Shortage Of ADHD Drugs Gives Parents The Jitters

Manufacturing delays, heavy demand spark scramble for Adderall, Ritalin

Nationwide shortages of popular drugs used to treat ADD and ADHD are sending parents scrambling, with some combing multiple pharmacies for the Adderall and Ritalin that keep their kids calm.

Molly Taylor, 46, of Worcester, Mass., was turned away empty-handed this week when she went to pick up prescriptions of Adderall XR for herself and her 16-year-old son, Luke.

“They don’t have them,” an incredulous Taylor told msnbc.com. “You could be waiting several days, which would have a HUGE impact. If you can’t get it that day, it’s very, very difficult.”

  3. Take the Red 40 totally out of the diet and you will see a marked difference!
A lot of these kids ADD and ADHD can be controlled with diet but parents would rather give them a pill. It's easier! Down the road, they'll wonder how Little Johnny or Sweet Sue ended up being a drug addict!
Wake up people and take CARE of your kids instead of medicating them every chance you get!

  5. She takes it for the "speed" effect and gives it to him for the "slow" effect. All she had to do was run by the post office to check her PO Box (so creditors won't know her REAL address) for her disability check and his SSI check. By the time she gets back to the drug store, her state paid meds would be back in stock! Now, thats time management....

  7. 10:58 You are right about diet being able to control many of these kids. Far easier to let them pop a pill, especially with a third party payor.

  8. for those of us who have to take it to keep from driving our boss crazy,it is a pain to have to go to the doctor every thirty days and then the pharmacy.it cannot be called in as it is a serious medication.it may be speed to you but to us it is the calming and thought clearing that we need and my boss somehow knows the exact day i run out and stopping abrubtly can have side effects.thank god for the doctors and nurses and staff at delmarva internal and family medicine to keep me on track for the last 12 years.

  9. 5:52-- Wanna bet that your diet has a great deal to do with what's going on?
If you get the sugar, white flour and most of the chemicals out of your diet, you'd be AMAZED at how much better you'd be doing.. in a matter of days you'd feel a lot better.

  10. Not to mention exercise to go with those diet changes!
Look, my son was diagnosed with ADD. He didn't have the hyperactive part. We started watching everything he ate and seriously monitored EVERYTHING that went into his mouth. He was not allowed to have sodas, so we knew it wasn't a "caffiene" problem.
We found it was RED 40. It's is SO many things that you would never think to check.
If he consumed something with Red 40 in it, we could time it out. It would take 11 minutes and it was like he was climbing the walls!
That was the first change we were able to make and then built from there.
As far as 5:52 and your meds, maybe you should ask your doctor to put you on something that doesn't give withdrawls and doesn't peak and valley like Ritalin does. The meds are out there, I know for a fact but they're not prescribed in general because they're cheaper than the others. Less kickback for the doctors!
But at the same time, like we've said, check your diet and get exercise! It's a whole lot healthier, not to mention safer!
