Netanyahu Affirms Israel Will Not Return To '67 Border
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel 'will be generous' in giving back land to establish 'sizeable' Palestinian state, but will not return to '67 border and will not agree to a divided Jerusalem.
Why doesn't he just say, "there will NEVER be a Palisitinian state, the ONLY people that are allowed to live here are US, and we will NEVER EVER compromise on ANYTHING EVER." Also, "NO ONE in the middle east can EVER be allowed to have nuclear weapons except, of course, for Israel, which can have as many as it pleases."
The Palestinians have never shown a willingness to truly negotiate, but no one should be labelling Israel or Netty as innocent victims. The 1967 borders may or may not be a good idea (and there is no one on this blog who can say anything more than that,) but Israel is coming at this from a direction of "we will not give up anything at all, but you will compromise until you do what we want."
Maybe that is why the right-wingers here are so Pro-Israel here. That idea is a very Repblican approach to negotiating.
At this point, I don't think either side will be happy until the last of eachother are all dead, which might not be a bad thing.
Dan, Netanyahu is not as stubborn as you think. He agreed with the settlement freezes. 1967 borders is not a good idea and Israel will never go for it because it will make the country only 9 mile wide at one point and very volunerable militarily. I think that some compromise is however needed, such as to give them back east Jerusalem and Golan Heights but not Gaza or West Bank. Also it would be impossible to relocate half a million Israeli settlers. I am an Obama supporter, but I disagree with his stand on Israel. I do not that the speech benefited him politically. I am also OK with Israel having nuclear weapons because they will never use it in a way a terrorist would. I am very liberal on majority issues, but when it comes to Israel, I'm to the right of Dick Chaney. I am not sure if you've ever been to Israel... Those people live are ready for terrorists and war every day.
Netanyahu is crafty and did nothing but political grandstanding. He played on our 24/7 news cycle as well as hyperpartisan atmosphere. Nowhere did Pres. Obama EVER say Isreal was supposed to drawback to the '67 borders and the pres.'s comments were in line with the US's position for the last 10+ years.
I am ashamed that so many would let a foreign lobby dictate what the US should do. If France, Brazil, or any other country had this much influence, you guys would be screaming bloody murder.
