Will Laura Mitchell Flip on Veto Override?

Appearing on Bill Reddish’s show this morning, Salisbury Mayor Jim Ireton intimated that one council member who supported the council’s budget may not support overriding his veto. Shanie Shields has already gone back on her word and voted against the consensus budget. Council member Terry Cohen? … Debbie Campbell? … Tim Spies? All highly unlikely. That leaves Laura Mitchell. Will she?

I sincerely hope not. IF she does, we should look on the positive side of that action. We will all have learned a great deal about the woman’s integrity (or lack thereof).

Let’s review a few things:

  • Mitchell, like Shields, stated in multiple budget sessions that there was nothing in this budget that she couldn’t (or wouldn’t) support.
  • On Monday evening Mitchell made a big show out of stating that she was supporting the council’s amended budget “for the employees”.

I wonder what she will say to those employees who will have furlough days re-instated IF she does not vote to override Ireton’s veto? I wonder what she would say to Salisbury crime victims who ask would ask how she voted to furlough police officers?

Starting at 3 PM today, we can learn a great deal. Is Laura Mitchell woman of her word or is she a political opportunist attempting to take advantage?

THIS POST IS “STICKY”. THERE WILL BE NEW POSTS BELOW UNTIL 3 PM.

  2. You know, so many people asked me AFTER Barrie Tilghman quit her job as Mayor, what will you do now Joe.

Well, while things continue to improve by Gary Comegys and Louise Smith stepping down, now we have another Mayor to challenge as well as another City Council Member.

If Laura does make such a move, well, she better have really thick skin because she's going to very quickly learn that we, nor the people that voted for her will stand for it and we/they will be very vocal for the next 4 years.

I can't wait for this afternoon's meeting to see what happens. Jim Ireton is sinking very quickly in quick sand. He's reaching out for Laura's hand but she CANNOT pull him out. Rather than letting go of Laura's hand, he's gripping harder and has now pulled her into the quick sand too and sinking.

Who will rescue them? Stay Tuned....

  3. I hope she doesn't go down with Ireton. However , it seems to me her background and lifestyle will dictate her future. I certainly hope she weighs all the issues.
Shanie is a absolute ignorant person , she makes decisions because of her dislike of the other 3 members.

  4. Or, is this all some sort of set up by Ireton to make Mitchell appear trustworthy as the prepare for the coming years?

  5. SHe and her buddy Jim just got what they wanted. Here picture is the top post and her importance is elevated. I think that is what they want more than anything.

  6. Why don't we wait until we see what actually happens, instead of speculating on what could happen?

  7. I spoke with Laura today. She is not about to flip on anything. She is a good person and will do right by the citizens of Salisbury.

  8. I hope she goes with Ireton

Even if she flips, thanks for the effort to keep her on course.

  10. Can't wait to see if Shanie shows and, if she does, her BS as SAPOA's puppet.

Hmmmm, I wondered about all this drama. I know Ireton is a drama queen and all, but this seemed over the top even for him.

I think she'll stick by her guns, maybe because that's just her or maybe to seem independent of Ireton. But he got his re-election campaign speech in, just like Obama saying now he'll run. Ireton got to trash Debbie Campbell and Terry Cohen just like Barrie Tilghman did.

Remind me never to be that man's friend. When I don't politically suit him on something or don't give him his way, he'll hold a press conference to knife me in the back!

  12. I don't know Laura Mitchell on a personal level. I am hoping she is a woman of integrity and stands by her decision. If she is truly for the employees, a bottle of Pepto Bismol will aid in relieving her heartburn. I also hope she is prepared for the rath of Jim Ireton to rain down on her as it has been with Terry and Debbie.

We all know Shanie is in SAPOA's pocket. Look how she railed against a $7.50 increase for her buddies. A whopping 62 and 1/2 cent per month increase. She spends more than that on the dollar menu at McDonalds.

  13. Mitchell won't flip. It would be political suicide. She has ambitions. That is clear. Otherwise, she would have been a good sport and voted for Campbell as VP after she herself didn't get it. She is also part of the Dem party machine here.

Maybe she's a woman of her word (but to whom?) and political opportunist trying to take advantage.

One thing Ireton forgets is Campbell and Cohen were doing the right thing by people before they were elected and after. There's something to trust there, no matter how he dumps on them.

    Not so, Ireton.

  14. While it would seem inconsistent with the mayor's level of political acumen, it could be he's baiting the council members, one against the other, hoping to find a weak link. If so, dear editor, your comments tend to foment that purpose.

I agree about the pic in this post -- why (it's not necessary).

  17. Mitchell had better flip. If she sticks with Campbell and Cohen she's got less integrity than they have.

Campbell and Cohen could have asked Urban Salisbury to cover them though it health insurance program.

Wait a minute. Urban Salisbury cut its insurance coverage four years ago to have enough money to help downtown.

Ireton said it best, Campbell & Cohen want to spend more on a snowblower than they do downtown.

Joe, you're a downtown property owner. Can't you understand they're sticking it to you?

What are you talking about? No one forced Laura to agree to the budget. Since she did, she should have stood by her word. In fact, she did just that.

The rest of your comment is gibberish. Urban Salisbury exists to help downtown. That makes the rest of your statement pretty foolish.

  19. The snow blower was an Ireton budget item, not council's. Check the budget documents. From the information that I can gather it also seems that Urban Salisbury provides insurance for its director through the city's plan. So 2:46 try a little Google fact check next time.

  20. That very insurance coverage for the director was in fact topic of former budget debates...about 2 or 3 years ago. he came to council pleading...
