STATEMENT FROM O'MALLEY-BROWN CAMPAIGN

BALTIMORE, MD (June 30, 2010) -- Tom Russell, Campaign Manager for the O'Malley-Brown campaign released the following statement this evening.

"We would like to welcome Ms. Kane back to the Ehrlich team in her new role. She is certainly no stranger to Maryland politics and is very familiar with Bob Ehrlich's political ideology, having served on his political team during the one Ehrlich term. This election will ultimately be about which candidate puts the interests of Maryland's working families ahead of the special interests, and who is on the side of working families; it will be about which candidate has a vision to move Maryland forward and which candidate wants to take Maryland back. Ms. Kane certainly has an interesting background working for the family business and a unique perspective on Bob Ehrlich's background. We look forward to her being part of this discussion."

BREAKING NEWS!

Bob Ehrlich Picks Mary Kane as Running Mate
Working Mom, Small Business Advocate, and Attorney to Run for Lt. Governor

FACEBOOK -- Bob Ehrlich announced tonight that he has selected Mary D. Kane as his running mate in the campaign for Governor of Maryland. Ehrlich first announced the selection to his 27,000 fans on Facebook. Kane will help advance Bob Ehrlich’s central priorities for Maryland: creating jobs, lowering taxes on families and small businesses, and fixing Maryland’s budget mess.

Kane, 48, is a first generation American whose parents immigrated to the United States from Ireland. The mother of three college-age children, Kane currently serves as Director of Special Projects for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, where she assists military veterans, as well as National Guardsmen and Reservists searching for employment upon returning from overseas. She previously served as Assistant State’s Attorney for Montgomery County and Maryland Secretary of State.

“I am delighted that Mary has agreed to join with me on my mission to bring more jobs, lower taxes, and a brighter future to all Marylanders,” Ehrlich said. “She has a great mix of experience in government and the private sector, and knows the joys and challenges of raising a family in Maryland. She will be true partner in government who shares my belief that fixing Maryland’s problems requires candor and real solutions, not cynicism and fear.”

“I am honored to join Bob Ehrlich’s campaign to bring new ideas and proven leadership to state government,” Kane said. “As the daughter of immigrants, I gained a profound appreciation for what is possible in Maryland: unlimited economic opportunity, safe neighborhoods, and unparalleled quality of life. But achieving these goals requires leadership. If I have the honor of serving as Lt. Governor, I will work tirelessly to ensure those blessings are available to every Maryland family. I look forward to getting to know my fellow Marylanders in the coming months and offering new ideas for a new Maryland.”

A. Kaye Kenney Filed In Annapolis Today For The Maryland House Of Delegates For District 38B

Filing for House of Delegates for District 38B

A. Kaye Kenney today announced her candidacy for the Maryland House of Delegates for District 38B. Mrs. Kenney, a Republican, filed today with the State Board of Elections. She is seeking the vacant seat in District 38B.

A. Kaye’s independent nature has endeared her to a broad spectrum of citizens. Kenney, along with her husband, Bill, has been involved with agriculture throughout their married life, having grown poultry and traditional crops. In 2004, they along with their son Brent opened Grist Mill Gardens in Pittsville. Kenney and her family have maintained an active involvement with both Wicomico County Farm Bureau and Maryland Farm Bureau. The Kenney’s, a first generation farming family, have a true understanding of the plight of small business owners. A. Kaye will be an advocate for all the residents of District 38B who are affected by the decisions being made in Annapolis.

Kenney has served in several capacities in local affairs. Governor Robert L. Ehrlich appointed her to Poultry Issues Action Team 2003. She was appointed in 2004 and continues to serve on the Wicomico County Liquor Licensing Commission and has served as chairman of the commission since 2006. In 1995, she and a diverse group of concerned citizens convinced the Wicomico County Council to maintain their ownership in the Wicomico Nursing Home, a non-profit establishment that originated from a need in the African American community. Kenney was appointed by the Wicomico County Council to serve on the Charter Review Committee and aided with the drafting of the new charter. And she recently worked with the Wicomico County Concerned Landowners attempting to find a fair and balanced solution to discourage sprawl in Wicomico County.

Kenney, 61, is a lifelong resident of Wicomico County. Her family’s roots can be traced to Worcester County, where her Mother’s family lived in the Taylorville area.

A major pride of Kenney’s is her family. She and her husband of 37 years, Bill, have two children, Brent and his wife, Julie who reside in Parsonsburg. Kara and her husband Brad and their son Oliver reside in Chestertown.

One of Kenney’s greatest attributes is listening and she looks forward to meeting all the residents of District 38B and hearing their concerns. “I am incredibly humbled by the encouragement to run shown to me by my family, friends, and residents of District 38B,” Kenney said.

Troopers Investigate Drowning Of 2 Year-old Girl (Up Dated Information)

Location: 100 block of Lake Side Drive, Laurel, Sussex County, DE
Date of Occurrence: Tuesday June 30, 2010 at 9 p.m.
Victim: 2 year-old female

Resume:

Laurel
– Delaware State Police are still investigating the apparent drowning of a two year-old girl.

Troopers responded to the Relax Inn located on US 13 outside Laurel last evening for the report of a missing 2 year-old girl. A mother, her 5 year-old son, her 2 year-old daughter and a boyfriend checked in to the motel at 3 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon. The four were displaced from the Carvel Garden Apartments due to a maintenance issue at their home.

The mother left the motel for work at 4 p.m. and the two children and boyfriend stayed in the room and fell asleep. The children woke up and managed to unlock the door and left the motel room.

The two children walked behind the motel towards Lake Side Drive. The 2 year-old managed to get into a fenced in pool area where she entered the water. It is unclear whether she fell in or jumped in to the pool.

When the male discovered the children missing, he notified the state police. Responding troopers found the 5 year-old boy on the motel property. Troopers and the Laurel Police Department conducted a search of the area.

A Laurel Police Officer located the unconscious girl in the pool at a residence located behind a house on Lake Side Drive. The two year-old was taken to Nanticoke Hospital in Seaford where she was pronounced dead.

The investigation is still on going.

Colonel Robert M. Coupe Announces 2009 Trooper Of The Year

Date of Occurrence:
June 30, 2010 at 11:30 a.m.
Resume:

Dover
– Today at the Wilmington University Dover Campus, Colonel Robert M. Coupe announced the 2009 Trooper of the Year. Colonel Coupe announced Trooper First Class Anthony Andrews as the Delaware State Police 2009 Trooper of the Year for his outstanding efforts and contributions to the Division and the citizens of Delaware.

During 2009, Trooper First Class Andrews was actively involved in 12 drug related investigations. Many of these investigations started as a result of a traffic stop and Trooper First Class Andrews’ initiative to go “Beyond the Traffic Stop.” Trooper First Class Andrews’ un-relentless efforts were instrumental in numerous drug investigations being brought to successful conclusions by the Sussex County Drug Task Force.

Several of these traffic stops not only resulted in the seizure of drugs along with paraphernalia but weapons, sex offenders and fugitives. One of the fugitives was wanted on burglary charges from Florida and the sex offender had been a fugitive from New Castle County since 2007. One traffic stop for a seat belt and littering violation resulted in the location of a loaded handgun in the driver’s waist band.

Trooper First Class Andrews is always willing to assist the Sussex County Drug Task Force by providing confidential informants, assistance with surveillance and search warrant executions. A few of the more notable seizures were $4,400.00, 161 grams of marijuana, seven pounds of marijuana and $14,000.00.

Each of these investigations demonstrates the tremendous initiative of Trooper First Class Andrews. His reputation when providing reliable information to criminal investigation units is unmatched at his troop and in Sussex County. Trooper First Class Andrews not only provides accurate intelligence to the Detectives but knows and understands the importance of being actively involved whenever his assistance is requested. His involvement in these investigations, with experienced Detectives, has provided him the chance to learn and grow in his young career as a Trooper.

Many times young Troopers tend to focus their attention in one area other areas of their job performance usually suffer. This is not the case with Trooper First Class Andrews,’ his performance appraisal for 2009 met or exceeded expectations in all areas and his productivity was at or above the shift and troop averages.

Trooper Andrews lives in Sussex County with his wife and two children.

Atheist Billboard Defaced On N.C.'s Billy Graham Parkway

Unknown vandals unhappy about atheists' billboard in Charlotte, N.C., spray-painted "Under God" on the ad, the city's atheist association discovered Monday. The defaced message will remain in place until after July 4, the group reports, which is the soonest that workers can furnish a fresh billboard image. Here's how the vandalized billboard now looks:

The billboard reads, "One Nation Indivisible," which is the phrase preceding the 1954 insertion of the words "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance, reports the Charlotte Observer's Tim Funk. The billboard was erected on Billy Graham Parkway last week. (Graham is, of course, the state's famous evangelical preacher.)

Similar North Carolina ads have gone up in Asheville, Greensboro, Wilmington, Raleigh, and Winston-Salem as a Fourth of July project by the area's atheist association. The group has filed a police report and will replace the billboard.

“It was done by one or two people off on their own who decided their only recourse was vandalism rather than having a conversation,” Charlotte Atheists & Agnostics spokesman William Warren said. “It does show how needed our message is. As atheists, we want to let people know we exist and that there’s a community here.” Warren told the Observer when the sign first went up that its location wasn't intended as a rebuke to the Rev. Graham.

America's Greatest Education Governor

Dear Joe,

We have some great news today on Governor O'Malley's leadership to move Maryland forward and deliver results for Maryland's students, teachers and families.

The National Education Association has named Governor O'Malley "America's Greatest Education Governor" for his efforts to support public education in our State and provide our teachers, students, parents and education professionals with the tools they need to build the #1 ranked public school system in the nation.

According to the National Education Association, Governor O'Malley has "made great strides in improving school funding, expanding school programs, and taking the needs of the whole child into account in education policy decisions. He continues to be a champion of public education and truly believes, as we do, that education will lead to a brighter and better future for all of us."
NEA President Dennis Van Roekel said, "Lots of governors like to think of themselves as education governors, but Governor O'Malley has really earned that accolade."

Over the last four years, Governor O'Malley has made difficult decisions to protect public education. While facing a national recession, he has fought for and secured a record $5.7 billion this year alone for public education - and Maryland students responded by achieving at historic levels.

Because of the hard work, commitment and dedication of our parents and teachers, our students are better prepared to enter the global economy. Today, Maryland has the highest passing rate for students taking Advanced Placement tests in the nation. And between 2007 and 2009, under Governor O'Malley, the number of students taking AP tests in science, education, engineering and math has increased by 65%.

While we are not done yet reforming Maryland's public schools to make sure every child has access to a world-class education, today's announcement proves that Maryland is making the right decisions under Governor O'Malley to protect public education, support our students, teachers and parents and build the workforce of tomorrow that will drive Maryland's innovative economy for years to come.

I hope you'll take a minute to learn more about how Governor O'Malley is protecting public education in Maryland and get involved in our campaign to Move Maryland Forward.

Thank you,
Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown

Maybe The Sanctions Are Working?

Iran’s oil exports plummeted 24 percent over the 12-month period ending last February and energy revenues dropped by $19 billion, according to reports published by the semi-official Fars News Agency.

Oil production also has dropped, primarily due to the international sanctions that make it harder for other countries to invest in the Islamic Republic’s gas and oil industry. The Financial Times reported in May that oil production dropped by 300,000 barrels a day.

The drop in revenues comes at the same time that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as continues his spending spree for more nuclear sites and advanced weapons, leaving his regime with little money to compensate for the loss of investments in local energy projects.

Despite the government’s public scoffing that sanctions are useless, government officials privately told the London Guardian, "The president doesn't like to hear bad news. It appears the people around him don't tell him when there's something wrong. But there are others raising alarms about the economy. The government isn't panicking yet, but it should be."

Iran suffers from triple trouble: limited refining capacity for domestic demand of oil, cancellations of oil contracts from Far Eastern countries seeking lower prices elsewhere, and the United Nations Security Council’s sanctions that are cutting into foreign investments to expand refining facilities.

Iran’s ability to refine crude oil already had been severely crippled before the sanctions: it never fully recovered from the effects of the eight-year war with Iraq in the 1980s. Growing domestic demand for refined oil also has limited the amount of crude oil it can export.

Democrats Add Teacher Money To War Funding Bill

House Democrats, who are trying to pass a long-stalled war funding bill this week, have attached $10 billion to help avoid teacher's union layoffs when schools reopen.

The approximately $70 billion measure is anchored by President Barack Obama's $30 billion request for the troop surge in Afghanistan and contains money for disaster aid accounts, foreign aid and disability benefits for Vietnam veterans exposed to Agent Orange.

The bill's release late Tuesday night was the surest signal yet that House leaders are committed to passing it this week, despite great resistance among many Democratic lawmakers and deepening anxiety over the Afghanistan war effort among Obama allies such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

The difficulty in passing the bill in the House is magnified by disagreement between Republicans supportive of the war — who insist the measure be "clean" of unrelated spending — and Democrats who want funding for the unpopular war to carry unrelated party priorities. Republicans are threatening to withhold support for the overall package if Democratic add-ons are included.

Where Do We Go From Here

Last year we delivered a message saying there would be incredible changes to Salisbury News. We said we would start advertising, we delivered. We said we'd have an on line news show, we delivered. We also said we were going to tone things down and we delivered on that as well.

The focus for Salisbury News is to deliver real time news and information ahead of the MSM and we've delivered that as well.

The back and forth bickering with other Blogs & MSM needs to end. Therefore I am going to be the first to not only say we're going to drop that completely from Salisbury News, we'll deliver on that promise.

The focus needs to be more positive and that's what we're going to do. We're going to take the "high road" and deliver you a more pleasurable place to come and get updated on what's going on here on the Eastern Shore and important information that affects us around the world.

I want to thank so many of you for calling, sending text messages, photos and e-mail messages. For the most part I'm a one man show. As we continue to grow each and every day, my time becomes that much more in demand. Because the community keeps us informed and up to speed, it allows me to focus on being close to the computer to deliver that real time news and information YOU help us deliver.

As for our advertisers, we're extremely pleased that their businesses are doing so well. Their support has been overwhelming and I can't thank them enough. That being said, I want all of you to know that there is a master plan to focus on giving back to our community. We want to take a portion of our advertising income and make donations back by "Paying It Forward" to those who need it most.

By advertising with Salisbury News, you too will be participating in making donations to local causes. I call it, "GOOD MONEY AFTER GOOD MONEY." Together we can bring something positive and let me show you how we plan on doing just that.

Throughout the month of July, Salisbury News will be selling our "YOU'VE BEEN BLOGED" Tee Shirts at Mr. Curly's in Salisbury for $10.00 each. ALL profits will go to the Wicomico Humane Society. We have sizes, Large, XL & 2XL available and if we sell out, we'll order more. They will be available tomorrow and we may have a few other locations selling them as well, we'll keep you posted.

Each month we will try to find a cause to continue this program, so whenever you see someone wearing these shirts you'll know their donations went to many of the local non profit organizations.

So let's all work together to rise up and make that positive difference and hopefully encourage others to do the same.

A Letter To The Editor

IS JOHN CANNON’S DECISION A REAL SURPRISE?

It is not at all surprising that Mr. Cannon opted to seek the seat held by the late Page Elmore in the Maryland House of Delegates rather than run for reelection to the Wicomico County Council. The latter body has just shown itself to be dysfunctional in failing to pass a budget, and the situation is not likely to change after this year’s election.

Two weeks ago the three other Republican members voted with Mr. Cannon to cut the funds for the salary of the County’s “public information officer” but refused to vote with him to adopt the amended budget. Therefore, Rick Pollitt’s budget, including the salary for the “PIO”, became effective by default. Cannon was the only member to vote for the amended version.

Then there’s the action last year by the other members of the Council to oust Mr. Cannon as the president of that body, again with the support of Republican members. It appears that those members will be reelected, and are likely to dominate the next Council.

Mr. Cannon can be more effective as a member of the General Assembly than a Council that probably will remain largely ineffectual, especially if Rick Pollitt is reelected, which seems very likely to occur. And it greatly behooves both Wicomico County and the City of Salisbury for the seat to be held by a resident of the County.

We are pleased but not surprised that John Cannon decided to move on – hopefully to the General Assembly – and will support his candidacy. With his experience in local government, Mr. Cannon is the best choice among the announced candidates for the seat.

California Cities Shutting Police Forces To Close Budget Gaps

San Carlos, a Silicon Valley suburb that calls itself the City of Good Living, will hire contractors to maintain parks and negotiate with county officials to take over policing, becoming the latest California community eliminating basic services to close budget deficits.

Measures passed by the City Council last night may save the community of 28,000 residents about $2.5 million a year, according to Mayor Randy Royce. San Carlos faces a $3.5 million deficit for the fiscal year that begins July 1, on a budget of $25.8 million.

About 70 percent of U.S. municipalities are cutting jobs to cope with declining tax revenue, according to a survey published last month by the National League of Cities in Washington. One in five communities cut public-safety spending and revised union contracts, and almost one-quarter reduced health care.

San Carlos’s council voted 4-1 to pursue discussions with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department on taking over the 32- member police force for the city located 24 miles (39 kilometers) south of San Francisco, according to Royce.

Taking over policing may produce annual savings of $2 million, he said. Council members also chose to replace seven parks department jobs by hiring companies to cut grass and clean restrooms. That will save $500,000 a year, according to the San Carlos website.

‘Growing Trend’

“It is a growing trend,” said Frank Benest, a former city manager in nearby Palo Alto, California, who’s now a consultant to local governments. “Cities and counties are looking for ways of delivering services at a lower cost. A lot of the easy cuts have already been made.”

Dems Hope To Capture Open GOP Senate Seat On The Lower Shore

In one of the election’s closest and tactically significant statewide races, state Senate candidates Jim Mathias and Michael James are mostly separated by party affiliation and running on their resumes. Both say they are anti-tax, pro small-business fiscal conservatives and lean on those stances above all others.

For James, the objective is to link Mathias to the liberal Democratic establishment while Mathias highlights his record of breaking with the party on taxes and spending in his votes in the House of Delegates.

Granny Shocked By Police Stun Gun In Bed Sues

OKLAHOMA CITY — An 87-year-old grandmother subdued by police with a stun gun while she was lying in bed hooked up to an oxygen machine is suing her Oklahoma hometown.

Attorney Brian Dell said Tuesday that he filed the lawsuit June 21 on behalf of his client, Lona Varner. He did not specify the amount she's seeking from the city of El Reno but said it's at least $75,000.

Varner's grandson called 911 on Dec. 22 and told the dispatcher his grandmother "wanted to end her life" and that he was concerned she had taken some unknown medicine.

Officer Thomas Duran says in a police report that Varner pulled a kitchen knife from under her pillow and threatened to stab and kill him if he tried to take her from her home.

The report says another officer used a stun gun on Varner.

Welcome To Maywood, Mexico

Boasting a population that is 97% Hispanic, more than half foreign born, and 40% illegal, the Los Angeles County, Calif., incorporated city of Maywood has achieved the Reconquista goal. It is now as lawless and chaotic as any place in Mexico. Maywood is a warning to every city and town in America.

The Maywood City Council announced this week that after years of radical policies, corruption and scandal, the city was broke and all city employees would be laid off and essential city services contracted out to neighboring cities or to L.A. County government.

How did this happen? Until recently, Maywood was the model for "brown power" politics.

Maywood was the first California city with an elected Hispanic City Council, one of the first "sanctuary" cities for illegal aliens, the first city to pass a resolution calling for a boycott of Arizona after that state passed a law to enforce federal immigration laws, the first California city to order its police department not to enforce state laws requiring drivers to have licenses to drive, the first American city to call on Congress to grant amnesty to all illegals.

Council meetings were conducted in Spanish. Maywood was the leader in the peaceful, democratic achievement of the La Raza goal to take power in the U.S.

The City of Maywood started out quite differently. Back after World War II, Maywood was a booming blue-collar town with good jobs, a multi-ethnic suburb of Los Angeles.

On the 25th anniversary in 1949 of Maywood's incorporation as a city, the town celebrated with a beard-growing contest, a rodeo, and wrestling matches in City Park. Chrysler operated an assembly plant there until 1971.

But the early 1970s saw these industrial jobs in aerospace, auto and furniture manufacturing, and food processing evaporate under the pressure of higher taxes, increased local and state regulation, and the attraction of cheaper land and cheaper labor elsewhere.

The multi-ethnic Maywood of the post-war years was transformed in the ’80s and ’90s by wave after wave of Hispanic immigrants, many of them illegal.

In August 2006, a "Save Our State" anti-illegal immigration rally in Maywood drew hundreds of protesters—but a larger number of defenders of illegal immigration. The pro-illegal protesters carried signs which read "We are Indigenous ! The ONLY owners of this Continent!" and "Racist Pilgrims Go Home" and "All Europeans are Illegal Here."

According to newspaper reports at the time, objectors to illegal aliens were subject to physical attacks. A 70-year-old man was "slashed," a woman attacked, and cars vandalized. Pro-illegal demonstrators raised the Mexican flag at the U.S. Post Office.

The illegal population and their sympathizers became increasingly radicalized. Elections to the City Council saw "assimilationist" incumbent Hispanic council members ousted by La Raza supporting radical challengers.

For years, the Maywood City Council authorized police checkpoints to stop drunk driving. Drivers without licenses had their cars impounded. Illegals in California cannot get drivers licenses. By 2005, the number of such impounds were in the hundreds. A community campaign was launched forcing the City Council to suspend the checkpoints.

Cars were still being impounded whenever a police traffic-violation stop resulted in a driver without a license. Felipe Aguirre, a community activist with Comite Pro-Uno, an "immigration service center," coordinated a new campaign against any impounds. He was elected in 2005 to the City Council. He is the mayor of Maywood today.

Aguirre and a new majority of the council dismantled the Traffic Department. Illegals were given overnight-parking permits and impounds stopped. You didn't need a license to drive in Maywood. The Los Angeles Times wrote glowingly of this "progress" in a story entitled "Welcome to Maywood, Where Roads Open Up For Immigrants".

(You'll love the rest of this story..)

The Lemon Update

I'm happy to inform you that my lemon has been bought back. I have to give credit to Mr. David Wilson Jr. and his team at Preston (service dept/finance dept/drivers who delivered the cars and paperwork ). Mr.Wilson purchased the vehicle back because it would have taken Ford too long in the process of buying the car back.

Preston service dept did find out that the tires that Sherwood told Ford that had been replaced were not, just as I had suspected. Mr Wilson was involved in the process of handling the car issue from day one.

My doubts have now turned to trust in this dealership and I'm not just saying that because the car was bought back, I'm a person of honor and would not tell a lie just to benefit myself. I even got the advice from Mr. Wilson what would be the best vehicle to repurchase and it turned out to be another Ford Focus without all the issues.

I would like to add as I did in the last update, I never wrote this story to damage or discredit any body. I just wanted to get my concerns out there in hope that the right people would get my message. I have to honestly say the Mr.Wilson and Preston Has bent over backwards to resolve my issues which they have on their part 100%.

Reality-based Decision Making

When Troy, Michigan City Manager John Szerlag said he would consider privatizing all of Troy's city services, he said if the municipal departments could match the private company bids, he'd keep them.

The city's building department, however, never bothered to even put in an official bid, Szerlag said.

That's because a quick review found that every one of the 22 employees in the building department would have to take a 35 percent cut in pay, an option deemed unacceptable to the city employees, Szerlag said.

From 2001 to 2009, the city's general fund had subsidized the building department to the tune of $5.5 million dollars, according to Jim Nash, the city's financial services director.

Now, Szerlag estimates that the city will save as much as $500,000 a year by privatizing the department. Earlier this month, the Troy City Council approved privatization of the building department. It starts July 1.

"We are not alone," Szerlag said. "If other cities don't follow suit, they will be in trouble."

The city also privatized management of golf course operations, which included five full-time and 40 part-time employees. That started June 18. The city was able to guarantee a revenue stream of $265,000, regardless of rounds played, within the ballpark of a typical year of golf. And city officials say the private company hired has a much better handle on marketing the golf course to generate more money.

Next up to be reviewed for privatization is the Public Works Department, which includes everything from the city's water, sewer and streets to parks and recreation.

"It will be huge," Szerlag said.

Troy is among the growing number of cities whose financial situation has become more distressing.

GOVERNOR MARTIN O’MALLEY DELIVERS KEYNOTE ADDRESS BEFORE THE MARYLAND MUNICIPAL LEAGUE

O’Malley highlights job creation efforts, progress even in tough times

OCEAN CITY, MD
– Governor Martin O’Malley delivered the keynote address last night before the Maryland Municipal League, a membership association of city and town governments through the State. During his address, the Governor highlighted the job creation efforts of the O’Malley-Brown Administration, working together with local leaders throughout Maryland.

“We know that the most powerful place in our State is a family's home, and there is nothing more important to protecting that home than a job,” said Governor O’Malley. “The same unity and cooperation that it took to get through one of Maryland’s most difficult winters this year will be the key to plowing through the national economic storm. And as Marylanders we’re up to it. The great thing about the people of our State is that in times of adversity, we don’t make excuses, we make progress.”

Last month, Maryland added another 11,200 jobs to Maryland payrolls – the third straight month of job gains as the State continues to outpace the rest of the nation through this recovery. In the last four months, Maryland employers added nearly 38,000 jobs, a rate that is more than double the national growth rate. And unemployment in Maryland dropped to 7.2 percent, about 25 percent lower than the national rate last month and the lowest rate seen in Maryland in almost a year. Maryland remains one of only eight states that defends a Triple A bond rating, a seal of fiscal responsibility certified by all three rating agencies.

Noting the challenging economic times that all local leaders must navigate their respective jurisdictions through, the Governor acknowledged that “Our goal, our mission, our focus, must continue to be on creating, saving, and retaining Maryland jobs, and improving the conditions under which Maryland businesses – large and small – can create and save jobs. When given the choice between slipping back or moving forward, as Marylanders we always choose to move forward.”

The Governor highlighted extraordinary signs of progress that set Maryland apart from many other states, including Education Magazine’s ranking of Maryland’s public schools as number one in the nation for the second straight year. Even in tough times, the O’Malley-Brown Administration has dedicated record funding for K-12 education each of the last four years, and a record $1.3 billion for school construction across Maryland. At the same time, Governor O’Malley has cut Maryland spending by $5.6 billion, more than any other four-year period in state history.

Governor O’Malley noted that even in tough times, the choices we make can position Maryland to come through this national recession stronger and more quickly than other states. Capital investments under the O’Malley-Brown Administration have supported 20,000 jobs per year for the last four years, including investments in Community College facilities, sewer and water improvements, and community centers throughout the State.

A voluntary, nonprofit, nonpartisan association controlled and maintained by city and town governments, the Maryland Municipal League (MML) works to strengthen the role and capacity of municipal government through research, legislation, technical assistance, training and the dissemination of information for its members. Through its membership in the National League of Cities MML offers legislative representation in Washington, urban research programs, and a national municipal government information exchange. MML is the only statewide organization in Maryland composed solely of municipal officials and devoted to the promotion of all branches of municipal administration.

Oil Fund Raid

Yesterday Governor O’Malley convened a panel of experts to discuss the possibility of the Gulf of Mexico Oil spill reaching Maryland’s shores. In a statement O’Malley was quoted saying, “While science tells us that any impact along Maryland’s coast is highly unlikely, it’s our obligation to prepare for the worst.” If Governor O’Malley believes it is his obligation to be prepared for the worst, why did he raid Maryland’s Oil Disaster Fund to paper over his record budget deficit?

According to the Budget Reconciliation & Financing Act of 2010, Governor O’Malley sought to raid $2.2 million from Maryland’s Oil Disaster Clean Up Fund, nearly half the anticipated year-end fund balance of $4.8 million, and move the money to the State’s General Fund to help balance the budget. Ultimately, the Oil Disaster Clean Up Fund was raided by a million dollars or roughly 21 percent.

If reporting on this story please consider the following quote:

“There are many consequences to Governor O'Malley's failure to present a long-term solution to the record budget deficit he created,” said Audrey Scott, Chairman of the Maryland Republican Party. “Our State is now less prepared to respond to hazardous oil spills if one were to occur in Maryland. This Fund raid weakens Maryland’s environmental response and demonstrates that Governor O’Malley prefers to kick the budget can down the road, rather than show leadership in fixing Maryland’s record deficit.”

Ramblings Of A Retired mind

I was thinking about how a status symbol of today is those cell phones that everyone has clipped onto their belt or purse. I can't afford one. So, I'm wearing my garage door opener.

I also made a cover for my hearing aid and now I have what they call blue teeth, I think.

You know, I spent a fortune on deodorant before I realized that people didn't like me anyway.

I was thinking that women should put pictures of missing husbands on beer cans!

I was thinking about old age and decided that old age is 'when you still have something on the ball, but you are just too tired to bounce it.'

I thought about making a fitness movie for folks my age, and call it 'Pumping Rust'.

I've gotten that dreaded furniture disease. That's when your chest is falling into your drawers!

When people see a cat's litter box, they always say, 'Oh, have you got a cat?'

Just once I want to say, 'No, it's for company!'

Employment application blanks always ask who is to be notified in case of an emergency. I think you should write, 'A Good Doctor'!

I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older. Then, it dawned on me. They were cramming for their finals.

As for me, I'm just hoping God grades on the curve.

Homeland Security Slaps 6-Year-Old Girl On No Fly List

The Department of Homeland Security's anti-terrorist airplane protection services are so ironclad that even a sneaky 6-year-old Ohio girl couldn't make it through the dragnet. The feds were on to her and stuck her on the No Fly List. Possibly because she planned on asking for extra peanuts, getting up and going potty several times during a flight and maybe even kicking the seat in front of her.

A Women's Poem

He didn't like the casserole

And he didn't like my cake,

He said my biscuits were too hard

Not like his mother used to make.

I didn't perk the coffee right

He didn't like the stew,

I didn't mend his socks

The way his mother used to do.

I pondered for an answer

I was looking for a clue.

Then I turned around and

smacked the sh!t out of him...

Like his mother used to do.

ALLEGANY CO. WOMAN CHARGED WITH CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

(Frostburg, MD) – Members of the Maryland State Police Computer Crimes Unit arrested a Frostburg woman today in connection with the possession and distribution of child pornography.

The accused is identified as Toni M. Cozino, 24, of the 100 block of E. Mechanic Street, Frostburg, Md. She was charged today with one count of distributing child pornography and three counts of possessing child pornography. If convicted, Cozino could be sentenced to up to 16 years in prison and/or $28,000 in fines.

Earlier this month, a trooper assigned to the Maryland Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force began the investigation after identifying a computer on the Internet that was offering pornographic videos of children for others to download. Troopers were able to trace the computer back to Cozino.

Early this morning, investigators served a search warrant at Cozino’s Frostburg residence. The search yielded computers and multiple data storage devices. A preliminary analysis of the seized computers led to the discovery of child pornography. A complete forensic examination of the computers will be conducted which could lead to additional charges.

Cozino was arrested and taken before a court commissioner for a bond hearing. She was ordered to be held on a $25,000 bond and was taken to the Allegany County Detention Center.

The Maryland Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force is comprised of police agencies from around the state. Its primary mission is to protect children from computer-facilitated sexual exploitation. The Task Force works cooperatively with law enforcement agencies and prosecutors to provide resources to combat these crimes. Additionally, the Task Force provides community awareness campaigns helping to prevent the spread of these crimes through education.
