MDGOP Alcohol Tax Statement

ANNAPOLIS, MD Maryland Republican Party Chairman Alex X. Mooney issued the following statement today in response to Governor O’Malley signing the Alcohol Tax into law:

"Today Governor O’Malley and Democrat leaders gleefully broke their word to not raise taxes on Marylanders if reelected. By signing the Alcohol Tax into law, Democrats unwillingly admitted that all tax hikes unfairly burden Maryland families by causing them to rethink how they spend their hard earned money.  Democrats should now be honest with the Maryland people and admit that if the logic behind an Alcohol Tax is to increase prices to reduce demand, then the same logic must be applied to every tax and fee that’s proposed.  After all, how can they argue that a tax on alcohol will discourage drinking but a tax on gasoline won’t discourage driving or business taxes will not discourage job creators from opening their doors in our state?

“It’s time for Democrats to stop using our wallets as a personal piggybank for reckless government spending. This nickel-and-diming of Marylanders must stop now.”
