District of Columbia police officials are set to testify about the use of police escorts for celebrities.
Police Chief Cathy Lanier and other officials are due to appear Thursday before a D.C. Council committee on public safety.
The issue attracted public attention in April after actor Charlie Sheen received a police escort from Dulles International Airport to a performance at DAR Constitution Hall. He posted about the ride on his Twitter account.
Councilmember Phil Mendelson, who chairs the committee, called for the hearing after The Associated Press reported last month that other celebrities, including Bill Gates, Jay-Z and John Wall of the Washington Wizards, had also received police escorts in the last two years.
They don't need a police escort, unless they pay for it. Just another way to say "look at me, I'm famous." If we the American people would turn off the TV for a week and quit paying attention to these egotistical maniacs for a minute, maybe they won't feel as important. They are definitely not needed.
