A man who repeatedly raped and sexually abused his stepdaughter for 10 years in Berlin maintained his innocence last week in court, but entered a guilty plea because he acknowledged there was enough evidence against him.
Gregory Donzell Bailey Sr., 53, who now lives in Onancock, Va., entered an Alford plea to one charge of sex abuse of a minor-continuing course of conduct and two charges of incest during a hearing in Circuit Court in Snow Hill on June 2. An Alford plea is like a guilty plea in that the defendant accepts that there is enough evidence to find him guilty, but he maintains that he is innocent.
The remaining 15 charges against him were dismissed.
Bailey was accused of abusing and raping his stepdaughter from 1992 to 2003, beginning when she was 7 years old and only ending when she went away to college at the age of 17.
