Ireton’s Interns

Did you know that Salisbury Mayor Jim Ireton has an intern? Well, he actually has 1 1/2 interns.

How can you have 1 1/2 interns? He shares one with councilwoman Laura Mitchell. In fact, sources in the Mayor’s office state that all of that “brilliant analysis” Mitchell was claiming credit for during the budget process was actually done by her intern.

There’s certainly nothing wrong with the Mayor having one or more interns. All he needs to do is call the Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement (PACE) over at SU. They’ll hook him right up.

What surprised me was that Mitchell received an intern. Sure, her husband is on the faculty and she knows people I’m sure. However, to “”share” an intern with the Mayor while also claiming to be totally independent of him doesn’t exactly ring true. Besides, I wonder if Ireton or Mitchell asked council members Debbie Campbell, Terry Cohen, Shanie Shields, or Tim Spies if any of them wanted an intern.

Shanie would have probably jumped at the chance. She probably would have used an intern to fetch drinks or change the channel while she watched her “progams” or hold her purse while she played the slots.

Well why don't you try to find out BEFORE you write your blog entries? Because you're not a journalist that's why. Answered my own question.

  10. The problem is not with these two having interns, it is that they share one. Also it is a little strange no one else on the council has an intern...If Ireton and Mitchell sahe the one intern thats very questionable.

  12. A little background? Everyone rashly offers speculation, useless commentary, kidding, snide comments... Only context kills speculation.

  13. Why shouldn't they share an intern? They are all part of City Govt! The fact that the editor of this blog (and many others) expects that the Mayor and Council members must explore issues independently is a symptom of what ails this City.

  15. What a bunch of silly gooses we have running the county. It seems all they can do is raise our taxes and distract us. Crime is still terrible, downtown salisbury still a money pit, the waste plant still lame, the rural still have no broadband, the poor still being evicted for not paying taxes, law abiding citizens still being shaken down with illegal tickets. It's like watching a 5th grade group of bullies run the county. Amusing and sad at the same time.

  16. Either council member can offer an internship to a college student. Have either of you found out if they went out of their way to do so? Ireton and Mitchell obviously did. Why can't the other council members set up the opportunity?

  17. My guess is that those interns are basically liberal buffoons who know nothing of value.

PACE is a congeries of fellow-travelers.

This isn't government. It's romper room.

  19. Mitchell independent of Ireton?

    Hilarious!

  20. 4:37: Please enlighten me. What does your last sentence mean? 'PACE is a congeries of fellow-travelers."? I you write something that makes no sense, I wouldn't call another person a "buffoon."

  21. I knew where this woman was headed when I watched the swearing in. She didn't get in as vice president of council on the first round of votes, but then voted against Debbie Campbell for the second round. Since nobody else was nominated, that was just plain spiteful, her and that Shields woman.

Told me right there her little civility act was just that, an act.

My daddy told me to watch out for people like that. Smile in your face and stab you in the back. Just an old timer's opinion.

  22. Why be critical of Mr. Harrison? He simply noted the level on which Shields functions.

  24. Not all interns are free. My son was an intern at a private company about 16 years ago. He earned about $22K a year for 6 months work.

Sorry, but I call 'em like I see 'em. You may not be aware that Shanie has left meeting early stating that she wanted to get to Ocean Downs.

Sorry Skippy, I did. They were not offered interns. In fact, Cohen had requested interns in the past and was ignored by PACE.

I don't care if there are interns. In fact, I think it's great. My question was why is Mitchell sharing an intern with Ireton AND I found it interesting that the young man who Mitchell introduces as "My intern" is the guy doing much of the work she claims credit for.

How much context do you want? When I try to provide full context we get complaints about posts being too long. Even then, it's a refuge for people who disagree with a post, can't argue against it, but don't want to resort to the name calling of the usual suspects.

"Congeries" means a collection or aggregation. I admit that I didn't know that one myself, so I looked it up. Do I need to define "fellow-traveller"?

Anon 1637 has a decent vocabulary. You don't and evidently don't care to improve yours (as I did).

    Who's the buffoon?

You are correct. Private sector interns must be paid. Public and non-profit sector interns do not have to be paid.

  26. When Mikey Dunn is elected mayor in 2013 PACE will control Salisbury -- like it almost did under Barrie Tilghman.
