AFSCME to Charge Non-Members $360 Per Year

Earlier this week we ran a post explaining that state employee union would be able to charge non-members a “fee” for all of those great “services” the union provides.  It was estimated that the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) could receive a windfall of up to $4.7 million.

Julie Bycowicz reports in the Baltimore Sun that state employees who are covered by an AFSCME contract but are non-members will be charged $360 per year.  That’s money that will be deducted directly from employees’ paychecks.

That’s America!

  1. So, people didn't want to join a union and have to pay dues.

They pass a law that will charge you for being a non-member of said union.

What will they receive for that deduction from their paycheck?

  2. More union intimidation.

  3. Are they benefitting from the collective bargaining the union conducted? If so, they should be union members. If they are not union members - they should not be covered by the negotiated contract.

If I were a non-union member covered by this contract - I would ask to not be included in its beneficiary.....then the union has no right to any 'fee' for services...I don't know how easy this would be to enact or operate - but these folks are being charged for a service they did not intent to purchase....kinda like individuals that do not want to (but can afford to) buy health insurance....

  5. If this isn't a clear example of corruption and theft made legal by dumbocrats in bed with the unions, then I don't know of one.

  6. Upper management are not eligible to join the union such as supervisors and those who are above them. Yet, they receive ALL of the same benefits as the Union members! I have been contractual employee for the State for 5 years and am NOT eligible for anything. Yet I still have to pay the extra which is an automatic deduction from my paycheck for my pension. My last paycheck was $30.00 less than normal because OF the pension, while they got a raise! I still am thankful that I have a job but after 4 years of no raises, it would be nice to at least keep my current take home pay.

  7. Believe it or not, MD is supposed to be a "Right to Work" state, meaning no compulsory unit membership. Leave it to the Democrats to figure out how to steal union dues from non-union members.
Oh yeah, there is a exemption available on religious grounds but guess who gets to decide if you qualify....the union committee. And you have to give a like amount to an approved charity, documentation required of course. I hope a class action suit is filed.

  8. 7:34 - maybe it is supposed to be a 'right to work state'...but it is an 'at-will' state - meaning your boss can get rid of you simply cuz (s)he got up on the wrong side of the bed - and offer no explanation.....ask our former county auditor about 'right-to-work' vs 'at-will'...you'll get an earful!

  10. they claim over 85% of employees voted to have this passed.they mailed out postcards that i was told were misleading.they had two boxes to check which had seemly rewarding things but underneath in small print it stated if you check the box and vote youre also voting for this.i never recieved a post card to cast a vote.they also stated that votes not recieved or votes not casted were counted as a yes.how can they do that?they then released information that we could request the fee be lowered by a certain amount if we feel it violates our religious or political beliefs but i was informed two days befire the deadline which had to be submitted through mail in writing.which was impossible to make.they also say that you can waive the union fees if you donate that money to a non profit charity either way its stealing!people are getting weak and letting these govt thugs do as they please.o malley destroyed baltimore city now he will destroy the entire state and thats not going to take much because maryland was close to that point to begin with.
