Del. Watkins M. Abbitt Jr., I-Appomattox, will not seek re-election after 26 years in the House of Delegates.
His planned departure will bring to an end a Southside Virginia political dynasty that goes back 50 years. His late father, "Big Wat," served as a conservative Democrat in Congress, representing the 4th District, for 24 years.
"Little Wat" was first elected to the House of Delegates as a Democrat. He became an independent in 2001 and, a few years ago, joined the House Republican caucus, while remaining an independent.
"Well, my father was in it for 24 years and retired at 65, and I've been there for 26 years and I'm retiring at 67," he told the Appomattox Times-Virginian. "Maybe he and I came to the same conclusion at about the same age."
Abbitt is the eighth member of the House to announce that he will not seek re-election.
