Republicans Say No to Tax Hikes, Look for Other Revenues, Benefits Reform

The debt ceiling debate has stalled over the issue of raising taxes, and the Senate minority leader and his chief whip said Sunday they aren't going to allow that to happen.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is headed to the White House on Monday to meet with President Obama after talks between Vice President Biden and congressional negotiators collapsed last week. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., is also meeting with the president, separately, earlier in the day.

Obama Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner has warned that Congress has until Aug. 2 to raise the debt limit or the U.S. risks defaulting on its loans.

"Throwing more tax revenue into the mix is simply not going to produce a desirable result, and it won't pass. I mean, putting aside the fact that Republicans don't like to raise taxes, Democrats don't like to either," McConnell told ABC's "This Week."

Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl said opposition to raising taxes doesn't mean that Republicans have refused to consider any new revenue. Kyl said Republicans have agreed to increase fees, for instance, but do not want to change the tax code.

  1. If they call it a fee instead of a tax, does it take less money from us? HELL NO!

And wheel and deal they will - in my estimation I'm not impressed with either one of the political parties, particularly, the Democrats.

But at the end of the day - you watch and see - the Republicans will cave-in and raise the debt ceiling.

How do I know this? Because the Republicans know that their own meal ticket comes from the 'Governmental Beast' and as sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west - the Republicans will vote to raise the debt ceiling - instead of cutting spending.

  6. people have selective memories in this the post Bush era new white trash nascar conservatism
the national dept under senile Aunty Reagan went from 33% of the GDP to over 50% after cutting taxes that he then had to raise again
he is single handidly responsible for the big government that we are strapped with now and the two elected republicans since him did nothing to change this they and their friends only benefited from insider big government contracting banking and waring and duping the new conservatives into thinking they were of the same class when in fact it had little to do with conservatism or patriotic traditional values etc. Just like Obama preyed on the naive with promises of change.....It is all the same old joke the pendulum swings and they all seek to further set us apart and divide the nation so they can loot and pillage the greatest loot on earth....our tax base......the rich are not evil just because they shelter their fortunes they got rich playing the game at hand
perhaps it is time for the middle class to stop paying too

  7. Anon 2221 -

OK John Maynard Keynes. Who controlled Congress during the Reagan era? Who controls spending? Of Reagan's stated goals as a candidate, and as President, which one was primary?

The Democrats (although the GOP did have marginal control over the Senate from 1981 - 1983). Congress controls spending. Reagan's primary goal was to end the march of Communism. Did it, didn't he?

You also neglect to mention that federal revenues grew dramatically under Reagan even though he dropped the top marginal rate from 70% to 30%.

Oh yeah, the 1986 Tax Reform Act simplified the tax code. It didn't raise taxes. Sure some people's taxes went up because deductions were eliminated. You know, those "fat cats" that you claim Reagan was so beholding to.

Don't speak unless you know what you are talking about.

  8. Don't speak unless you know what you are talking about.

That would reduce comments to a trickle if everyone did that.

  9. Doesn't anybody see that the math just doesn't add up. It's going to take big spending cuts and some tax increases to get us out of debt.

    You don't get it!
If you raise tax rates in this economy, tax revenues will go down!
If you logic is correct, rasing the tax rates to 100% will fix everything. Stupid!
