An 8.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Honshu, Japan around midnight (EST), with at least four aftershocks in the magnitude of 6.5 to 7.1 being reported since then.
The resulting tsunami has done major damage, and is affecting areas as far away as the US west coast.
This was one of the most significant earthquakes to have been reported in the last 100 years, and one of a number of quakes that have occurred in this region in recent days.
It will be weeks before the impact of this event can be estimated.
