Thanks Joe. That steps back in my childhood and I have listened to Mr. Long many days awaiting a specific flock to be sold. This is a wonderful post for those of us who have lived here all of our lives.
I would say mid to late 50's. I remember the show and Carroll Long both. He sold the poultry sometime around noon on Wednesday I think so that the farmers could be in the house to listen to their flock being sold. Fond memories.
For all of those out there - the chicken auction yielded higher prices for the independent poultry grower as opposed to the current practice of contract growers.
Everyone who owned a chicken house could sell their birds at the chicken auction. Today - the poultry company controls the incubation, feed conversion, heat, you name it.
I knew a lot of farmers who wished the chicken auction were still in existence.
I do remember Carroll Long and remember when he was on What's My Line. Can you believe that was as popular as DWTS and Idol! We had a small black and white TV. I graduated from H.S. in 56 and I think this was prior to that. Maybe 1954. Who remembers Bennett Cerf, Arlene Francis, Dorothy Kilgallen, Guest Star Actor David Niven?
