Come Join Us On Tonight In Willards

Salisbury News will be at the 4th of July Fireworks Celebration on Sunday, July 3rd. The East Side Chamber of Commerce will host the event once again this year after the City of Salisbury and Wicomico County have refused to celebrate America for the past several years.

One small Chamber and a few small local communities have come together in Willards to provide this celebration and my hat is tipped to them once again for bringing yet another bigger fireworks show again this year. Yes, it will be even bigger than last year.

So come join us as we bring the Urban Assault Vehicle to enjoy Family and Friends for what always turns out to be one of the best events of the year.

We haven't decided what we'll be doing this year but you can always expect Salisbury News to have something going on. See you there.

  1. You should come to Snow Hill on Friday night and see how the Worcester County folks live! Works on the river - it's a blast.

  4. Only lived in Salisbury a short while, but have come to love reading the SBY News. Best way to keep in the know on the community news. I will definitely be there just to see whatever is going on. Love the blog! Might not always agree, but that's the beauty of free speech!

they will not be firing off ANY rockets in Willards. That was a really stupid and hateful comment.

I hope one goes up our butt.

  7. The county is broke. You should know that Joe. If you want low taxes, don't expect the extras.

  8. Anonymous 8:56pm - Has the county been broke for over 4 years now and if I am not mistaken the county does not do the fireworks anyway. So why hasn't the City of Salisbury done fireworks in over 4 years? I will tell you why THEY SUCK !!!

There is no place left to have them and the county wont fund them if there was.

  10. Actually, the fireworks were provided by the Salisbury Jaycees, however since the Jaycees could not procure the funding for the fireworks display, they can not afford to have them.

  11. It's a disgrace that these little communities can do fireworks and Salisbury can't! Something is definitly wrong with this picture.

  12. hey everyone, just stop griping and go to the fireworks (it really is a nice celebration there), or go wherever you and your family would like.
remember we are celebrating our independence. be thankful we still have it. just have a great day with friends and family regardless. don't depend on others to make you happy and meet all your needs.

  13. Unfortunately due to an employment called "retail" some of us or most of us have to work on the 4th. No barbecues or family fun for us..I agree its horrible that Salisbury discontinued their fireworks..It was always a tradition in my family to go but cant share that with my granddaughters unless we pay an admission ticket to a shorebirds game and wait for them there...What has happened to our city? Taking away family things is what has happened...so sad...

  14. Does anybody know what it costs to have a decent fireworks display? It is a crime that salsibury and the county find money for every other BS project but can't have a family celebration for our independance. The more I read about our founding, I realize that we had a very low probability of success and it was the "heart" that americans had that made it happen. We should never forget that. We experienced a repressive government from over seas and now we are beginning to have one right here. It is time that we(the silent majority) stand up for customs and traditions or the PC crowd will get rid of all of them. A friend of mine organized fund raising for the Christmas lights at the park and I would like to look into doing the same for the 4th of July fireworks so my children understand the meaning of the day other than just a day off from work.

  15. What time will this be ?

  16. the festivities start at 4:00 but the show will be shortly after 9:00 pm

  17. Definitely come, it's always a great time, mostly because it's attended by good people who know how to have a good time and not by some of the trash that you see running around parts of Salisbury. Proves you can have a large group of people together who know how to have fun without drugs, guns, knives, cussing and pants down to your knees. You know, true Americans!

  18. Joe, I think your comment that the county and the city refuse to celebrate the fourth is inaccurate. The fireworks were historically sponsored by the Jayceees. It became increasingly difficult to find a location to hold the fireworks, and the Jaycees could no longer come up with the money. How do you expect the county to fund it while they are still furloughing employees. Fireworks are and extra. You all are the first to talk about wanting low taxes, but it is obvious that you don't realize that with low taxes, comes less things. Where is sussex county's? I see some of the beach towns are doing it, but not sussex county. You are always talking about how great they are. If they are, why do you spend so much time in Maryland, Salisbury, and Wicomico County. If I had as many problems with a place as you do, I wouldn't go there. You live in Delaware, there is nothing that makes you come across the line. You chose to buy in Maryland. If you don't like it, sell.

  19. anonymous 11:56, I have to agree with the first portion referencing the Jaycees. They, (as a group) never came to me and asked for help financialy.

A few years ago Bob Harris and I came up with the idea of having fireworks somewhere and Bob really came through for every one.

Times are even tougher and there's even a threat there might not be fireworks in Willards next year.

That being said, I have personally stepped up to the plate and have offered to take the entire project over, even if it costs us 100% to pull it off next year, it will happen.

As for why I spend so much of my time in Wicomico County, you conveniently forget that I own several properties in Wicomico County. I am more vested in WC than you are.

Sussex County has their stuff together. Salisbury IS the biggest City on the Eastern Shore, besides Ocean City. The politics of Salisbury and Wicomico County are far more interesting than anything going on in Sussex County.

To do what I do in Sussex County would quickly fail. If YOU don't like me OR Salisbury News, why do you come visit it so frequently and complain about what I do.

So you see, what I do works. Our advertisers enjoy the best home run for their money than ANY other form of media on the Shore and its a win/win all around, even for you.

Because I'm invested in Wicomico County AND Salisbury, you need to shut your mouth and stop challenging me on this matter.

Do tell every one reading these comments, are YOU willing to fund the entire 4th of July fireworks next year? The answer is, NO! Start giving back to your community and stop complaining about those that do.

  20. Aside from your rundown properties in Pittsville and Powelville, you own a property downtown. Why would you "invest" in an area that is in such bad shape politically and economically as you claim. I disagree with the fact that you are more vested than me in Wicomico County. I happen to like this area the way that it is. I have lived here since I was in diapers. I am vested because I intend to raise my children here, and die here. I like it. I don't like it when I see people that are trying to tear it apart. You on the other hand, have not lived here that long. Aside from owning a few properties, you could really care less about this area. You don't care about your readers or their well being, and see an opportunity through ads to make a few bucks. Your posts are not always factual and present a spin to create controversy to increase your hits. So, while financially, you may be more "Vested" than me, I guarantee that I care about the well being of this area far more than you ever will.

  21. anonymous 12:42, I have far more properties than the ones you mention. The Powellville property has been completely renovated. The Pittsville property you mention is a diamond in the rough and will be renovated just as soon as the economy turns around. It is MUCH nicer than when I bought it and even the old Fire House is by far the nicest building in all of Pittsville.

You obviously don't like the fact that we keep local government "in check" unlike ALL of the other forms of local media. What we also have is more traffic than anyone else. I'm confident that kills you inside as well.

The advertising revenue has been paid back to the community, yet you very conveniently forget that in your misleading comment too.

The ONLY one "not factual" here is YOU. You are more than welcome to tell every one reading this some, (if not ALL) of the things we have been factually wrong about. Come on now, let's see you put your money where your mouth is. My guess is, you may disagree and not LIKE what we have published but you cannot come here and tell us we've been wrong.

    We'll wait.

  22. I'll add, IF you cared so much, why didn't you help the Jaycees raise the money needed and or a location to continue the fireworks. Your not vested. Your a local Anti Albero Blogger living off the backs of the local taxpayers and do nothing to give back to this community. That became obvious just as soon as you mentioned "hits".

You really need to get over the fact that you can never be me.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I do lots for the community. I am referring to posts over they years based on he said/she said. I have no problem with keeping local government in check, I am just able to see the forest for the trees when it comes to the future of the county, and the place I grew up. I don't need to justify myself letting you know what I do to help local people in the area. I don't constantly spout off about paying it forward. I am not an "anti albero" whatever. I don't frequent other blogs. I come on here to offer a different through a comment so that people aren't misled. Why is it that when somoene doesn't agree with you, they are anti albero. About the same a when someone doesn't support Obama, they are a racist. Just like your comment that salisbury "refuses to celebrate the fourth". That is completely false. It is a matter of dollars. What happened to the other year when you stated that you were going to take over the Jaycees Fireworks?

  24. ugh No Comment from joe on that one

  25. I didn't see you out there?

  26. There's plenty of open space down by the river at the head of Riverside Drive and more at the marina with a half finished condo on it.
So that leaves the money shortage out there.
I would bet that if donations were solicited by many means including jars on retailers' counter tops, that more than enough revenue could be generated. Maybe the Jaycees would be willing to step up to the plate.

  27. America is NOT independent from Britian.

    Not at all.

Hint: The Federal Reserve Bank - who are they?

  28. Jealous whiners always attack those that are successful and well liked.

How is it you know where Joe's properties are located? I only know of the one downtown. I wouldn't care if he owned a whole block. Good for him.

You do 'lots for the community' but 'I don't need to justify myself letting you know what I do to help local people in the area'.

I don't believe you. If you can see the forest, why don't you help make things better and help the ones who are trying to make things better?

If you really want to show Joe up here's a plan. Go out and do MORE than what he is doing. That would really put him in his place.

I can't wait. Better get started. You got a lot of catching up to do.

  29. Many years ago the Salisbury Jaycees would launch the fireworks from the roof of the old mall. The center of that property provides plenty of clearance both overhead and as a safety zone around it. Close down the street around the area, spectators could tailgate at the civic center or on the grass fields around the area. Now that the mall is no longer there, setup and breakdown would be so much easier and safer. Sounds like a nice site.....now who has the cash?!?!?!?
