Today's Survey Question

Will the new graphic warnings on cigarettes cut down on the number of people smoking?

  1. I doubt it. The ads really are scary looking and I believe it's a good idea; however, the toxins and chemicals in the cigarettes themselves are not going to change. They are going to be as addictive as ever and it's going to be hard for people to quit. Believe me I've seen it. My mom quit for a while but started back up, my dad has never stopped and can't, and my boyfriend is just like my dad. It's sad and infuriating at the same time.

  2. While their heart was in the right place, this has been a wasted initiative by gov. and an outright overreach. Dummies who continue to smoke at present know what they are getting themselves into. Deny young smokers and those younger than 60 access to gov. health subsidies, and allow insurers to charge them up. Then advertise these initiatives. Don't burden the cigarette makers.

  3. I can only hope. I watched my mother die from Lung Cancer and I wouldn't want anyone else to go through such an awful death.

  5. Of course not.

#1 - Every person, especially every smoking person, knows the risks of cigarette smoking. The potential risks have been shouted loud before most of today's smokers first got hooked.

#2 - As anyone who ever smoked knows, it's not the outside of the package that gets noticed, it's what's inside. Smokers sometimes read the package while standing around outside in forced isolation finishing a cigarette.

#3 - Government would be better off displaying pictures of the results of obesity on plus sized clothing; like the display on cigarette packs they would be aimed at the person who has already compromised their own health.

  6. No it wont change their mind..people say they cant stop..My mom always told me there was no such word as caint and it died in the corn field.
I never knew what it really meant until looking back. Anything IS possible according to how much you want it.

  7. 11:52 you must not be a smoker. I agree that some can quit but others cannot. There are actual chemicals in the cigarettes that make them actually addicted. You can sit back and talk but it sounds to me like you don't have a clue.

  8. If you haven't started smoking, you'll never see these warnings. Once you start and are hooked, it's too late to warn you. I supposed the Government really doesn't want an effective anti smoking campaign because it represents too much tax revenue.

  9. No. If they should work though, may be marijuana should have warnings also, since it is more toxic than tobacco.

  10. whoever told you that marijuana is more toxic that cigarettes is a liar. Cigarettes are chemically altered to be addictive and hurtful. Marijuana grows naturally and is not chemically altered in any way. Cigarettes are worse than marijuana heath-wise hands down.

  11. Probably not. I wish they would be taxed at say $5 per pack and I doubt that would slow anyone down. It seems a coffin is the only thing that stops a smoker.

  12. 11:52..I was a smoker!!!I got to thinking about my future and how it will cut my life short..I threw the pack out the window and that was that. That was 40 years ago.
Caint died in the corn field!

  13. 12:54 - you don't seem to understand people very well; MD has already raised taxes on cigarettes significantly. That action has significantly increased the revenues in lower tax rate neighboring states while lowering MD's and with little effect on smokers. The main reason there are fewer smokers in MD than before is death, not taxes.

  14. 12:41 Keep telling yourself that marijuana is not altered. I am sure the gangs (that you support with your money) would never spray it with anything harmful...

As a former smoker the ads will not help. The smoker will probably just tear the image off the pack.

  15. 3:38 what exactly is it that you think they spray it with? Oh and by the way they don't get my money thanks. However, you seem to be rather street savvy by talking as if they spray the weed with something. You're telling me something I have never knew. Do you know from experience? Is this this paranoid hearsay?

  17. Don't burden the cigarette makers

What?! Why not? They were sued for billions of dollars by different states and still make profits. They sell an unhealthy product which kills and you don't want to burden them?! lmao

You think obesity is a voluntary action?! You know nothing about anatomy or what can cause obesity.

Educate yourself. You are embarrassing yourself and don't even realize it.

And how do you come to that conclusion?

  23. @ 11:51, I like your #3! The health risks related to obestiy are larger than the health risks related to smoking; Yet, while the government has attempted to inform the public about the actual caloric intake most recently, people have been attaking smoking for years.
Yes, before someone accuses me of being a smoker, I will openly admit that I am. On the other side of that spectrum I have a healthy Body Mass Index, still exercise and I cook healthy foods like vegetables with every meal.
With that being said, the government needs to adopt a similar program that the USMC has; there were no additional state taxes on cigarettes when we lived on base BUT, they increased the prices of processed foods, freezer foods, and junk but decreased the prices of healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, milk, meats, and other foods that are can be prepared in a healthy way.
Lastly, I will not be concerned with the warnings on a pack of cigarettes until I go into the grocery store and see a warning label on bags of potato chips that says, "Warning: The consumption of this product may have an impact on your health."
Oh, lastly: Morbidly obese people--you may complain about my second hand smoke (that you can't even smell from twenty-five feet away) but when I watch you eat, I lose my appetite! 'Take that in your pipe and smoke it!'
