Is It Even Worth Going Out To Eat Any More?

Over the weekend I asked my Wife, where would you like to eat tonight. She opened the phone book and started searching for a restaurant we hadn't been to yet and nothing seemed satisfying. To my amazement she said, how about Outback.

Some of our loyal readers will recall, the last time we went to Outback it was a complete disaster. I thought, well, it's been at least two years, why not. Talk about a huge mistake!

I wasn't that hungry so I decided to order a cheeseburger. I mean, how bad can you screw that up, right?

We were conveniently seated right next to the kitchen. You know, the seats where you walk out of a restaurant and your clothes not only stink, you can feel the grease in your clothes. I didn't complain about the seating because I thought I'd give them a fair chance. Yes, there was seating available elsewhere and I made sure NOT to wear clothing that had Salisbury News advertised all over it.

We were trying to hold a conversation but found it very difficult as a group of intoxicated people sat at the next booth talking Nascar. I can deal with that but the screaming infant that just wouldn't stop crying was starting to get on our nerves. Just as it got to the point of no return, our food finally arrived.

My Wife ordered the Alice's Spring Chicken, which is usually fail proof. Fortunately it was very good but I have to say, this is a meal that used to cost $7.49 in Outback and is now over $14.00 and the portion is about 1/2 of what they used to serve.

Then there was my burger. What used to come in an over sized bun and a 1/2 pound was clearly smaller, (bun wise) and about 1/3 of a pound of meat. I went to lift the top bun to see if they did in fact put mayo on it and the bun was as hard as a rock, seriously. I looked at the waitress and said, this bun is as hard as a rock. She replied, oh, you didn't want it toasted? My reply, did I ask for it toasted.

She then said, let me go get you another bun and left. While she was away I felt the bottom bun and it too was hard as a rock. When she returned with the top bun I told her the bottom one was hard as well and she said, let me get you another one. She returned with a small plate with the bun on it, expecting ME to use my hands to remove and replace the burger onto the new buns and scrape the lettuce and mayo from the other bun onto the new buns.

I'm sure many of you have had experiences whereas you weren't satisfied and they took the entire thing back to the kitchen and fixed it to your liking but this just wasn't the case at Outback. The burger had an unusual flavor to it and I had asked that they not put any seasoning on it. I can't exactly explain what it was but as I enjoy a good burger on the grill, this meat tasted nothing like the ground beef I'm used to.

We couldn't get the bill quick enough to b-line it out of there and quite frankly that will be the very last time I ever go back to Outback. Every one has bad experiences once in a while but Outback continues to fail to deliver, especially at the prices they're charging. My burger was around $10.00 and it sucked. We got home and immediately changed out of the greasy clothes we had on and agreed we'd never return.

  4. Thanks for visiting a LORA restaurant. The owners are there, fix the problems (If any), take care of their customers and take pride in everything they do. Sounds to me like you expected something different and got the same results... That's the deffinition of INSANITY JOE!!! Stick with LORA!!!! Problems solved and money stays on the shore...

  6. i love outback. their ribs are phenomenal! although the one in salisbury is NEVER consistant on cooking steaks (i always order medium well and it will come anywhere from mid rare to hard as a rock!) the one in west ocean city i've never had a problem at. ever.

    sorry your dinner sucked. :(

  7. I agree, the food is not worth the money. Haven't been there in over a year or so.

  9. That's the NEWLY approved meat by the FDA from the clone department... More than likely... or it was either old meat or some other animal...

Just wait till more of the genetic meats like cow and fish hit the market... what health risk will you then start seeing? oh not to mention the taste will be different so...

Good ole USA... Where your pockets take the hit-in and the govt will keep on bicker-in... Where the taxes are high, and the govt waits for you to die... Where the illegals are taking over, the govt says "tax hike" bend over...

  10. Aww. I worked there when it opened six years ago now and it was top notch. The management was great and the servers had excellent training. I've only been several times in the past two or so years and have noticed the steady decline as well. That's a shame.

  11. we ditched outback in favor of texas roadhouse
food and service are usually much better

  12. Georgia House has the best ribs around for my taste. And Salisbury Outback is surely hit or miss, but mostly miss for the money.

  13. went to Outback in Rehobeth for Mother's Day. That was the last time we will be in any Outback!! Food was nothing to write home about; definitely not worth the money!!

  17. Joe, again you hit the nail on the head. The wife and I went there several years ago.The first was good and reasonable. However our second visit later was a total disaster.Dirty seating, poor service, long wait time, and lame excuse from the floor manager for what we experienced! We paid and have not been back there again last 5 yrs. When I go to Outback now it is in Ocean City.

  18. I have to ask why would you order a burger at a Outback. I agree with the writer above Hardees has better burgers than most. Most reataurants have a theme and food
that they or known for. When I go
to a steakhouse I order steak, not chicken, fish, or anything else. When I visit a seafood restaurant I order seafood not a steak.

  20. we had consistently bad service and poorly cooked steaks at Outback in Salisbury. We finally gave up and I wouldnt eat there now even if it was free. The one in west oc usually gets it right but we dont go to that one much, usually Texas Roadhouse.

  25. Thursday $5 Burger Nite at Station 7. Without any prior knowledge, my wife and I decided to go to Station 7 in Pittsville last Thursday. The place was packed. And I'm not saying the burger was only $5 and everything else was extra. I mean the burger and fries were total $5. I couldn't believe it and plan to eat there oftern (on Thursday nights of course).

    ReplyDelete
  26. Have never had a bad meal at Outback and are always treated well. Maybe you hit a bad night.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The Old West steak house is pretty good, and it is not a chain. Why don't you try that next weekend?

  28. I have had a similar experience with the Red Lobster chain of restaurants. I've only been to Red Lobster twice and I will never go back to any Red Lobster chain of affiliates EVER!

First experience... long wait, lobster undercooked, long intermissions between wait staff to tend to our needs, waited 20 minutes for the check.

Last experience... my wife and I go in for an Anniversary Dinner... supposed to be "Special". We were told by the "Greeter" that there would be a wait... OK, we have waited before. We are waiting and waiting and waiting. During all my "Free Time" waiting I noticed many patrons not having to wait for available tables at all. I also noticed that these "Patrons" were ethnically compatible to the Greeter. Finally, after ONE HOUR of waiting for a table for two unethnically similar patrons, we were escorted to our table. My meal was not as I ordered it... I found, and almost broke a tooth on a tie clasp that was found in my salad. It was the worst dining experience in my life. I thought the first experience was bad, but brushed it off as piss poor management.

This "Last" experience was the worst experience I have ever experienced at a dining franchise.

I stay away from franchise restaurants as they really do not give a S*** about your dining experience.

Stick with a family restaurant or one that really cares that you leave with a pleasant taste in your mouth.... both cuisine wise and experience wise.

    RED LOBSTER SUCKS!!

  29. It ain't worth it. . .cook at home.

I get so depressed with the

    difference between what is

    ADVERTISED and what is DELIVERED.

    Like the movie "Falling Down"

"Can anybody tell me whats wrong

    with this picture?" - DFENS

*DFENS holds up a flattened burger*

*one little boy raises his hand,

    all adults just stare*

By the time we reach adulthood most

of us have had out expectations

    systematically lowered each year.

We learn to accept poor service as

"the way things are, can't be

    changed"

Rely on yourself. The only way.

  30. It's a shame there is really no place in Salisbury to eat that I would recommend to someone.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Joe your burger probably tasted funny because we recognized you when you came in. I made sure you had some "special sauce" on yours.

    Gotya!

  32. Just stay home and fix your own food.... Healthier, tastier, and cheaper.........We are being taken advantage of at the expense of our health, pocketbook and setting poor examples to future generations.

    ReplyDelete
  33. After seeing the 5:56 comment Joe should sue Outback.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yes, 6:18, because that comment definitely came from Outback. Call in the attorney right away! What a fish!

  36. JAIL BIRD WITH THE PRES...June 13, 2011 at 7:34 PM

    Hey Joe,

Obama, Reverend Wright and Al Sharpton said they loved Outback Steak House and said the food there is almost as good as the JAIL HOUSE FOOD they serve in PRISON!!!

  37. I've never liked Outback. There steaks have an unusual texture to them. I almost think they soak them in some sort of meat tenderizing liquid.

  38. The hostesses seat people in whichever sections of the restaurant that the servers are working in. If you go in at 5:00 and see an open table it may not necessarily be available because the server assigned to that section may not start their shift until 6:00. There's also a rotation that is done to make sure each server has a fair shot at making money. So the hostesses will seat you wherever a table is available for the next server who is "up". However if you request to sit at an "open" table in a particular spot the hostess should find a server to take care of you at that table. Also one of my favorite parts of their burgers is the toasted buns. Yum :) That being said all restaurants and servers have their off nights. However I've never had a bad experience there. But it is disappointing to pay money and not receive the food or experience you wanted.

  39. lmao! fine dining in salisbury?
would have better luck finding nemo! pizza and all you can eat buffets are not what an educated person would consider fine dining! all there is here are chains with the same ol crappy food!

  40. The president of LORA does have a place and it is air conditioned amd some of the best food anywhere. Dont knock it til you have tried it.

  41. I don't know why outback, redlobster and olive garden are always packed. I hate to say it, but people go to those retaurants because they do not know any better. All of those restaurants get their food supplies from SYSCO. Trust me I load the trucks. Its all the same, just fancied up on the plate different at each chain. If you want a great meal go to one of the local owned restaurants. Try Falstos Restaurante Antipasti in Ocean City. The best steak I have had out of 100s of places in this country and several countries. Excellent service, excellent food and the atmosphere is the best. Also Restaurant 213 in Fruitland is top notch as well.

  42. I also have given up on Salis Outback, and don't mind submitting my comment at all.

  43. Who can afford to go out and eat right now? If you want a good burger go buy a box of Steakum 1/3 lb burgers...$8.99 for a box of 6- and they taste as good if not better than the huge burgers you pay 8-10 bucks for in one of those places.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I normally do not eat out anymore as it just got to be so expensive and the quality of food does not live up to the price for what I can eat at home for. However, it is nice to go out on a "social" side and talk to other people while enjoying dinner out so try to balance it. I have had good luck at Backstreet Grill when I want something casual and Sobo's for more "sophisticated" dining. However, Sobo's can get a little pricey but they do run specials that make it more affordable than before.

  45. I would have to disagree on the whole LORA thing...I've been in a couple of those restuarants and sometimes they give a crap less....because they have no one to answer to..I work for a cooperate restuarant and when something is wrong...you best fix it or you have to answer to higher people...as for keeping money in the area...do you think the employees take a bus from baltimore to come here and work everyday??...your supporting local people so they have a job..hello???...Back to the issue at hand...your absolutely right Joe...that whole situation was handled wrong...you shouldn't have been expected to recreate your own burger...and for those that have love for Texas Roadhouse....thank you for your continued support...

  48. I saw someones facebook and they had a picture of a sandwich from Royal Farms in Seaford I think. It was burnt!

  49. I guess it's whatever you are used to. Golden Corral has good food and pretty cheap.

I don't go there a whole lot but when I do it's been pretty good.

How many of you complain to management if you have a problem? I do and they usually make it right. If they can't I get a discount or a free meal so they don't lose a customer.

If it's really terrible I don't return. Jimmy's grille is a good example of a bad diner.

  53. This is one more reason why I do not have employees anymore. Too risky in a business to have some people who really don't give a crap and they are just there to collect a paycheck.
