Maryland Approves New Car Fee

Drivers are already dealing with high gas prices. But now you’ll be paying more to buy a car in Maryland, too.

State lawmakers approved an increase in what is called the “dealer fee.” That’s a fee that car dealers are allowed to charge for completing paperwork for the new vehicle.

The fee will now go from $100 to $200. And after three years, dealers will be able to charge $300 for the paperwork. The state expects to generate about $6 million a year from the charge.

The fee is not mandatory, and is usually worked into the price of vehicle, meaning you can negotiate the fee amount when buying a car.

  1. Boy I'm sure glad we didn't put Bob Erlich in as governor. I'm not sure we could handle all those fees that O'Mally said he(Erlich) was going to put on us.Just wanted to clarify that I was not talking about all these fees that O'Mally has doubled and or added since we gave him free will along with the rest of the dumiecrats in Annapolis.

  4. The way I read it, the State charges the MD dealer regardless of where the vehicle gets titled. It basically tells a DE resident not to bother shopping at Pohanka in Salisbury but to head up to Georgetown, DE instead. If the car is titled in MD, then you pay the HIGHER titling fee as well.

  5. It might be negotiable NOW. Give it a little while. Maryland will make it mandantory.

  6. ..I forgot to add...

It sounds as if someone that intends to title a car in MD may benefit from purchasing a car from a DE dealer since MD can't assess any fees on their "dealer fees". So, if you've never considered getting a competitive quote from a DE dealer, you may want to consider it in the future.

  7. Is the fee just for new car purchases or does it include used car purchases too?

  8. New only. SOME used dealers also charge this fee (mostly buy here/pay heres) but not all used dealers charge for paperwork.
Take note - this is not the end of this! This is only the FIRST fee!
Check out Senate Bill 714. Tags and title charges are going up too it looks like. It hasn't passed yet, but there have been 2 hearings and nobody's telling the story!
