The Joint Finance Committee on Wednesday voted to restore general assistance money and increase its financial support for care of some of Delaware's most vulnerable residents, but care providers -- who say they haven't seen an increase in eight years -- hope more money will come their way as lawmakers complete the budget-writing process.
With the state's financial advisory commission projecting $320 million more revenue than expected when Gov. Markell presented his budget proposals earlier this year, the JFC is working with state agencies and others to explore the best ways to use that extra money.
Wednesday, the 12-member committee voted unanimously to restore $4.5 million in general assistance money, which puts $95 a month into the pockets of about 3,700 state residents who have few other resources. More than 1,000 of those recipients are homeless.
