GOVERNOR MARTIN O’MALLEY ANNOUNCES EDUCATION APPOINTMENTS

Five Marylanders appointed to three boards, one reappointed

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Governor Martin O’Malley announced the appointments of five Marylanders and the reappointment of one today to education boards along the Eastern Shore and in Baltimore County.

“Strong public schools, world-class teachers and principals, and a workforce with the skills they need to compete in the 21st Century are essential if Maryland is to come through this national recession stronger and more quickly than other states,” said Governor Martin O’Malley.  “I’m pleased to appoint these professionals to their respective education boards.  Our first-in-the-nation schools and world-class higher education system put Maryland in a unique position to be a winner in this new economy.”

The following appointments were announced today:

Wor-Wic Community College Board of Trustees:

Martin Terrence Neat has been appointed to the Wor-Wic Community College Board of Trustees.  He is President and CEO of First Shore Federal Savings and Loan Association. He has served as Chairman of the Wor-Wic Community College Capital Campaign Foundation and as Board Chair of the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore.  He is a Board Member and Charter President of the Salisbury Neighborhood Housing Services, a past Chair of the Greater Salisbury Committee and a Board Member of the Peninsula Regional Medical Center. Mr. Neat has a Masters of Business Administration degree from the Franklin P. Perdue School of Business and a Masters of Arts degree in History  from Salisbury State University. Mr. Neat lives in Salisbury.

Chesapeake College Board of Trustees:

Lee Nash McMahan has been appointed to the Chesapeake College Board of Trustees.  He is currently the Vice President of Business Development and owner of the Tri Gas and Oil Co., Inc. in Federalsburg, Maryland.  Previously he served as the Vice President and General Manager of the M & L GMC Trucks, Inc. Mr. McMahan is the Past President of the Mid Atlantic Propane Gas Association and on the Directors Advisory Council of the M&T Bank-Mid Atlantic.  He was also recently elected to the Mid Atlantic Petroleum Dealers Association Board of Directors. He has served on the Caroline County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Mid Shore Council on Family Violence, and has represented Caroline County on the Maryland Chamber of Commerce Board. Mr. McMahan graduated from Towson State University with a major in Economics.  Mr. McMahan lives in Williston.
 

Baltimore County Board of Education:

Cornelia Bright Gordon, Esq. has been appointed to an at-large seat on the Baltimore County Board of Education.  Ms. Gordon is currently the Chief Attorney and previously was the Supervising Attorney in the Administrative Law Unit of the Legal Aid Bureau, Inc. in Baltimore City.  She received her Bachelor’s degree in English and Education from Dartmouth College in 1977 and her Juris Doctor degree from the University Of Maryland School Of Law in 1980. With thirty years of legal experience in areas such as civil, environmental, criminal and administrative law, she has significant experience in project management and program administration that includes regulatory review and compliance, budget and policy drafting.  Prior to her work at the Legal Aid Bureau, she was an Administrative Law Judge in the Maryland Office of Administrative Hearings.  While working at the Maryland Department of the Environment, she established a hearing office for the new cabinet-level department, where cases involved highly complex environmental prosecutions and appeals.    She is a member of the Maryland State Bar, the U.S. District Court Trial Bar, the Waring-Mitchell Law Society and the Dartmouth and University of Maryland School of Law Alumni Associations, the First Baptist Church of Guilford, and an NAACP Life Member.  She has provided training in numerous law-related areas, such as Education Law Enrollment Rights, Legal Principles of School Discipline, Advanced Housing Law and Civil Impact Leadership and has served as a faculty advisor at the National Judicial College. Ms. Gordon lives in Towson.

Michael J. Collins has been appointed to an at-large seat on the Baltimore County Board of Education.  Mr. Collins is currently the Chairman of the State Board of Contract Appeals.  Mr. Collins began his career as an educator in Baltimore County as a history teacher at Kenwood High School from 1962 to 1992.  During much of that period, he served in both the Maryland House of Delegates (1978-1986) and the Maryland Senate (1986-2002).  Mr. Collins received his Bachelor of Science degree in Education and History from the University of Scranton in 1962 and his Masters Degree in Liberal Arts from The Johns Hopkins University in 1966.  Mr. Collins lives in Essex. 

Dr. James E. Coleman has been reappointed to represent District 4 on the Baltimore County Board of Education.  Dr. Coleman had served as an at-large member.  He will represent District 4 on the Baltimore County Board of Education. Dr. Coleman has been a full professor of Mathematics at the Baltimore City Community College since 1986 and prior to that he was an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Coppin State University.  He began his education career as a Mathematics high school teacher in South Carolina.  Dr. Coleman received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Education from Benedict College in South Carolina in 1964 and his Master of Arts degree in Mathematics from Morgan State University in 1970.  Dr. Coleman is a member of the Union Baptist Church and professional organizations such as the Maryland and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.  His numerous awards include the Focus on Teaching Award from the Maryland State Board of Community Colleges and recognition as one BCCC’s Top Instructors, as well as the Teaching Excellence Award from the University of Texas, Austin.  Dr. Coleman lives in Owings Mills.

Logan McNaney has been appointed as the student member of the Baltimore County Board of Education.  Mr. McNaney is currently a junior at the Lansdowne High School Academy carrying a 4.21 GPA.  He has consistently been ranked in the top ten percent of his class, while taking both AP English and AP U.S. History.  During the 10^th grade, he participated in Model United Nations, representing the Republic of Austria.  He was recognized as the Most Valuable Player on the Cross Country team in the 9^th, 10^th and 11^th grade.  He also is a member of the Indoor Track team where he has been recognized with the Sportsmanship Award.  He has served as the Baltimore County AVID representative/liaison since 2009.  He volunteers at the Second English Lutheran Church as an usher and website designer.  He tutored students at Arbutus Middle School in the 9^th grade and has been a member of the Junior Class Steering Committee.  He lives with his parents in Arbutus.
