Popular Seafood Chain To Take Phillips' Spot

Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. To Move Into Baltimore's Harborplace

Shrimp kabobs, shrimp kreole, shrimp gumbo, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp ...
A restaurant spawned by the Academy Award-winning movie "Forrest Gump" is coming to Baltimore's Harborplace.
Harborplace officials announced Wednesday that Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. will take the place of Phillips Seafood Restaurant after it leaves its space at the popular Inner Harbor location.
The restaurant is expected to open in May 2012 and will offer tasty seafood in a casual family atmosphere.
"Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. is a great new restaurant and attraction for the Inner Harbor and Harborplace," said Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. "Today's announcement builds upon the recent additions of Lenny's Delicatessen, H&M and this summer’s opening of IT’SUGAR."
The restaurant brings to life the 1994 hit movie “Forrest Gump,” featuring down-home decor reminiscent of the movie’s Alabama setting. Film memorabilia and still photos will decorate the walls, along with reproductions of script pages, storyboards and costumes.

  1. maybe because even the Baltimorons figured out how much Phillips actually sucks...

  2. Shrimp is a good choice. After all, the Bay is dying and has killed off most of the crabs. I just bought a LB of lump for $10.99 that was caught in Vietnam and packed in Florida. The "local" version was about $18.

  3. Not good. A local restaurant with local seafood replaced by a chain retaurant with SYCO food.

Phillips has not used Maryland crab meat in years. I can't eat the "other" stuff so I have to ask where the crab meat comes from or it makes me sick. There are many local places that don't use local crab meat or seafood. Many will say "Maryland style" crab cakes but it's not Maryland crab.

  5. Try Kool Ice Crab Co. in Cambridge. The crab meat is great. And Suicide Bridge Rest. makes a great Kool Ice crab cake, though it's quite pricy.

  6. Good luck finding Maryland seafood at Phillips. Its mostly made in Asia.

  7. Phillips Crab House in OC has downsized their menu and eliminated many items such as, crab au gratin, crab norfolk, crab thermador and their eastern shore platter.

  8. According to WJZ, Phillips isn't leaving the harbor, they're simply moving from Harborplace to the Power Plant. They'll be taking over the space that ESPNZone used to occupy.

  9. Phillips By the Sea in Ocean City is no longer also. It's now a restaurant called Bombora's. The menu sounds great, though I haven't eaten there yet.
The Phillips' have not only used crabs raised, processed and packed in the Phillipines for years, they own the processing plants over there.

  10. 624-Having spent a summer working at Phillip's in OC, I can tell you that they use more sysco product than any other restaurant I ever worked at. Tractor trailer full load every month. Literally, everything on the buffet outside of the shrimp/crab came from sysco.

  11. The reason that alot of restaurants buy Asian crabmeat is because they are too cheap to buy the actual Maryland stuff. I know this from actual personal, hands-on experience. Anything to save a dollar.

  12. 813-Totally agree. Phillips, if ran by someone with more passion for the food, would be 10x bigger than it is today. Instead, it's a subpar place that only tourists go to once before realizing the dive it is.

  13. I haven't bought crabs in years. Recreational crabbers can harvest 2 bushels a day. We pick what we don't eat and pack our freezer with delicious Maryland crab. All this for a little gas for the john boat and the cost of chicken necks. Get outside people, enjoy your own backyard!
