is not. Heat plus economy plus off year = slower Tawes. Next year will be better.
I liked the new glass. It held more beer.
ReplyDeleteNext year, the chamber is considering banning fat person ride around carts.
ReplyDeleteI meant $80.00 to get in, (for two).

ReplyDeleteWhich picture are you looking at?
Actually, the legal limit is 4.5" from point to point.
ReplyDelete6:55 you are 100% correct as to the four individuals who have caused the potential demise of the clam bake but shouldn't the senior senator from MD also be a contributor.
ReplyDeleteThe Hebron Savings Bank hospitality tent was awsome

The cute dark haired chick in the 7th picture down. I think her name tag said Paige? She was a hottie. It looked like she was hanging out with another hottie that could have been her sister.

Ok you idiot check your facts!
"In Maryland, the legal size for harvesting male crabs is 5 inches or more across; peelers, 3 inches across; and soft crabs, 3 and 1/2 inches across."
http://www.msa.md.gov/msa/mdmanual/01glance/html/symbols/crab.html
They weren't peelers and 9:56 PM they weren't Sooks!
