McDermott Argues Against Toll Hike

Del. Mike McDermott (R-38B) has written a great op-ed in Sunday’s Daily Times (and which previously appeared in SbyNEWS).  Unlike those who simply parrot the arguments of the O’Malley administration or some who simply oppose any toll hike at all, McDermott makes a reasoned argument as to why the proposed hike is excessive and will harm our local / regional economy.

I encourage our readers to examine McDermott’s piece, not only for its arguments but as an example of McDermott’s thoughtfulness.  During his race for the 38-B House seat, many opponents attempted to portray McDermott as a “dumb cop” or some kind of hack.  Yet, as someone who was involved (albeit tangentially) with his campaign, I was constantly amazed at his thoughtfulness and intelligence.  I was particularly impressed by the fact that McDermott insisted on writing his own material (including positions on very complex issues) and even his own commercials (his radio ads were among the best that aired on the Lower Shore during last year’s election).

It’s important that our elected officials take thoughtful positions on issues which affect us; rather than marching lock-step with a political party, or pandering to the lowest common denominator.  I believe that McDermott is exhibiting that trait and we should be thankful for it.

  1. I don't think it was "many" who tried to portray Del McDermott as a "dumb cop" but just a handful of malcontents, who all put together haven't the brain capacity of an ant.
Del McDermott has done an impressive job in his first year. He's not only thoughtful, but stands his ground on what is important to his constituents. He also has gone above his duties in keeping us informed as opposed to keeping us in the dark like has been the practice previously.

  2. I think what impressed me about Mike is the fact that he came to MY front door and we had a great conversation while he was campaigning. He actively listened to my concerns and reassured me that things would be different if he was elected. He is the only politician that i KNOW who has actually been honest and up front! Great Job Mike!!!

  3. A politician who is up front is rare. Most will tell you what they think you want to hear whereas Mike will tell you the way it is. There is nothing fake or phoney about Del McDermott.

  4. YEA RIGHT we had a meeting set up with him and we waited close to 2 hours in his office and he never showed, never called or nothing to say he was on his way to office. After close to two hours his office lady came in and stated she was sorry but could not get him and escorted us out of his office and as she escorted us out another group came in to meet with him. After we was escorted DOWN away from his office we observed him going into his office and we tried to arrange anther meeting with this "hack" and neve got one , so that tells you his story ALL TALK AND NO WALK. We need to clean them all out of office and put regular working stiffs in there for next election.

  5. I must say I didn't know much about Mike, however his actions are doing the talking as far as I'm concerned. We are lucky to have him as a representative.

  6. Marc, could you tell us what concern you had wanted to discuss with Del McDermott?

  7. It was about some bill that was in line to be voted on and our family and legal advisors wanted to be heard on the matter, but it did not matter in the end as the bills died in house.
