By Rep. Mike Pence
On Feb. 18, 2011, with bipartisan support, the House of Representatives passed the Pence Amendment, which would end taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood. In response, Planned Parenthood used its vast resources to launch slick Madison Avenue television ads portraying the group — the nation’s largest abortion provider — as an altruistic organization that provides health-care services to the poor and has only an incidental interest in abortion.
Despite efforts to suggest otherwise, the Pence Amendment does not reduce funding for cancer screenings or eliminate one dime of funding for other important health services to women; the money that does not go to Planned Parenthood as a result of the Pence Amendment will go to other organizations that provide these services. If the Pence Amendment becomes law, thousands of women’s health centers, clinics, and hospitals will still provide assistance to low-income families and women.
The Pence Amendment would simply deny any and all federal funding to Planned Parenthood.
Planned Parenthood clinics focus mainly on abortion — and because money is fungible, there is no way to fund the useful services without freeing up money for the organization to spend on abortion. In 2009, the group made only 977 adoption referrals and cared for only 7,021 prenatal clients, but performed a record 332,278 abortions. In other words, a pregnant woman entering a Planned Parenthood clinic was 42 times more likely to have an abortion than to either receive prenatal care or be referred for adoption.
Planned Parenthood recently made plain the centrality of abortion to its mission by mandating that every one of its affiliates have at least one clinic that performs abortions within the next two years.
Advocates for the abortion industry have sought to portray efforts to defund Planned Parenthood as a “War on Women,” but the issue is big business, and that business is abortion. This legislative battle is about Big Abortion vs. American taxpayers. As Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood director, recently said, “Planned Parenthood’s mission, on paper, is to give women quality and affordable health care and to protect women’s rights. In reality, their mission is to increase their abortion numbers and in turn increase their revenue.”

So Joe- Not attacking here, just pointing out a glaring inconsistency in the Republican party's doctrine.
ReplyDeleteRepublicans don't want government
regulating people's lives, right? Well, they sure want abortion regulated right out of this country.
Hypocritical, huh?
I know that we live in a conservative area, but here's a fact that the GOP should know. Planned Parenthood provides (mostly) abortions for poor folks, often in inner cities. You know, where the entitlement culture has existed for 4 generations, test scores are much lower, crime rates much higher, etc. etc.
Sad but fair to say, there's a very good chance that these young pregnant gals recognize that the child will have next to no opportunity, or education, and quite possibly could end up on dope, in prison, dead, or perpetuating the entitlement culture for yet another generation.
I think the GOP's strategy on it's opposition to funding for PP is sort of like cutting off one's nose to spite one's face...
You ARE attacking, 4:20.
ReplyDeleteAnd using bogus logic.
Stopping the murder of babies, especially at taxpayer expense is not a question of government regulation.
We have laws that we need and want, including laws against murder.
That's what provides us with an orderly society.
You lefties keep trying to give a laundry list of good reasons to murder babies, but they're still human beings, and it's still murder.
Planned Parenthood is happy to oblige anybody who wants an abortion, no matter what kind of neighborhood they come from.
There's no 'glaring inconsistency' here.
No hypocrisy. Abortion is murder, and it should not be allowed, just as ANY murder must be prohibited in an orderly society.
That's been the position for a long time. And that's quite consistent with the long-standing structure of the American legal system.
If the 'young pregnant gals' have concerns for what their child might face, they'd do much better to just keep their pants on.
4:20 - they will never admit to the double standards. Stop tying to make them.
ReplyDeleteThough, I admit, it is really fun to try.
They are not trying to stop abortions. They don't want the tax payer to pay for it. It's now our responsibility to pay for their mistakes! Keep a dime between their legs. Funny how you libs think its ok to kill babies but the person that kills another you think should sit in prison.
ReplyDelete9:46 and 4:20....I believe most people are ok with regulating murder. Republicans want some regulation but not over bearing. Abortions can only be described as murder..which is already illegal yet abortions are allowed. I'm not saying I'm for or against abortions...I think it really depends on how far the pregnancy has progressed, but making taxpayers foot the bill is disgusting. I'm libertarian..and this has nothing to do with regulation and much more to do with taxpayers. Forcing taxpayers to pay for abortion, many of which are Christians, could be seen as a little big brother in my eyes. No double standard here in my opinion. 4:20, are you saying that govt should pay for abortions for welfare recepients? Sounds like encouraging bad behavior and just because someone is irresponsible and can't afford their baby doesn't give the govt the right to force taxpayers to pay for "getting rid" of the baby. Come on, how can you argue that abortions are ok in the first place, then go on to say that the govt should pay for and encourage them?? My pastor always said to pick you battles..
ReplyDeleteHas nothing to do with abortions themselves but how they are funded. The taxpayers are currently regulated/required to pay for abortions. Defunding taxpayer abortions is not regulation...it's deregulation. 4:20 and 9:46, how is defunding taxpayer funded abortions considered govt regulation? Making abortion itself illegal would be seen as govt regulation but defunding planned parenthood is exactly the opposite. Stay on topic.
ReplyDeletepeople act as if one of these future burdens on society might be the second coming of christ
ReplyDeletethat is if they believe it possible he may be poor black and jewish and of a virgin birth
in addition to abortion we should be sterilizing the addle minded the criminally insane and under achievers in general
prisoners should be made available to corporations for labor rather than outsourcing them and we will arm everyone and put them to work in the penal industrial machine as guards managers and distributors and we can build a huge robotic remote control army to police the world and impose atheistic views on dissenters
10:10, now that sounds like govt regulation. There are better ways to control population than abortions. And we may indeed be killing great contributors to our society. Either way abortion isn't the issue here..it's who should pay for them. Forcing Americans to directly participate in what many see as murder is wrong. No way around that. Please don't draw similarities to war...not even close.
ReplyDeletePlanned Parenthood has always pushed abortions on young expectant mothers. Yes they are murdering babies. And just think many good couples are out there wanting to adopt babies because they can't have children of their own. Some wait five or more years to adopt. There are so many wanting to adopt babies they go to extremes and pay thousands of dollars to not so reputable lawyers and others to get black market babies. So that blows your theory we would have to support all of those babies. However Planned Parenthood does not push adoption just abortions. So why should taxpayers money of christians and other that don't agree with murdering babies have to pay for these abortions.
