Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office Cracking Down On Drunk Drivers

Wicomico County MD— July 4th celebrations often include cook-outs, picnics, boating, time spent with family and friends and, of course, fireworks. But for too many Americans, the nation’s annual celebration is filled with tragedy, as it is one of the deadliest holidays of the year when it comes to alcohol-impaired traffic fatalities.

That’s why the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office will be out in force during the Fourth of July holiday weekend, cracking down on impaired drivers with aggressive Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest enforcement.

Statistics gathered from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration over the past 25 years show that, on average, nearly half of all deadly traffic crashes over each year’s July 4th holiday involved some level of alcohol.

In fact, 410 people were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes nationally during the Fourth of July weekend in 2009. Of that number, 40 percent involved drivers with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 grams per deciliter or higher.

“The Fourth of July is a time most Americans spend celebrating with family and friends, but it is also one of the year’s deadliest times on our roadways. So we will be out in force cracking down on drunk driving. If you are caught driving impaired, you will be arrested,” said Sheriff Mike Lewis.

“We want people to be careful all weekend, but particularly at night,” said Sheriff Lewis “The rate of alcohol impairment among drivers involved in fatal crashes in 2009 was four times higher at night than during the day.”

  1. want to crack down on DDs? drag them out of their car and hang them right there. these DDs are simply a loaded gun in a crowd of people. if the aim is right, someone is going to die. take away the bullet and keep others safe!

  2. I admire the effort , however , it doesn't seem to do any good lately.
    No punishment for the crime.
Give them a fine and they pay it.
Take their license away and they drive anyway. On and on and on.
I would like to take the time to thank the lawyers and judges for the way we handle these issues now.
Come to the Westside , from Hebron to Nanticoke , bring along an extra ticket book. 99% of all these residents are drunks.
A good example and public knowledge is Ian Gray. I counted over 30 arrests or tickets in 24 months , he still drives.
Anyway , good luck with this , hope it does some good.

  3. These "Killers" need to be locked up, AND, made to pay a fee for their incarseration along with heavy fines and comunity service, cleaning up the trash along the roads and cutting the grass with a hand mower! I read over and over again the same names in the news getting ticketed and fined but no maditory jail time. 1st. offence, 30 days locked up period, no weekends, no favors granted. 2nd. offence 60 days, 3rd. 90 days 4th. offence 1 year in jail! Also these "Killers" need to be on a registered list and a special colored license plate on their car to worn people that this driver doesen't care if he kills you or a loved one, he or she justs want to have a good time! We need to actually want to stop these people, not like we have been doing with the slap on the wrist approach, of course, this won't happen cus most of the drunks are in the legislator or in other positions of power; like the past prosacuting attorney. He needed to be made an example of to show everyone that Maryland is not afraid to punish ANYONE that drinks and drives!

  4. THIS is a prime reason why we need DRUNK DRIVER REGISTRY and post all their information on there. Such as photo's / cars they drive/ license plates of cars. And they should be forced have breath machines put into their cars before they drive to check for levels.Press your LOCAL Officials for a DRUNK DRIVER REGISTRY before your loved one becomes a victim to these monster drunks.

  7. Gee, we sell cold beer at drive thru's, and wonder why there are drunk drivers. Legalize pot, tax the heck out of it, and all will be well.

  8. 30% of all accident victims flown in to Shock Trama have THC in there system. I don't believe that the legalization of pot is the answr either.

  10. 1:32pm, I can find multiple studies that show THC does not or barely at all impair driving.

THC is harmless, yet still illegal because people are unwilling to learnt he real facts about marijuana.

    PS, I dont smoke.
